Ticcy, this is way OT, but my kitten just attacked my computer screen after watching your avatar for several seconds.
It was LOLZ-worthy.
My kitten is stupid.
Topic? Well, I'll try, but Al looks very confused that his toy is disappeared.
I think who tops is all about the situation. Wilson strikes me as a top. He's more giving in daily life, but that doesn't transfer into sex. Actually, that's why I think Wilson would want as much control in bed as he could possibly get.

I just don't really see why any of these brilliant writers would want to hear my comments ... Would you rather have someone comment, even if it isn't much more than, "I really enjoyed this, thank you" or would you rather receive detailed analysis and concrit?
Your comments are much more welcome and desired than you might imagine, no matter how short.
There's just nothing like putting a lot of thought and effort into a story, posting it up and hearing the crickets chirp.
I've talked to some really fantastic writers and I've learned that this feeling never changes; they really do just want to know someone's paying attention. In-depth stuff is great, but writers know that not everyone is that good with words, and they appreciate hearing from you regardless.

I think people believe "penis" can't be a sexy word, but I think if you're relying on saying "cock" and "fuck" a lot to make your sex scenes work, then something's gone wrong somewhere. Sometimes, it's the word that's needed.
I agree! I know some people think penis is too 'clinical' a word to use - much the same with vagina. I can understand that. I guess it's just personal preference. I also think less is usually more, though. =S
Speaking of which, I don't always get why some people explain ejaculation in explicit detail. We all know what a penis does during orgasm, right? (You'd hope so, if people are reading fics with sex in it!) Or maybe some people just find things akin to money shots, etc, hot.

For me, because that's why I post fic - to entertain other people, and it makes me very happy to know that was achieved.
Don't get me wrong, I loooove detailed analysis and concrit, but that's icing on the cake. A simple "That was great" is very much something I appreciate if you feel it's deserved.

Well here I was trying to come up with a succinct way of putting down how I felt, and Dee Laundry came along and did it uch better than I could ever hope to. So ... what she said.
Concrit would be great, but just a "thanks, I enjoyed it" is also appreciated, because at least I know someone read and liked what I did.

I've only posted 5 fics, but I've loved every comment I've ever gotten including two that hated it and called me a Cameron!hater. They had an opinion and expressed it in a reasonably respectful manner. That is all I can ask for and I thanked them for telling me about it. Comments are so motivating and so wonderful.

LOL on calling myself "brilliant" -- Sorry, should've edited the quote.

Speaking for myself, feedback is always welcome, no matter what the length. I'm always grateful that someone has taken the time to drop a note, especially since I'm so terrible at commenting myself (I made it my New Year's resolution to comment more, but that's been about as successful as last year's pledge to abandon all illusions).
I'd also like to believe that I'm open to any and all criticism - not only will it not be as harsh as what I'm already telling myself, but I'll never learn if I'm not corrected (whether I'll learn then is a different matter, but at least I'll try). I even have a list of personal pitfalls that I've posted next to my computer, most of which have been identified by readers. I have to admit I am more nervous about replying to criticism - not because I don't want it, but because I worry about sounding ungracious or unaccepting of the criticism.
Just out of curiosity, do others notice a difference between the number of comments they get at the pit vs. LJ? In either direction? A couple of people commented on the last story I posted at ff.net that they didn't understand why it didn't have more reviews, which got me thinking (paranoid) about it. I normally post at LJ a day before I get around to posting at ff.net, so I just assume that the people who were going to comment already saw the story elsewhere. Has that been other people's experience? Or do you think there are different readership profiles at the various posting places?
TrooperCam- 08-20-2007
I find I get a lot more replies from ff than LJ. A lot has to do with I have more of a readership from FF and most of the people who are dedicated LJ readers(I think) already havbe read the story before.
I try and leave feedback when I read something. I try not to leave negative feedback, unless it is something that is so incredibly jarring that it makes me want to stop reading. A lot of time if I have something negative to say I will send a PM to the person. That way they know I am reading, but it doesn't embarass them if there is a glaring error or something just crazy about a fic.

It's practically impossible for me to comment crit, cuz I feel so madly in love with the fics I'm usually reading that I just want to kiss every word (and often stalk the writer and worship her or him - be very afraid  ), and when you're in love you cant crit for shit.
If the story is all OOC I'm running for my life, if only bits of it is OOC I'm too horrified to point it out and make them not want to write again, and I'm so grateful they write in the first place (the fics make me really, really happy). So it's catch 22.
I know a lot of the writers want the crit, but I really do feel unworthy (don't mock :P) to give it, unless being asked directly and privately.
lovelythings- 08-20-2007
Every other sentence I find myself wondering "Is this a cliche? Is this prose too purple? If this is a badfic will anyone love me enough to tell me?"
Don't worry, Vita - I'd tell you.
zulu, I love that we've had lengthy discussions on cock vs. dick. But I have to say that I think word choice can be more important in the middle of a hot and heavy smut scene than in other, more day-to-day scenes. I've had an awkward sentence take me right out of the mood more than once. Sometimes when I was writing them.
I'm really glad this thread exists! It's great talking about all of this.

Nope, you're right on target!
Even reading all your responses, and knowing that I should, and its ok, still when going to read afterwards I have trouble clicking that comment button! I must have a brain glitch or something. Can't I just issue a blanket "I love you, man!" and be done with it?
Nah, guess not. Somebody out there might really suck.

"I love you, man!" is fabulous, but line-edits and plot crit are always appreciated too! I love it when someone actually cares enough to point out something that's wrong. That's a great reader.
The other day I had about ten comments on some short pieces and they all said "That was good" or "That was cute". It's always nice when a reader bothers to let you know they've been reading, but my ideal commenter puts a little more in, and I try to as well.
It's always weird when someone recs something without having commented on it. To me, anyway.
