I watched all those clips from the different actors and have mixed feelings. My first reactions to Jacobson and Penn were fairly positive, but only as long as they aren't taking much time away from Omar and Jesse; other than that, I think I could like those guys. I wasn't impressed by either woman, but I imagine at least one of them will end up staying because of the lopsided men:women ratio. I thought Olivia Wilde looked too much like Season 1 Cameron to be a coincidence, perhaps Wilson will point this out to House as his reason for keeping her around.
In spite of the fact that I wasn't happy with any of the old ducklings by the end of last season, I was delighted to see the Omar, Jesse, and Jennifer interviews. I felt like flinging my arms around them and welcoming them back like long lost friends. Like extra_cat, I feel very strongly that I want them back as soon as possible, although they obviously can't come back in their old capacity.
Like a few others, I got the impression that the questions were carefully fed to the actors by FOX in order to get the correct, enthusiastic responses to the new season, which is why the Jennifer Morrison comment about Cameron caring for patients didn't surprise me too much. I honestly believe that TPTB realize they took the Cameron character in a bizarre direction last season and are using a little damage control, via Jennifer, to restore a little of the old "Caring Cameron" image of seasons past. It didn't seem like a coincidence to me that Cameron's sex life was left out of JMo's list of how Cameron had changed.
I also totally agree with whoever said they want to get the House/Cuddy sex over with as quickly as possible so we can move on.

My main concern with that interview is that now Cameron is free to do what she wants without worrying about getting fired? Huh? Since when has Cameron ever been afraid to tell House what's what and do it her way and nag him constantly? Honestly, if she was holding back on him before, I fear for the future. Why couldn't she have just gone away? *whines like a spoiled brat*
Good point, LightMyCandle. And I certainly wouldn't mind if she just went away...at least maybe if she's an ER doctor, she won't work with House much except to refer patients to his team, but I fear this is just wishful thinking on my part.
One of the reasons I can't stand Cameron is that she's a b*tch but she seems to think that she is this great person with these wonderful qualities just trying to survive and do good in such a cruel, cruel world and it drives me nuts that she can't see that she's a b*tch.
I totally agree - and it scares me that JM has this same view of Cameron because that's simply not who she is.

Much better... but am I the only one who thinks that guitar is as ugly as heck? It looks like something went wrong in a plastic molding factory.
I need a guitar expert to fill me in.
Actually the flying V in its more recent incarnations is much thinnner. My son craved one for awhile until we convinced him to choose a Fender Stratocaster instead of a cheap knockoff flying V (because it looked so cool to him). Anyway, that guitar is a collecters item. At the time it was made it was incredibly edgy (in the 1960s). It is a fabulously expensive gutar (at least 10-15 thousand dollars). I always thought my beautiful Martin acoustic was a rolls-royce sort of axe until I've seen the price tag on a collectors item like this (and I don't even like Gibson Guitars--which House seems to favor to an eerie degree)

Please accept my public apology for not seeing that part of the original post.
thank you and i'm sorry that i snapped at you publicly as well. the end, it's over, we talked privately and i won't force the rest of the board to read the recap. {g}
I think I'm too emotionally invested right now to be thinking clearly and it gets worse when I get the message to just suck it up because CCF will be back.
just for the record, even though i'm not entirely sure if that's just general or in response to my opinion, but i would never seriously tell anyone to suck it up. that's not really how i feel about it. i just feel that, just like with the previous three seasons, things don't always play out the way we fear them. the spoiler thread at the other place (which i have now 100% sworn off, yay) turns into a complete mess each season with people practically threatening to throw themselves off of buildings because of the way that david shore and katie jacobs are runining their show. the show generally doesn't play out the way the spoilers, after they've been analayzed over and over and over, indicate. i know it's easiest to jump to the worst conclusion, but that's usually just not the way it is.
i love chase. since day one. he's complex and interesting and he does good things and he does bad things. he's not a saint. none of them are. i enjoy that and i don't think they're going to be taking two steps back on any of the ducklings this season.
For all we know, they'll be back for a minute an episode because there won't be room for them. Those of us with concerns have a real reason to be concerned; and while I'm sure some of you are sick of hearing it, we're afraid that if we don't speak up, should TPTB have scouts on the boards, they'll think that it doesn't matter to the long time viewers if CCF come back--when it clearly DOES matter to a lot of us.
i can tell you with a good amount of certainty that they're not tweaking this show around what they see on the boards. they're going to do what they want to do, not what the loudest group of online fans want them to do. especially when a lot of the posts that float to the top are less about what they want on the show and more about screaming about how david and katie have ruined their show and they've broken promises and they're evil, evil people. they know their fanbase is wider and more varied than the handful of opinions they find on message boards. for that matter, and this is just personal opinion, if i were david or katie, i would immediately stop reading and completely dismiss anything said on a board that featured such misogynistic and hate filled diatribes against the two of them. that's one thing i'm very happy to see *isn't* happening here. whether i like or dislike either of them, i don't think my opinions about the future of the show carry more weight if i point out that katie jacobs is a lying b*tch and make cutesy little comments about wanting her to die.
anyway, if fans have real concerns, writing david shore a letter would hold more weight than posting on the other board or, especially, the official board where the noise ratio is high.
Why couldn't she have just gone away? *whines like a spoiled brat*
and just an fyi: for all the chase fans out there who feel like they're being dismissed, there are a lot of us who like both cameron *and* foreman as well as chase who are trying to figure out why it's perfectly fine to just wish cameron wasn't on the show, but it's not fine to question chase's placement. i like all three of them and i don't want any of the three to leave or be pushed to the background.
eta, because it got lost in an accidental double scroll down:
I'm questioning their originality again. Calling an austronaut themed episode "The Right Stuff"? There was the book, so there's the connection. There was also the Quantum Leap episode called The Right Stuff which had an austronaut theme. I don't expect the writers from House to know that, but I do wonder how many other series of episodic TV have used that title when an austronaut has been part of the plot? It's not really clever anymore, is it?
i'm not sure that it's supposed to be clever on the surface. or, really, clever with the subtext so much either. with the "house" titles they usually tend to pick something obvious that can have multiple meanings for the episode. "love hurts" was kind of a lame title, but it applied to house/cameron, house *and* cameron, harvey and even chase. "skin deep" wasn't that great, but it was about relationships, sexuality, beauty, etc. i'm assuming "the right stuff" is supposed to apply to the POTW on the surface, but really be about the fellowship candidates with a little bit about house thrown in for good measure.
Don't forget guys the clips could just be rehearsals and they may be able to act. I liked mystery girl.
also consider that b-roll stuff and dailies, even when they're the actual scene as shot, often sound a lot different than they do on the final edit. it all sounds less natural than it winds up seeming on the screen. even some of the minor little clips we've seen of the main house cast on stuff like "infanity" sounded stilted because we're so aware of everything else going on in the room.

I don't think I've ever said it wasn't fine to question Chase's "replacement" and if I implied that, it wasn't my intention. It's cool that people like Cameron and Foreman, I don't. I wish Cameron away because I don't like her. Why do I have to take CCF as all or nothing? Why can't I like Chase and not Cameron? Besides, I was never actively lobbying for Chase to stay, I could live without him, he just happens to be my favorite duckling.

When I first read that the title was "The Right Stuff" I thought it was more in reference to the 40 new fellows that House hired and is whittling down. The fact that the POTW is an astronaut was just further tie in.
Edit: Or what amysusanne said. Never mind.
Edit 2: Though I am amused at what some of the tasks House might run those 40 fellows through. I mean, considering some of the insane things the potential Mercury astronauts had to do when they were in contention for the space program. :-)

you didn't. i wasn't accusing you of that or directing at you, i just used your quote because it was the most recent one. i should have clarified and that's my fault.
my point is that it *is* fine that people don't like one character or another or that they wish one character had more time than another. you don't have to like everyone on the show. personally, i want all three to return both as a unit *and* individually. but, it seems that wishing cameron off the show is perfectly acceptable. even wishing cuddy would go away is all good. touching chase or even wilson is totally off limits.
EC said that she was sure we were all sick of hearing about it, but they wanted to get their point across about chase. frankly, with the exception of the people who flounce every month out of anger about the show but, amazingly, neither stop watching or posting about the show, i don't really care about things like that. in reality, you can bitch about chase all you want. you can hate on cameron all you want. i just find it frustrating that there's this sensitivity about chase and chase's placement on the show, but wishing cameron away is fine. and, again, it *is* fine if you don't like her. it doesn't really matter to me. but, i *do* like her. i know i'm not explaining it very well and i have no intention of trying to make people be nice to everybody or never say anything bad about cameron, i just think it would be nice to consider that while there's a vocal group who think chase is treated so unfairly and how frustrating that is, blah, blah, blah, there *are* those of us who like cameron, foreman, wilson and cuddy and feel just as isolated by comments about how *our* favorite characters should just be written out of the show. it's like, don't touch chase, but if cameron never comes back that would be a reason to throw a party.

Hey y'all, can we please move on from The Great Duckling/Newbies Debate and perhaps discuss other spoilers? We're just going to keep going in circles, so it's probably best if we just move along.
Thanks!

amysusanne- 09-15-2007
there are other spoilers? {g}
point taken.
LightMyCandle- 09-15-2007
amysusanne, I get your point now and I'm sorry for the confusion.
Back on the spoilers that don't have to do with the ducklings, old or new, I was thinking about Wilson (shocker) and I was thinking about how in the first ep. he's pranking House and in the second ep. he's playing with House on the hallucinating issue. Does anyone else think that he's taking a lighter, not so serious approach with House this season? If so, is it because of the ADs or the "nice tries are worthless" moments? Am I reading too much into this? It just seems like if the ducklings had left last season Wilson would be worrying himself into an ulcer and this year, while he still seems concerned, he seems to be a little more playful about the situation.
vitawash99- 09-15-2007
Fun fact: if you google "Kutner", a real life Lawrence Kutner is the first thing to come up - he's a nationally known clinical psychologist, specializing in parents and children. He's also totally not South Asian, so I'm wondering if that's part of the character, or whatever, it's like the way Chase is mysteriously Czech.
On a slightly different note, Volakis may just be the most ethnic name they've ever pulled out of their hat. It's Greek in origin.
I wonder if Wilson is trying to help out House the way House helped him get through the divorce. Instead of trying his usual methods, he's actually trying what House would do.
extra_cat- 09-15-2007
True. The other meanings for "The Right Stuff" should become apparent in the episode. Maybe there will be three or four different meanings.

amysusanne, I get your point now and I'm sorry for the confusion.
i'm sorry i was unclear. the words make sense in my head, but clearly they aren't coming out in the right order. {g}

i had thought about the idea that it might have been a new approach, but it hadn't occurred to me that it might be a new approach because wilson's on ADs. it could be. i sort of think that, even though they may play a role, that house and wilson's ways of dealing with one another are a little circular. i'm not sure that either learns from their mistakes and while house doesn't tend to change his methods up that much (he just has varying levels of annoyance motivating him) i think wilson only has a couple of tricks and alternates between them.
It just seems like if the ducklings had left last season Wilson would be worrying himself into an ulcer and this year, while he still seems concerned, he seems to be a little more playful about the situation.
yeah, i think wilson would have been like that scene between him and cameron in "love hurts" times about a hundred if all three had left then. and i have no idea why i've referenced that episode at least four times today. i haven't seen it in a year or so, it's just popping up on my short list of examples for things for some reason. maybe it's the john cho factor. kal is making me think of john.
Ranee- 09-15-2007
Might Wilson's relative lack of worrying have something to do with the time line? I think that Cuddy says in one of the clips its only been two weeks since the team left (or atleast implies it)? So Wilson's maybe heading things off at the pass before it gets really out of hand and taking a more playful tone to jolly House along - then again, maybe Wilson's just in a better mood because of the anti-depressants if he's still on them (& two weeks later suggest maybe yes??)
Two weeks also isn't exactly a whole lot of time to miss the team - so I'm curious to see if Wilson's initial reaction isn't more along the lines of "you need a team, any team" & when the survivor game gets out of hand, its more "this is stupid, you need your old team".
Two weeks also isn't a whole lot of time for Chase & Cameron to settle in to new jobs. Maybe that's why Arizona got dropped, Cuddy simply says "here take a couple of weeks vacation & then come back in these new roles, no muss, no fuss".

Regarding the B-Roll being shown on the site that won't be mentioned:
Is the diner in Omar's scene the same one that the Bones squints squad visit so often? It is certainly the same layout, although I'm not sure about the name.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO2xh-L0wik
If it is the same diner with the same name, it is so much more likely, possible (dream come true) that Stephen will be making an appearance, if he practices so close to PPTH. I know Bones is in Washington/Virginia, but New Jersey is just a quick shittle hop away, if the pie is good.
PS What's a B-Roll and why are they suddenly (to me) showing up for different shows?
