Medical specialties are either "medical" or "surgical." It just occurred to me that almost all the specialties on House are medical.
Medical
Endocrinology
Epidemiology
Genetics
Immunology
Infectious Disease
Intensive Care
Internal Medicine
Interventional Radiology
Nephrology
Neurology
Surgical
Plastic Surgery
Could go either way depending on the subspecialty
Oncology (also Oncolgy)
Rehabilitation/Sports Medicine
I have no idea what it means. But it's interesting.
Edited to include Silja's corrections. And I agree about Chase -- his specialties are ICUs and diagnostics. I understand why he's not in the diagnostics department but I'm pretty sure PPTH has ICUs.

Intensive care (or critical care depending on who you ask) and interventional radiology are both medical specialities. Intensivists start out with internal medicine but I've heard of anaesthetists going that way as well. Sports medicine can be approached via orthopaedics or internal medicine so that can be either surgical or medical.
ETA: I forgot to use this moment to rant: Chase is not surgeon and there is no bloody way that he could have a) found time to do a second specialisation and b) been hired as a surgeon in RL. Bad, bad writers!

I am so grateful for your support in my lonely crush on Scooter! You guys are great, sob!
I don't think we know enough about the candidates yet to tell how their characters, styles, and personal histories will resonate with House's. We don't know how what they bring to the unit will give us new insights into House, which is indeed their only function.
For example, we don't know which of the chosen ones will be able to stand up to House, challenging his medical theories or his bizarre social behaviors. Obviously, since they are still contending for the job, no one is ready to be too strong against House yet, although Thirteen has shown some signs of being able to call him on his BS ocassionally.
Here is my wild speculation on how the characters of the newbies could play out:
-- Kal Penn's Kutner has been identified by House as a foster child. Could his insecurities arising from constantly shuttling between families mirror House's own unstable childhood and trust issues? Quirky, gung-ho, excitable, self-centered are adjectives which leap to mind for Kutner and certainly they apply to House's childlike aspects as well.
-- When she drops the enigmatic mask, Thirteen strikes me as essentially sad. She seeems lonely and rootless , which could certainly resonate with lots in House's personality and past. As long as they leave off the bogus "sexual tension with House" rigamarole, I can see strong possibilities in this character.
-- Taub is the career-shifter whose ambition and imagination has been hinted at, as has his ability to read into and communicate with patients in distress (the secretive astronaut case highlighted all of these qualities). Will his ambition and his empathethic nature place him at odds with House?
-- Cole could provide the ethical solidity, moral resolve, inquiring mind, and external ties to family and community to offer strong insights into House in all of these important areas.
-- Amber the Over-Reaching would match House in scenery-chewing excess and boldness, and she is probably better than he is at bare-knuckles politicking. She has persistence, rudeness, audacity, and self-regard to the Nth power. Since all of these are traits prominent in House, she would be either at odds with him or in league with him at every turn.
-- Scooter's wise, wry and almost telepathic interaction with House would have provided the strong but supportive father-figure House has lacked. We would have learned lots more about House in this way, if only they had let Henry stay on the team, sob!
Of course what we have seen so far of these characters is only their surface presentations. David Shore is sure to offer many twists and darker layers to contradict the rather simple pictures we have formed so far. After all, our early impressions of Chase (sycophant), Foreman (arrogant), and Cameron (guileless) were systematically undercut and overturned by the end of season three.

I enjoyed watching 6/9 playing with his stethoscope during the episode. You'll notice his twisting it, spinning it, etc.

Word. I acutally like her a lot. I didn't think she came off as cold or nonchalant about killing a patient, just a little closed off (I have the problem of coming off completely aweful in situations where I'm uncomfortable, so I empathize) and as a frequent watcher of Soap Net (my super sekrit guilty pleasure) I already adore Olivia Wilde from the OC. That being said, if they try and make her House's new WUN TROO LUVE with OH EM GEE ROMANTIC TENSION, I will spend the remainder of her time on the show waiting for her to get hit by a bus. I mean really. Enough already.

I thought it was kinda cute when Cole and 13 did the little "cheers!" thing with their flowers. :)

So did I. That is the kind of business good actors do to give a backstory, even if untold forever, to their characters which gives them depth.
When I saw that, I liked 13 and Cole a lot more because it gave me something to relate to.
In the same vein, ROF giving Taub the finger was priceless for the same reason.

If House had been trapped in an office or administrative career, he probably would've done exactly what Henry did: sit in on classes, master the material, then try to get out by posing as a doctor.
From the House/Scooter/Wilson thread
This part of Scooter's backstory kind of grates me. If he sat in every class offered three times and learned all the material wouldn't someone somewhere along the line take notice of this person who was in all the classes and oh I don't know help him find a way to go to medical school legimately?

Dobson worked at Columbia med school for 30 years. He didn't necessarily attend the same class back-to-back-to-back.. He may have audited the same class taught by multiple profs, just to get their different takes on things. (which would also give him greater access to a wider variety of information since he probably had a chance to sit in on the best teachers over three decades, compared to young doctors who had limited access to a limited number of doctors).
And if he was asked why he was auditing so many classes he could say that he was trying to get a sense of the classroom atmosphere to help him sort out the candidates for each class in the admissions office.

I wonder why he didn't become a doctor, though. Couldn't afford the tuition fees? Didn't think that at his age he could handle the physical demands of residency?

I just assumed that he had a family to support and couldn't afford to give up his administrative job while the kids were at home. He's old enough that, perhaps, his kids are out on their own, his wife possibly passed away, and he finally could take a big leap for himself. That was the story I made up.
PS I. too, love Dobson and he must be brought back!

ITA, houserocket. I just figured Scooter had a family to support, and that was why he didn't just jump in, take the MCATs, and try to go to med school for real. Because it seems clear that he would have made it through with flying colors, had he been able to attend. The House thing might have been something he's trying out in his retirement.

Since specialties clearly no longer matter on this show, Cuddy can hire him as her assistant. Or he can work for Wilson in Oncology.

Oh no, more people on the Oncology unit? How are they going to deal with that, since Wilson seems to be the only doctor there. Seriously though, I love it. Anything to keep Scooter on the show. He's the only one of the newbies I really loved.

I can buy this except my 43 year old brother in law is in his second year of Pathology residency and yes he had a wife and two small children to support when it started. It can be done and if Scooter was sitting in all those classes then it should have appeared to someone that he had the desire if not the means.
