Um, hi, just popped in here for a quick question. I just started watching Doctor Who and I absolutely love it. I've only see the episodes of the current series and I was wondering: Should I watch from the reboot and then when I'm done start from the way beginning or should I start from the first episode and go from there?

I'm stuck on the BBC America schedule so I've only just gotten to the weeping angels two parter (which is brilliant and River's much less annoying this time around) but I liked Rory in The Eleventh Hour, so I can't wait until he comes back.

You can definitely begin with just the reboot. The nice thing about Dr. Who is that it frequently reinvents itself, so there are multiple opportunities to get into it.
You can easily start with the 11th Doctor -- our current one -- then go back and explore previous iterations of the Doctor. The existing run begins with the Ninth Doctor -- Christopher Eccleston -- who did only one season, then it moved on to David Tennant.
The AV Club recently did a great Primer on Doctor Who that fills in a lot of background quickly on the show and its various Doctors that will bring you up to speed as well.

LMC, we have a US pace Doctor Who thread for discussion - there are a few people here who are watching on BBC America so you won't be spoiled if you are in that thread. Namaste would probably like some company over there too! :-)

Thanks Namaste for the answer and the link. Both were really helpful!

I like Rory and all, but is he going to be around for every episode this season?
ETA: Just looked on IMDB and answered my own question. SPOILER Looks like he's in 2 more episodes in a row and then in the finale END SPOILER

Does anyone else notice that Elizabeth I was mentioned again? Wouldn't this be about the third time (although I may be imagining a mention in Victory of the Daleks)? I realize it was funny when the Doctor revealed what he'd done to her - for the most part - in The End of Time, but it's rare that a joke is driven home like that. I wonder if it means something...

Hmmm, good point. I wonder if its something coming up.

While I liked this episode and thought it had some funny lines, I did have some problems. The whole choice thing was bizarre. The Dreamlord kept insinuating that Amy loved the Doctor and even that she should chose him, but then made it sound like the Doctor doesn't trust her at all and would just abandon her. Also, the Dreamlord's comments about Amy's feelings for the Doctor felt creepily...for lack of a better word, egotistical ("some of your dreams made me blush" or something like that especially skeeved me out). The whole name thing didn't make sense, from what (little) I've seen it doesn't seem like something the Doctor would want to bring up. Finally, the Dreamlord pointing out Amy's abandonment issues. The Doctor never struck me as being that intuitive to those things, as realizing how bad they were.
Sorry for the ramble-y post, I'm just very confused

Well, The Dream Lord was supposed to be all the bad stuff in the Doctor - his dark side. I think he may be aware of all those things, but pushes them all down deep (as many people do). I mean, everyone has uncharitable unfair feelings somewhere down there we just don't articulate them. Why would the Doctor be any different? I think he can guess that Amy's dreams about him would have a carnal edge after she climbed him like a tree last episode. ;-)
ETA: Interesting article on The Time of Angels on io9. They brought up so many things that I missed!

ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOORY!!!!!!!
Spoiler/I think he's coming back though, what with the IMDb credits and the "time can be rewritten"/Spoiler
How could Amy be completely unaffected by Rory not existing? I'm not talking about her being sad, but the people we come into contact with (especially people we are going to get married to) influence us. There's no way she'd be the same exact person.
Also, I didn't like the Doctor hating on Ambrose. She had just lost her son and husband and her father was infected by some unknown venom. She didn't mean to kill Alaya (taser NOT gun) and Alaya seemed to be pretty intent on her own death anyway.
fffaw- 05-29-2010
I was so unhappy at that development and I was just bitching a couple of weeks ago about him being around all the time. But I didn't want it to go down that way. WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I kinda thought Ambrose deserved everything she got. Neither she or Alaya were particularly likeable. I guess that was on purpose - they weren't the best of their species. Alaya was a bloodthirsty as her sister.

Yeah, I didnt realize how much I liked him but I really, really did. He grew on me and now... *sniff* Stupid show. I did like the regal Silurian leader and the scientist. Weird how harsh the women were in this one.
fffaw- 05-30-2010
Yeah, good point, Boffle - the women were super aggressive and angry. The men were the ones willing to be the peacemakers. Interesting.
