So Jason Castro in all his dread glory was an opener for an act at the little 400-seat music venue where I volunteer last week. I wasn't at that show, but the tales from folks that were are pretty good.
They said that he was a nice guy (and he had the new wife with him) but that fans? Mostly teenage girls who were star struck and would ask things like: "Where are the dressing rooms?"
"Backstage," they'd tell them.
"And how do I get backstage?"
"You don't."
(People who worked both shows were also very happy to note that the line to get autographs from 83-year-old Ralph Stanley on Saturday was far longer than the line for Jason Castro.)
Also ... So
Howard Stern is in talks to replace Simon? Oddly enough I think Howard is right. It's the only person I can now think of as Simon's replacement.
Howard Stern? Excellent. That will kill that show once and for all.
Anybody else insanely excited about the guest mentor for tomorrow's show? Because I am... /sarscam
Geniuses, each and every one of those talented young people.
I'm really sad I can't mix my meds and the bottle of wine in my fridge, because that might be the only way to get through the next 2 shows.
Oh c'mon people, if you can't see Miley Cyrus for the obvious child prodigy that she is...
Anyone care about the finale this year? I'm glad Lee won. But I would've been glad if Crystal won too. They were both good. I was disappointed that David Cook had a conflict and couldn't appear with all the other idols.
I half watched this season. Sometimes I'd have it on, but the only people who registered with me were Crystal and Casey. I think Lee is already well on his way to being another Taylor, only slightly less marketable. I'm sorry, I see nothing about the guy that is even slightly interesting. He bored the piss out of me and that's in the time I knew he existed which was Tuesday and Wednesday. I have no idea how he won. I'm not even sure how he exists. He is boring on legs.
Crystal's pretty great, tho. I wish her well and I might buy her single since it was written by one of my ultimate favorite singer songwriters in the history of life, Patty Griffin.
I can't say that I've ever cared who won. Or for that matter that I ever watched a finale. (Melinda Doolittle is my favorite competitor ever.) I caught a few highlights a couple of times, this season, but that's generally all I've ever done.
Crystal strikes me as someone who will have a decent, if not big, career and be able to make her living with music. She's not really "pop," but of course I don't think she wants to be pop.
Lee? He's going to join the army of similar bland performers and will end up on the state fair circuit within a couple of years. (Not that Crystal isn't one of a thousand "coffee house circuit" performers, but that's a more defined niche with opportunities for songwriters who can secure a decent livelihood through it, and it requires less mass appeal. I say this judged on the people within that niche who pass through the music club where I work, who make a living on this scale. The more pop oriented need bigger backing groups, bigger venues and bigger crowds to become financially secure.)
They're both songwriters so as long as their contracts let them record some of their own songs they'll be a step closer to financial security. I think Mike has the potential to have a good career ahead of him too.
Ellen
leaves.
I think it's a good thing. She's good on her own show, but she was terrible as an Idol judge.
Does Randy just not have anywhere else to go, or what?
Let's face it, who would want Randy. I've always have found him the most useless of the judges, even Paula occasionally managed to give out good advice.
