He was amazing, as always. Didn't disappoint. "I choose bimbos"

Boo! I missed HIMYM because I was cleaning the living room and couldn't have the TV plugged in because it's a long story.

So did Craig - who is one of my favorite hosts because he is the only one who actually drops the mask and truly talks from his heart (on occasion - for example, on the death of his father which was staggeringly heartbreaking and life affirming). He rarely does it, but when he does, it's real. I enjoy that his monologue is in his head each night and he just does most of it off the cuff. There are a few words/bullet points on the cue cards, but for the most part he's riffing and I enjoy that immensely. If you wanna go drool over Craig I'll be more than happy to meet you in the comedy thread. Here I am! I love Craig! He is so open. Of course, I don't always love his opinions, but I love that they are his opinions, not a politically correct, network approved version. Did you see his tribure to his dad?

...I suspect that with the Letterman/McCain controversy last night even their late night shows will see an increase. I call shennanigans. If you haven't seen Dave's rant

amysusanne- 09-25-2008

I wish I'd seen the whole show. Gotta say, I've heard a lot of "nobody came down on Obama for dissing SNL" arguments (yes they did, Obama wasn't the primary guest and he didn't cancel at the last minute) and a lot of "Letterman's a commie liberal" arguments (which don't hold water given that he swings both ways) and a lot of just randomly idiotic internet spewing (the usual) and...I'm still with Dave on this one. The fact that angry Dave is entertaining is just a bonus. I wish there had been another guest on there last night that interested me because I might have Tivo'd it. As it is, all the clips online are good enough. I did record it tonight. I find it ironic (and potentially very entertaining) that Paris Hilton is the guest tonight given that Dave similarly ripped into her for cancelling on his show at the last minute awhile back. Afaik, Paris didn't lie to him, though, and we can safely assume that she wasn't a couple of blocks away being interviewed by Katie Couric instead of fullfilling her committments. Ultimately, it's not the end of the world, but I am completely with Dave as far as understanding why he's so pissed off. The funny thing to me is that the truth would have sufficed. I'm gonna guess that Dave would have understood and wouldn't have made a stink about it if he hadn't been completely blindsided by it all. I love Craig! He is so open. Of course, I don't always love his opinions, but I love that they are his opinions, not a politically correct, network approved version. Exactly. He's not pandering to anyone. If he's not genuinely having a good time doing that show then he's a far better actor than I ever gave him credit for. I wish I had the time or the DVR space to record and watch him every night, but picking the show up about once a week or so is still good enough for my fix. Did you see his tribure to his dad? Yes. And it was totally by accident. This is so stupid of me to remember (and you actually might remember it too since I think it happened to a lot of people over at the other place), but the only reason I got to see it was because Emma Thompson was the scheduled guest that night and I'd already set the DVR to record it. It was such a fantastic show. Funny and sad and pretty interesting on top of it all.

I'm gonna guess that Dave would have understood and wouldn't have made a stink about it if he hadn't been completely blindsided by it all. Agree. It was the needless lying and political posturing that had Dave riled up. My favorite part was when Keith Olbermann, for no known reason, came wandering over. (I didn't see the full show, either, just the online clips.) He appeared more than happy to stoke Dave's anger. :-)

amysusanne- 09-25-2008

I almost wonder if half of the "LIBERALS SUCK!!!" screaming on the internets isn't due to nothing more than Olberman's presence. {g} From what I've pieced together, Olbermann is their "OMG, we have to fill time!!!" go to guest. Dave thanked him for coming in at the last minute and made a comment about that having happened before. I like to imagine that Olbermann just hangs out in the neighborhood every afternoon hoping that Dave is going to call him and invite him over. Craig evidently commented with faux anger at the beginning of TLLS that Olbermann had was supposed to be on his show but cancelled. I love that the jokes just carry right on over from show to show.

I missed Craig's show last night, unfortunately. The most hilarious thing about Dave's rant is that it was on youtube hours before it even aired on the east coast. I love that Colbert called for Jon Stewart to suspend their shows together. And then was conveniently "re-spensioned."

amysusanne- 09-26-2008

Totally at random, I got Craig's show. Sort of. I don't remember why I would have set the DVR for it, but I'm assuming that some guest was listed that wound up not being there. At any rate, Letterman ran late because of Bush so I got the last part of him too. None of the good stuff, unfortunately, but the tone was interesting. I'm sure someone, somewhere, has put the entire thing online and maybe searching it out will be the project today. I did go ahead and set last night's Letterman to see what went down, but apparently I'm more interested in sitting here than going into the living room and watching it.

It was priceless the moment Olbermann came on the air. But, he's a fixture on our television, so that's why. But, if I go further into it, you all will see what a fangirl I can be for that man. I love that Colbert called for Jon Stewart to suspend their shows together. And then was conveniently "re-spensioned." And it seems that we owe a lot of gratitude to Stewart in general for, in my opinion, being able to open up serious politics to talented comics. Prior to The Daily Show (TDS), it seemed that comedian's takes on politics didn't matter - they were just entertainers. Now, they rank close to being level with the news analysts trying for their five minutes with Wolf Blitzer. I guess what I'm trying to say through a clouded mind right now is this - prior to TDS Dave would have just been brushed off, labeled as a comedian, and that would be it. But now with these shows being such a good venue, yes it's not as serious as Katie Couric, but with them being such a good venue, more people are willing to watch them and sit and listen to what their guests have to say.

amysusanne- 09-26-2008

I love Olbermann, so fangirl away. "Sportscenter" got me through many a late night in college and I'm not even a sports fan. I think it's hilarious that he's such a cable superstar again. I've always loved how polarizing he is and how he's blindly hated by so many. It always cracks me up when someone talks shit about him because...do they think he's not going to talk about it on the show? Granted, there are some who want that, but others? It's just insane. I love it. As for TDS...I don't know. I agree that TDS has played a major role in the way that younger people get their news and they've had a great influence, but I don't think that TDS paved the way. The way was already paved with the existing shows (they had politicians on) and shows like "Politically Incorrect" and those great election year shows that Maher and Franken and various others did for Comedy Central back in the early nineties. I think it all moves in cycles because there have been plenty of points in time where comedians bridged the gap between politics and entertainment. SNL, George Carlin, Franken and Davis, The Smothers Brothers...*especially* The Smothers Brothers. "Laugh In". That's not to diminish what TDS does because they're geniuses to have built this current show up from the Kilborn template that went lighter on the politics. Though as much as TDS has evolved and as awesome as they are these days, I still think the two most genius things ever on the show were both in 2000: Carell on McCain's bus and the election night special.

Arguably, the Daily Show is far more serious than Katie Couric. Other than that, I agree with everything amysusanne said. What a surprise. ;-)

arizonamyrie- 09-26-2008

Guh! Olbermann! One better - Olbermann and Anderson Cooper snarking it up together. Now that is when the fangirl will melt. And there's a specific clip on the tube of you that I cannot find - there's plenty of clips with the two of them, but not the one I want. And it's just fun to see the "serious" news anchors cross over to the more "entertainment" shows for interviews and guest-hosting. Love it when Anderson Cooper sits in for Regis. Especially with his no hot beverages rule.

galaxygirl- 09-26-2008

This fangirl melts when Keith Olbermann and Joel McHale are on the screen together. Like this clip or this one
