Namaste- 02-19-2008

Yep, it's the Colin Firth version. I just don't get it.

misere- 02-19-2008

Now I'm enjoying it, but *whispers* I still don't find Darcy all that hot. I don't think Colin Firth is hot either. Actually, even though the miniseries is far more faithful to the novel than the movie, I like Matthew Macfadyen's performance as Darcy better, and I find him more physically appealing despite the fact that his physical imperfections are more obvious than those of most other actors.

deeol- 02-19-2008

I have to admit, P&P is the only thing I've ever found Colin Firth even remotely hot in. I think for me it was far more the character than the actor, but then I'm a massive Jane Austen geek -- massive enough that I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying that version of P&P when it came out. I'm much more likely to find television or film adaptations of Jane Austen to be completely eye-roll-worthy. Not naming any names, of course... but there's enough of them out there.

I don't think Colin Firth is hot either. I'm much more likely to find television or film adaptations of Jane Austen to be completely eye-roll-worthy. I claim no great experience of these here, but I did roll my eyes at this one adaption of 'Jane Eyre' where this insanely hot guy was playing Mr. Rochester.

I have to admit, P&P is the only thing I've ever found Colin Firth even remotely hot in. I saw him on stage in London in 83? in Another Country as Guy Bennett when he took over from Rupert Everett (saw him too the year before, with Branaugh playing Tommy Judd). Believe me, he was hot (actually they all were  ) I do have a fondness for the Firth P&P, partly because I also like Ehle's Elizabeth & think they were well matched.

deeol- 02-20-2008

They were, I agree. They were... um... well matched in real life for a little while too, if I remember right.

Do I need to turn in my chick license? No Namaste! Drive on, woman! But look at the avalanche of Colin is Cold you've unleashed! LOL!! I can certainly see Firth's appeal, and he does a fine job of conveying Darcy's confusion, love, and wounded pride. But he just doesn't make it on my hotometer, either. BTW, Sunday's installment conflicts with the Oscars, and the repeat in on at 12:30am on Feb 28th (a least in my area). So prepare accordingly. Like deeol, my eyes want to leave their sockets at most of these adaptations. I always find at least one point where I'm sputtering "But-but, the book!" This series was very well-done, though, IMO. And I do agree that Ehle and Firth were well matched. Taiga, you had me hysterically ROTFL at your "insanely hot" Rochester!!! Was it the one with Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens? If so, I totally agree! When Rochester asks Jane if she finds him handsome, and she bluntly tells him no - well, I just said to myself "Oh Jane dear, you may as well complete the plain with some new spectacles, because you are blind!". But the adaptation that has, for some reason, won my affection is Wives And Daughters. What a great cast - I think Michael Gambon won a Bafta for his Squire Hamley (outstanding - such a combination of gruff and heartbroken!), and there was Penelope Wilton, Francesca Annis, and Justine Waddell was a fine Molly Gibson, IMO. Anthony Howell was, hm, warm, in that. But as his supposedly drop-dead handsome brother Osborne, Tom Hollander was, well, something of a dog. Rather the opposite of the Jane Eyre experience. LOL! But now, I guess I'll have to surrender my chick license. You guys will think I'm cracked, but I just love the Scottish actor, Bill Paterson, who played Molly's father, Dr. Gibson. (He also did a fascinating para-psychological series, Sea Of Souls.) He's a wee, meaty thing, but he has that enchanting accent, and the most wonderful, warm voice. Now he could speak me into crashing the car, anyway.

They were - and split up not long after P&P filmed, with some interesting interviews about how easy it is to confuse RL with the characters they were playing. Sunday's installment conflicts with the Oscars, More importantly, conflicts with Oscar parties!

Taiga- 02-20-2008

Nope warycary, it was Timothy Dalton playing Rochester. James Bond himself!

Nope warycary, it was Timothy Dalton playing Rochester. James Bond himself! Now, you see, there's another actor whose attraction is perfectly obvious to me in an objective way, but who generates no heat for me. For me, Bond will always be Connery. Even as a grandpa, there is some warmth left in the old chap. Now David Duchovny, especially in his X-Files days - much physical and intellectual thermal energy there, boy. Meow. Though both Dalton and Firth get points for being my "type" - tall, lanky, brunette ectomorphs, somehow, meh. Not feelin' it dog, not feelin' it.

Um, excuse me. Colin Firth. White shirt. Pond. Verrry hot. Plus those smoldering gazes...yowza!!! Ehle's Lizzy was vivacious and just right as well. Clearly I'm a big fan of that P&P and of Austen as well. Firth usually does something for me, even in the BJ movies because he's so good at the tongue in cheek, but here, those outdoor scenes show the character as such a manly type and then he's so hot within his proud demeanor... Lovely.

And I grant you, a tall man in a crisp white shirt, on an exquisite outdoor set, suffering behind smoldering Jane Austin-written gazes is knee-weakening indeed. But while I can understand Lizzy's attraction, and it plays a vital part of my enjoyment of the whole series... Firth may not put his slippers under my bed.

Unless of course, a certain tall, blue-eyed Brit is there first...boy I do need that hose tonight ;-)

I wouldn't turn the hose on you for all the world now - I'm just going to let you rant on about the woolly socks. God, did that make me laugh. Jesu Cristo, what did you have for dinner?!
