Maybe a question to add to that is, do they give specific seat assignments, or do they just assign tables and let the guests sit where ever they want? So did Hugh pick where he was sitting I guess is the question :) Of course, I didn't work this show, but given the high-profile nature of the show, I would guess that they assigned seats at each table. (They wouldn't want Hugh back in the corner where the camera would have trouble getting to him.)

I figured Hugh just picked where he wanted to sit, but no, the GG people assigned his back to the stage. I know it was for camera stuff, but I can't imagine that was comfortable for Hugh

I know it was for camera stuff, but I can't imagine that was comfortable for Hugh I'm sure they didn't intend for his back to be toward the camera/stage -- they probably figured he'd do what people at other tables do and just turn his chair around (which would put his back to the table). Having those round table makes it awkward no matter what -- if you're facing the stage/camera, you're behind the table and your view is probably obscured by the person on the opposite side of the table.
