Oh, wow. I had no idea he created "Popular". I watched it religiously, but never paid attention to who created it, I guess. Ryan Murphy, to me, is the guy who created "Nip/Tuck" partly because FOX keeps telling me that and partly because I don't watch it, but I've always found him amusing. Kind of like how I don't watch "Lost", but I'm sort of in love with Damon Lindelof.
This is probably old news to everyone, but it is new to me since I rarely watch SNL.
WILL FERRELL SANG GOODNIGHT SAIGON (with a bunch of other awesome folks)!!!
I just saw the clip today and being a no-longer-closeted Billy Joel fan, I nearly died.
That bit was pretty genius. It really didn't even need the gag about how the dude does this to get out of paying the check because even without the setup and punchline it would have been so absurdly funny to see him randomly singing that song, being joined at various points by everybody under the sun. I loved it.
I fully admit to loving Billy Joel pretty unconditionally, but I've never liked that song. There's nothing especially *wrong* with it, I've just never had much patience when it comes to Joel's guilt over the things he didn't do in his life. That said (and I know it's heading off topic, but I don't know how to bring it back just yet) I sort of fell in love with "Movin' Out" and the incorporation of that song made me cry.
Oh, hey...I can bring it back! I didn't know that anyone had managed to get that clip online, so I googled and it's at Videogum. So anyone who didn't see it (or didn't see the other genius bits in that episode), go here:

Billy Joel appreciation thread! Goodnight Saigon isn't one of my faves, it was always too theatrical for my tastes. The Joel is pretty damn theatrical all the time, so too theatrical is saying something.
Thank you for expressing some Movin' Out love. I wish I could've seen it more than once, it was so good and yeah, I cried. My only issue was that Brenda (of Brenda and Eddie) was always a brunette in my mind.
And to swerve back on topic: Remember when Tom Hanks (who RULED Celebrity Jeopardy, amirite?) was on Bosom Buddies and the theme song was "My Life"?
All roads lead to the Joel.
Keep the faith.

Despite being a Billy Joel fan, I had never actually heard that song until last year. Most of my Billy Joel love comes from my mom who played his records constantly when I was growing up. She never liked that song, I never heard it. I didn't really like it when I find heard much for the reasons that you stated (I never liked Downeaster Alexa or Allentown either). But I also thought that it sounded a bit too Wagnerian for my tastes.
I kind of fond of it now because it is so OTT. It's that kind of song I'd love to belt out with riding in the car, or after having a few beers with friends.
Topic? The Jeopardy skit almost made me love Tom Hanks again.
Wandering over to "music."
The husband showed his friends the most recent Celebrity Jeopardy and the Goodnight Saigon skits and neither knew the song. It's sad. I have a feeling that Tom Hanks vs. Dry Cleaning Bag is going to be a classic.
I don't know what's going on over at SNL. They didn't have a great season, hell, it probably wasn't even good, but that's all forgotten and forgiven because of the last two episodes of the season. I wonder what is is about Timberlake and Ferrell that made them come up with so much great material.
Dwayne Johnson was pretty great. I think he was the biggest surprise of the year. But yeah, the rest of the season was pretty lackluster. Except for the last two episodes.
David Hyde Pierce and his partner were among those couples
to get married in California during the brief period when gay marriage was allowed. Nice for him.
There are rumors that Craig Ferguson might be hosing the Emmy's this year(is it a CBS year?).
I love his rant about last year's Emmy's.
And while I'm on the subject of Craig, I love, love, love the
Istanbul song he did last week.
Craig hosting the Emmys would be great. I'd watch for that.
I started re-watching How I Met Your Mother. Ted is an ass. He'd be unbearable to be around. I watched 4 episodes and wanted to slap him. What woman would marry that jerk? Barney and Marshall and Lilly, however are Legen---wait for it--dary!
Most of you won't even know who she was but
Gale Storm died. I have clear memories of My Little Margie although it must have been reruns by the time I saw them.
And the hits just keep on coming -- for those of us old enough to remember. The impressionist
Fred Travelena has died. I remember a time in the 70s when it seemed like he showed up on every TV show.
I was surprised by Fred Travelena - he was *everywhere* in the 70s.
I remember Gale Storm too - but more from my older family members talking about My Little Margie.
