Wilson wants to watch *giggles hysterically*

Namaste- 09-03-2007

Can I just say that I'm digging the fact that not all of the fellowship applicants are young? I know that I've run across fellows who are looking to broaden their expertise in their chosen field. I had a procedure done one time in which the primary was in her mid-50s and her fellow who she was guiding through it probably close to 50 himself. (I didn't realize he was on a fellowship until I saw the paperwork with both of their names and IDs.)

What actually is a fellow Namaste? - or anyone else... I don't think we have them in Australia. I always thought they were a bit like one up from interns or residents, but all three of the 'old' fellows are specialists in their own right.

marykir, I don't know that actor, but he looks sort of like a young Isiah Washington, which might be why he looks familiar. Namaste, me too - I love the idea of adding an older character or two in general, not just that some of the fellowship candidates are older. I worked in a hospital's gen counsel ofice for many years & it drives me nuts that everyone we see is so young (House being the oldest just isn't very realistic). Can I go back to the "Foreman gets fired" thing? I was originally very much in the camp of "he screws up medically", but having thought about it I can't see how one such incidence would get him fired (that's why hospitals have general counsel offices!). I'm thinking that its possibly multiple events combined with majorly pissing off multiple patients and/or Mercy's admin because of doing other things - breaking into a patient's house & getting caught? forcing a patient into a proceedure they don't want? And my favorite idea - treating his team just like House treats his, and how Foreman has treated Cameron & Chase in the past & his new team stages a revolt and refuses to work with him.

Sheep according to wikipedia this is a medical fellowship A fellowship is the period of medical training that a physician may undertake after completing a residency. In the North American system, this refers to a period of one or more years during which the physician takes training in a sub-specialty, such as cardiology or oncology. During this time, the physician is known as a fellow. Although their training is more advanced than that of residents, fellows usually continue to treat patients under the supervision of an attending physician; their role is generally that of a consultant, advising the general medical or surgical services in the area of the fellow's sub-specialty. The attending physician supervising the fellow has already completed a fellowship in the relevant sub-specialty, and is permitted to practice without direct supervision by other physicians. Fellows are capable of acting as an attending physician in the generalist field in which they were trained, such as internal medicine or pediatrics. and this is a residency Residency is a stage of postgraduate medical training certification in a primary care or referral specialty. It is filled by a resident physician who has received a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) and is composed almost entirely of the care of hospitalized or clinic patients, mostly with direct supervision by more senior physicians. A residency may follow the internship year or include the internship year as the first year of residency. The residency can also be followed by a fellowship, during which the physician is trained in a sub-specialty.

And to follow up on the Wikipedia entry, sheep, fellowships are also used for training in new techniques -- say a needle core biopsy instead of an open wire biopsy surgery. You may be a perfectly skilled oncology surgery specialist, but 10 years into your practice, here's this less invasive surgical method. You're not just going to read the directions and then do it (at least I hope not). Instead, ideally you'll train with someone who is already doing that technique. In the case of the show's setting, some of those candidates may be established in their careers, but frustrated because they've seen too many people being misdiagnosed, so they apply for House's fellowship because they want to rectify that shortcoming.

About marykir's clip of the Fox preview show in the Spoilers Only thread, Also when they showed the janitor dressed as a doctor, I swear someone (House maybe?) called him Dr. Buffer. I think he said Dr. Bumper. And does anyone know what song they are playing during the intro to the Preview show?

jj1963- 09-04-2007

I'm going to toss out a theory just for the heck of it. Based on what we've seen in the previews for S4, I have a feeling that we've seen House's angst trajectory reach its zenith, probably with "Merry Little Christmas." The last episode of S3 seems to me to indicate where the series will be going for the last two years of its run -- i.e. in a lighter direction with respect to the character of House and his issues. I don't think we've seen the last of the pain/health issues he continues to experience, but I do think we're probably on our way out of the hole where his social isolation and self-loathing are concerned. It feels to me as if the powers that be have decided to pull House back in off the ledge rather than have him jump, and that what we'll be seeing over the next two seasons will be a gradual return to "normal," or what passes for such in the House-verse. Any thoughts?

DIY Sheep- 09-04-2007

I get by with a little help from my friends: I agree jj1963. I think he is going to be in denial, but he now only has two friends (and one janitor) to annoy so I think Cuddy and Wilson will snap and get him back on track terrorising lots of people, not just them.

saara_zaara- 09-04-2007

Completely agree, jj. Partly because DS has IIRC made statements about how last season turned out darker than they planned & IMO a lot of the audience felt uncomfortable with it. Thing is, given the bottoming out in MLC, either he jumps off the cliff & no show or it heads into an upswing. And I think they very clearly planted the seeds of this at the end of s3 even without the idea of terrorizing 40 survivor candidates - which IMO is going to be a lot of fun. I also think s3 got a little claustrophobic & I can see the candidates providing some real leavening in a more short arc fashion than the individual clinic patients do, since we rarely see them again. I rather liked the idea that we saw folks like Richard & Alli & references to Stein's absence over a couple of eps - it gave a very different sense of continuity than previously.

deeol- 09-04-2007

I think he said Dr. Bumper. I'm pretty sure it was Dr Buffer, as in floor buffer. Could easily be wrong, though. I've only seen it once.

Namaste- 09-04-2007

I thought it was "Dr. Bumper" too.

blacktop- 09-04-2007

I think you are definitely on to something, jj. I am not sure how long the pendulum will swing toward the more bouyant and less angsty side for House. But I think that the season 3 finale did signal that shift. Among other hints: House bending enough to ask Foreman to stay, too late but still quite a signifigant step; House offering a quiet, heartfelt, and non-snarky compliment on Cuddy's legs; House's cigar-fueled exchange with the POTW's husband, and of course, buying the new guitar. I am sure that we will still get plenty of pain and addiction to gnaw away, but I think things will look different for House in this new season, not actually optimistic perhaps, but at least tinged with a kind of hope.

saara_zaara- 09-04-2007

A heads up from the Spoilers only thread, Fox has posted a clip from the s4 premier on its website featuring a guitar-playing House & Cuddy, and why House can't hire a team based on a 10 minute interview. Top right hand corner at http://www.fox.com/house/

hugeegosorry- 09-05-2007

Can someone tell me what it's about since I cant see it.
