That's true enough for good AND for bad fic. Someone might get recced simply because they're known and/or prolific, not necessarily because they're good.
When I first jumped into the fandom, I didn't depend much on rec lists, mostly for that reason. I ended up finding and reading a certain author's body of work, then checked out their memories, and then someone else's memories, and it snowballed from there. I check out the recs now, but I find that, yes, some badfic squeezes its way onto the lists, and some good ones never appear.
Oh, and since someone brought it up, I just want to vent that summaries will be the death of me! Sometimes I think they're harder to come up with than the actual text of the story. Sheesh.
I must chime in with my admiration for your icon, Moony. Every time I see it, I giggle like a kid who's sniffed far too many Wite-Out bottles.

Oh Jeebus, summaries could be a thread untoo themselves. Summaries are supossed to tease a story, make you want to click on it not give the whole damn thing away. I feel about summaries the way I do about leads in news stories. If you tell me all in the lead, why am I going to waste my time watching your story.
JenButterfly- 08-17-2007
Not necessarily. I've seen plenty of badfic recced at places you wouldn't expect badfic to be recced.
And when I say badfic, I don't mean stuff that doesn't appeal to me. I mean, I don't like deathfic or violence or any of that kind of thing, but you would never hear me say that Rubberbutton or Nightdog write badfic. That's just crazy talk. When I say badfic I mean the crap someone's churned out that they obviously didn't bother to A) spellcheck, B) punctuate or C) watch an episode of House EVER. Eyeball-sporkin' time.
True enough, it's just that I've known some people (being on the receiving end or having seen it done) where people will flame and call a story bad!fic because they don't like the type of story.
DIY Sheep- 08-17-2007
Yes, some people will dish a story simply because they don't like the pairing or the genre. I think that's very limited.
It's fiction!
That's the wonderful thing about it. You can kill House off in one story and make him wear a tutu in another.
And also it's a bit like saying I like tacos. I will eat tacos every day and missing out on the joys of hamburgers.
I'm a bit like that with Japanese food. I have my set favourites, but every so often I forgo the sushimi and try the weird looking thing - and sometimes I am pleasantly surprised.
I think that's a bit the same with ff. Everyone has different tastes, but sometimes you are just sitting there, going I had no idea this existed.
JenButterfly- 08-17-2007
*snickers* You mentioning House in a tutu reminds me of the time I made Wilson hump everything, Foreman fight a bunch of Cardasians, and Chase dress up as a Venezuelan prostitute.
But yes, people who flame just because they don't like a pairing/genre/ect. are just closed minded individuals.
Oh, and I'm an Intern now!! WHOOOOOOOOO

Does *anyone* else have this problem, that they are paranoid that everyone's laughing at them when they see crits like this?
I think it’s important to use what you can get from this thread, and throw the rest away and NOT let it freak you out. Even those of us who delight in giggling at fanfic clichés have sporkable things in our own fics; i.e. Oh, god, here comes Aenisses Thai and another one of her House-Chase father/son hurt/comfort fics again! Really, is there anything in House/Wilson that hasn’t been seen before; if not in House fic, then in Kirk/Spock or some other ancient fandom? ^^
We may be sporking fanon clichés, but even if your fic contains some of those elements, it doesn’t automatically qualify as “badfic.” Like I said before, we all use clichés. The worst use of clichés is when a writer attempts NOTHING original and just recycles the tired fanon ideas she/he has seen in some other fic. That’s plain lazy writing, which is bad in any form, including the so-called “original fic.” (Eragon, anyone?)
So it doesn’t matter if you have Wilson make macadamia nut pancakes, or House call Chase a wombat (only once in a fic, though, please! ), or someone get slammed up against a door and kissed hard—the question is, what original insight did you bring as a writer into depicting the character interactions? If you put plenty of effort and thought into your creation, then it’s unlikely that you have to worry about your fic being sporked as badfic.
However, if you still have doubts, take this thread as a cheap, easy creative writing lesson, and see if your next fic can have Wilson doing something other than making pancakes, or a sex scene that doesn’t involve tidal waves of semen, or House abusing his team using words that haven’t been used in a thousand other fanfics before. Yeah, it’s hard work to be original—what hobby isn’t?

I think that's really good advice and it's true. Are there any original ideas left? There are different writers' takes on the same ideas.
Also, if you're shy about being a writer and active in the fandom, you can always use one name to write and another name to post. Or 5 different names depending on what board you're on. LOL (I wouldn't know anything about that! ;) )
Even bad!fic can serve it's purpose of entertaining. I enjoy fan fiction enough that I'll give just about any fic that shows up under the "Chase" search a try. I may not finish it, but I'll give it a chance. I've even stuck with some bad fics (which I won't name) and tried to find something positive to comment on because I think the author has some potential--even if it's something as simple as "Oh no, you've given us a cliffhanger!" which implies anticipation of the next chapter. It may not even be a compliment per say, but I think an author appreciates a non-negative reaction. Every writer starts somewhere and most people can improve with time and practice.

Which would be exactly what I do, heh. On LJ, the only place my writing is, I'm l57371.

I'm not a writer so my humble opinion doesn't count but I find this whole thread extremely fascinating. I'm spending a whole lot of time lurking here. Also just want to generally say thanks to all of the writer people. I get a lot of pleasure from your stories.

And if someone can explain to my why my last 2 posts got squished off to the side I won't do it again.

So very very true. I try to leave my crap up on my site just as a reminder that I make falls as well. Everybody has their screw up fic, the trick is to move on and learn from it.

Nevermind. Clever people fixed their own things.

Because CL's post had an extra quote tag in it, orbs. No worry, your friendly neighbourhood mod took care of it ;D
