He was disingenous. The show's full of egos, Taylor included (though I have no particular alliance to Taylor), but Chris has a special brand of hubris, imo. Huh, maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention when he was on the show, but he never struck me as all that full of himself. I think he is very talented and he's my favorite male contestant ever to be on the show. he took the praise without giving it up to the fact that that "brilliant" arrangement of "Walk the Line" was something he learned from a Live record. The mere fact that he knew who Live is scored him points with me. No one knows who Live is, at least not where I live and they are one of my favorite bands ever.

amysusanne- 02-29-2008

Live isn't really an obscure band. Sure, they didn't sell as many of their last album as they did "Throwing Copper" (most records don't come close, anyway), but they're still an extremely well known group. Which is why "Walk the Line" didn't go unnoticed and created controversy in the mainstream and not just in the little corners of the internet where nits are picked.

Wow. Two other guys are going to have to be really bad for Luke to survive that performance. BAD song choice.

galaxygirl- 03-04-2008

I wish Simon would tell us what he really thought about Danny's performance ;)(and for what it's worth, I completely agreed with him) David H and David C were both awesome.

extra_cat- 03-04-2008

David Cook was incredible! Jason Castro was impressive too. David Hernandez was also good, though he didn't quite nail it. I also liked Michale Johns. Hmmm... I usually don't really like this many contestants. Haven't seen Chikieze yet, but I'd send home Danny and Luke based on what I've seen so far.

galaxygirl- 03-04-2008

I think you're right, Luke and Danny were the worst of the night for me. I loved Jason as well, he's also really cute *shallow moment of the day* I think David C was the best of the evening. I think Paula is drunk. Oh, and Randy, Don't you forget about me, totally a Simple Minds song. I have no idea why he brought Michael Hutchence up, unless he thought it was an INXS song(and I'm very afraid he did think that)

Ranee- 03-04-2008

I really enjoyed Jason C. - Simon is right, he's getting better each week. David C was also very good. It was nice to not have quite so much fawning over David A too.

galaxygirl- 03-04-2008

David A is getting more and more on my nerves, the Miss America answer to why he picked this song made me go

amysusanne- 03-05-2008

Someone needs to sit David A. down and talk to him about his sunshine and puppies personality and tell him that, sure, he'll make it to top ten, but he'll never win if he doesn't cut the shit. I have no idea if that is all genuine or not, but he's starting to grate on the nerves of even those who are really into him. If he wants to go further, he needs to tone it down. I loved Jason Castro and David Cook. Michael Johns was fantastic, even though his voice is far from perfect. I actually didn't hate Danny's actual performance, but out of the guys up there, he still needs to go. Since he's Vote for the Worst's pick, he probably won't. Not this week, at least. My guesses, unless people overcompensated elsewhere and Danny finds himself edged out, are Luke and Chikeze. Oh, and Randy, Don't you forget about me, totally a Simple Minds song. I have no idea why he brought Michael Hutchence up, unless he thought it was an INXS song(and I'm very afraid he did think that) Yeah, what the hell was that? I guess he *does* think that's an INXS song, which is kind of random. When he said that, I was thinking, "aren't they from Scotland??". It was good that Michael ignored it. Also good, probably, that if Paula, Simon (as if he would know anyway) and Ryan either didn't get the mistake or ignored it because Randy doesn't need much to turn on a contestant and he'd have held it against Michael instead of one of them.

I have no idea if that is all genuine or not, but he's starting to grate on the nerves of even those who are really into him. If he wants to go further, he needs to tone it down. Agreed. I actually don't think he's fake, just trying too hard. Same with the song choices and delivery - too earnest, too much message, too dull. IMO he was better singing "Shop Around." I loved Jason Castro and David Cook. Michael Johns was fantastic, even though his voice is far from perfect. I actually didn't hate Danny's actual performance, but out of the guys up there, he still needs to go. Since he's Vote for the Worst's pick, he probably won't. Not this week, at least. I really enjoyed Jason. What a breath of fresh air to hear that song amidst the stuff they usually sing. If Jason picked it, that alone should earn him points. I thought he sold it (even with the bad note at the end). He's one of the few who always seems to connect to the song, he comes across to me like a musician. Not the strongest voice, but he uses it well. Overall, the guys were impressive. Kind of a shame that they have to eliminate two and two. Of course, I haven't heard the girls, and maybe they also will step it up.

galaxygirl- 03-05-2008

The girls were very underwhelming. I agreed with Simon, Amanda, shockingly enough, was the best.

extra_cat- 03-05-2008

The girls just don't have the charisma the boys do. My friend and I speculated that Amanda wouldn't make it another week when discussing the show today. I do believe we were wrong. She was one of the best tonight. Cady and Asia'h in the death spots of 1 & 2 seem most likely to go home to me. I still like Brooke and think Kristy Lee would do well in country. Neither wowed me tonight though.

amysusanne- 03-05-2008

I thought he sold it (even with the bad note at the end). I think he's the one guy this season who can totally get away with the warbling if he has to. I thought he sold it too. Even though I completely mock television shows for continuing to use that song on their soundtracks, it is one of my favorite songs and that's partly because it's a fantastic song that I *never* get tired of. And even though I'm partial to the Rufus Wainwright version, the original, the Buckley and the Cale versions are all amazing. Jason did it justice. And I think you're probably right about David A.: he has that earnestness about him and a definite eagerness to please. I *do* like him, but at the same time I wouldn't mind taking a swing at him and telling him to snap out of it. Random funny note: TMZ did a "story" about David H. tonight which I was fully expecting to be yet another gay stripper story, but actually turned out to be footage of him singing on a cruise ship. I loved it. I love that one of Simon's faves as *literally* a cruise ship singer. Wonder if he knows... Neither wowed me tonight though. I'll take the counterpoint on that one: I loved Brooke tonight. She was my favorite and that was the first song any of them have sung that I would actually make a point to listen to again. Granted, that's hollow praise, since I don't rush off to iTunes after each show, but if, say, someone emailed it to me (if, say, anyone wanted to do that {g}) I'd put it in the iPod rotation. I liked it a lot. As for Amanda, I didn't agree with Simon that she was the best of the night and I even thought they overpraised her a bit, but I really like her. There's just something about her that I enjoy. She's funny and (prior to tonight when she totally clammed up) I find myself looking forward to the post-judging chat with Ryan. She's charming. Her problem is that she seems really shy and uncomfortable with the actual performance part. So, that they loved it so much confused me because I thought it seemed awkward and self conscious. But, I'm fully aware that it probably plays differently in the room than on my television. Or maybe it's just me. I have no idea who's going home for the girls, but I'd say Kady's still in danger and I'd like for Kristy Lee to take a hike even though I thought she was great tonight. Maybe stick her in the bottom three just to put the fear of God in her. Last night, during the boys' sets, she seemed very aloof and a little rude. She lost points with me there. I think she also lost points with the whole "top ten is good enough for me" even though I know she didn't mean it that way. And if we're slowly weeding out the generic blondes there's a chance that we're ready to cut the pretty black girls singing Whitney by 50% as well. I like Asia'h better, but Sayesha sounded better tonight...she even did the little Whitney nose scrunch. That's gotta count for something...assuming that regular viewers of "Silver Spoons" and early eighties MTV are voting.

And even though I'm partial to the Rufus Wainwright version, the original, the Buckley and the Cale versions are all amazing. Jason did it justice. I have a soft spot for the Rufus Wainwright version, but Jeff Buckley's is angelic. I thought the show was weak tonight. I don't even want to hazard a guess as to who's going home. Why do they all think belting is the way to go? It shows up their weaknesses. Most of them have pretty thin voices in the upper register, even the good singers. I didn't like Brooke as well as you (never could stand that song), but I'll give her credit that she knows what works for her and isn't afraid to do it.

amysusanne- 03-06-2008

I sort of love the fact that the judges fall all over themselves wrt "make it your own, do something different" crap, but Simon was the only one that praised Brooke for taking it in a different direction. I have no idea if that was her own idea or the bands or if it's another one of those stealth covers of someone else's arrangement, but if Cook's gonna get drooled over for "Hello", you'd think Brooke would get some props for doing something totally different with that song and bringing it into her wheelhouse. Interestingly, a "spy" told TMZ that during rehearsals Brooke sucked and Asia'h was, hands down, the best of the girls. It seemed a bit of the reverse live (though I still love Asia'h and it was the lame song that killed her, not so much her voice). It's kind of funny that the guys are, as a whole, stronger right now, yet I can pick the two or three that are definitely gone (along with the one possible "surprise" elimination). It's much more difficult with the girls. I think Carly, Brooke and Amanda (amazingly enough) are all safe, but I'm not even completely confident on that and have no idea who is actually going to go. I'm just going to stick with the Kady/Kristy combo and hope for the best. I have a soft spot for the Rufus Wainwright version, but Jeff Buckley's is angelic. His version is probably the best and prettiest of them all. I can't quite figure why I latched on to the Rufus version, but somehow it became my favorite.
