Just a guess, but I'd say that whoever was compiling the "cleared music" list just didn't give a crap. Elvis = 60s to them and they threw in the few songs they had the rights to whether they were from that decade or not. I'm all for the list of cleared songs (even if it does tip the scale in favor of songs that will put more money in Clive Davis' pocket), because it does cut down on last minute changes and unprepared contestants, but I don't like theme weeks so early in the game. They should have been given a list of *every* cleared song and allowed to pick their genre and decade themselves. Weeding them out based on their own personalities is the best way to cut the fat in the top 24. Don't make them jump through hoops until top 12.

So far, Michael Johns, David Cook, and the guy with the nappy hair (Jason?) are my favorites. The girls are not impressing me tonight.

amysusanne- 02-20-2008

Yeah...the girls were hit or miss. Whether they were good or bad or somewhere in between, they really didn't do much to change my mind about who I like and who I don't care about. Hopefully they'll bring it next week. The only surprise for me was Ramiele. I didn't care about her at all before tonight, but I thought she was great. That big voice coming out of that tiny girl...she was fantastic. She'll probably be this year's Lisa Tucker: top 12, but just barely.

I'll be having what Randy is smoking. Holy hell, he was sucking up so horribly to Carly Controversy. I'm with Simon, she wasn't all that. The girls were boring. Still not impressed with the current crop of finalists.

amysusanne- 02-22-2008

I tivo'd and fast forwarded through a majority of last night, so I didn't see any recaps of their previous night's "judging" or any new things they might have had to say. I thought Carly was good, but certainly not the best and if they really want her to win, they need to be harsher with her. Then again, this is Randy. He's a douche. What I did see last night, though, were two awesome things: 1. That bizarre group sing which was both one of the best and worst things I've ever seen on television. It sort of ties (which, I guess, means there were three awesome things) with Paula's bizarre "door and knob" comment which both Ryan *and* Simon, unless I blanked out, chose to wisely ignore. 2. Randy looking visibly annoyed when Ryan was being all nicey nice with Paula wrt her song and video. There is nothing about that that I didn't enjoy, from Ryan's whole "smile, nod and praise the slightly unbalanced and vulnerable lady" approach to it all (which I thought was actually kind of sweet and almost sincere) to Randy jockeying for attention while he was doing it. The contestants? Whatever. Other than the surprise that was Jason Castro, I kind of don't really care. I agree with the hype that they're the best they've ever had as a whole because "best group" doesn't equal "all of them are better than Kelly Clarkson" and just the fact that there are no obvious Sanjayas or Covaises in there gives them a leg up on previous years. I actually do like some of them, but I'm ready to weed out another four quickly and see if this thing's actually going to go anywhere. Next week I'd like to see Noriega and Chikeze go. I'm a little more torn on the girls because as much as I've decided that I hate Kady, I almost want to see another couple of weeks of her getting abused by Simon because she looks like a loose cannon and I'm starting to enjoy her Jenny Humphrey bitchface. She looked like she could have killed him Tuesday night and I almost thought she might kick Seacrest in the balls on her way off the stage just to send out a warning.

extra_cat- 02-22-2008

I'm ready for them to cut some more too. Chikezie should have gotten the boot. He was terrible Tuesday night. Garrett was better than he was, but there was no way he was going to win, so it's not like a surprise that he went away. I think that if it really came down to Colton and whats-his-face Frat Boy, that they should have kept Frat Boy. Only, he might have turned into Sanjaya '08. The girls really didn't impress me at all. I liked Brooke okay. I was so bored by the time Carly came along, that I didn't pay much attention. Amanda is interesting, but might be a one-note kind of performer.

I think the three Davids were the best tonight, however the over pimping of David A. is starting to get tiresome.

amysusanne- 02-27-2008

I thought David H. was awesome. That really surprised me. David A. was good, David Cook good, but not great. Mainly I thought the people that were bad last week were better and the people who were great last week weren't quite as good. Except, you know, David H. who, again, kind of surprised me. The only person I found overly tedious last night was Simon. I thought he was in a foul mood and was being just as childish as he was accusing the contestants of being. Given that he and Ryan weren't making their usual kissy faces, I took it that it was no mystery that he was in a shitty mood. Ryan paved over a few rough patches, but for the most part I just thought Simon was left to be a petulant bitch most of the time. Weirdly, Paula was the only one I thought was actually paying that much attention and giving advice that the contestants could use.

extra_cat- 02-27-2008

I agree that all three Davids were good, though David Cook's attitude probably cost him some votes. Michael Johns disappointed me. I really expected more from him. Chikieze was so much better I didn't think he was the same person! If I were predicting who would go home, I'd guess Danny, Jason (without the nappy hair), or Luke.

peggy06- 02-27-2008

I think the three Davids were the best tonight, however the over pimping of David A. is starting to get tiresome. He has a very good voice, but IMO misinterpreted the song. Or maybe just failed to interpret it. In fairness, he's young. But then pick a different song. I thought a couple of people did more with less pure vocal talent. Plus, David A. just doesn't strike me as being very commercial. Isn't the idea to get someone who'll sell a lot of records and concert tickets? This is my first year watching the show, so maybe I got the wrong idea.

galaxygirl- 02-27-2008

I believe David A. fits exactly the Tweenie market(Hannah Montana, High School Musical etc.) and the tweens still buy a lot of records.

peggy06- 02-27-2008

I believe David A. fits exactly the Tweenie market(Hannah Montana, High School Musical etc.) and the tweens still buy a lot of records. Fair enough, but he sounds to me more like musical theater singing style - is that really popular? I can see him getting votes and even winning, but selling? Only if he goes more poppish. But then, I've never heard HS Musical or Hannah Montana, so what do I know? :)

extra_cat- 02-27-2008

Well, Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry show that winning isn't everything! LOL I really liked Brooke tonight.

galaxygirl- 02-27-2008

Well, Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry show that winning isn't everything! LOL So did Jennifer Hudson ;)

I want to punch Carly. Is that a normal reaction? Oooh! My husband and I have a tattoo parlor and I work at an Irish bar and just pretend I never had a recording contract and that no one wanted to buy my record. I really, really love Heart! Don't crush my dreams and make me have to go back to working at that damned tattoo parlor!
