I think you're right in that whoever is House's boss is in a tough position because he's the genius maverick doctor who is usually right. However, I think we have seen Cuddy make House provide evidence before allowing a maneuver. She made him in Games. It's one of her lines to say, "I'm sorry, you have to find xxxx first." She didn't allow House to do what he wanted in Son of a Coma Guy even though she agreed with his reasoning. She didn't let House do what he wanted in Euphoria. But it's never easy and usually House gets his way. I think the difference between Cameron and Cuddy is that Cameron said yes because of how she feels about House--whether it's strictly student/mentor or with a shade of infatuation to boot--and Cuddy says yes when House convinces her he's got a good case. In Living the Dream, when Cuddy allowed House to do a possibly fatal maneuver because he's House, House was not happy because she wasn't doing her job if she did that. So, even though Cameron actually ended up making the right call in this case, and Cuddy told her she did, she didn't make it for the right reason, as Cuddy didn't in Living the Dream. Cameron called herself on that because she knew it would be an ongoing problem.

You wanted an episode where "House is worrying about Wilson" for a change... Well, I think that was pretty much the whole of House's Head/Wilson's Heart, don't you think? House being House, he'd never show overt concern for Wilson, but he would...go to extremes to do what Wilson wanted. That is how he shows concern. Everyone lies but actions speak the truth. I really hope that "The Softer Side" deals with Wilson's feelings about House, picking up after "Birthmarks." Otherwise I'd just give up on continuity altogether! TPTB seem very good at continuity for 13, though: that is what you called dogged persistence. Not so good for House.

There's a new casting call for a 19- to 25-year-old actress with ballet experience—for an episode that will film mid–end of March. This probably indicates the season finale or an episode very close to the season finale. As something big will happen to House in the finale, I will be interested to see if this ties in with the ballet dancer at all. (I love ballet.) I did ballet for 16 years and I adore it too. I've always desperately wanted the POTW to be a ballet dancer, I don't know why! So I'm hoping this casting is for the POTW. :)

I'm interested in the PotW who will be intersexual. I've always found that subject interesting for some reason. The parents chose for the child to be a boy but he doesn't know, I'm wondering how that will work since I've read that it's easier to surgically make the children girls so that's what most parents do. Please Lord make House more sensitive than he was to Alex the female testicular cancer patient with AIS!

Since in this episode House is acting so nice that Wilson and Cuddy become concerned that doesn’t seem to be a worry. I read on another site that some are surmising that what House is doing to treat his leg pain is taking estrogen, female hormone, which account for his feminine side becoming prominent. That matches up cleverly with the young POTW situation.

Why would anyone take estrogen to help chronic pain? And wouldn't that make him grow breasts?

Why would anyone take estrogen to help chronic pain? And wouldn't that make him grow breasts? Perhaps he is trying to make himself attractive to Thirteen. Because EVERYTHING is about Thirteen, and I can't think of any other way to tie it into her.

Why would anyone take estrogen to help chronic pain? And wouldn't that make him grow breasts? Women are more sensitive to pain during time periods when their estrogen levels are low. The medical community has known for quite a few years now that estrogen suppresses pain. Some blurbs from a 2003 article (outlining a study) on pregnancy.org: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ A woman's tolerance of pain may have more to do with the power of her reproductive hormones than the strength of her muscles.... The key to pain response in women, Zubieta says, may be the hormone estrogen..... "When estrogen levels are high, the brain's natural pain chemicals -- endorphins or enkephalins -- are much more potent. The response is much greater than when estrogen levels are low," Zubieta says. Pregnancy, he adds, is a good example of this brain chemistry in motion: One of the reasons women can tolerate the pain of childbirth is that just before they deliver, estrogen levels are soaring. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I think most of this estrogen study was focused on helping women with chronic pain, but it wouldn't surprise me to see House — a fictional character on a fictional show which often depicts ridiculous, unrealistic situations — try this method on himself. And yes, my understanding is that too much estrogen in a man could cause him to grow breasts, but knowing House, he'd also take some other medication to counteract that effect.

Interesting stuff about estrogen... But would taking estrogen cause someone to pass out (based on the promo pics)?

NightOwl- 02-01-2009

I think an overdose of estrogen could cause fatigue. I'm not sure why Wilson and Cuddy — upon finding House in his chair with eyes closed — would be concerned enough to check for a pulse. He has slept at work many, many times before. There is no need to automatically assume the worst... unless they have some reason in the ep to assume the worst.

blue- 02-01-2009

I imagine they probably tried waking him up first before panicking - he looks more than just fatigued in the pics.

LightMyCandle- 02-01-2009

I'm not sure why Wilson and Cuddy — upon finding House in his chair with eyes closed — would be concerned enough to check for a pulse. Maybe they've been calling his name/shouting/shaking him and he hasn't been responsive.

waywarddone- 02-01-2009

Thanks for the medical information NightOwl. :D Why would anyone take estrogen to help chronic pain? And wouldn't that make him grow breasts? I'm not certain about breast development but it probably requires higher doses with prolonged usage in concert with a drug suppresion of male hormones to occur so House is probably safe in that dept. But other side effects appear to already be present in the promo shoots, lessen of facial hair growth, fatigue and/or heart issues. He appears unresponsive in the photos in his chair. It also can curtail sex drive and sexual function.

Taiga- 02-01-2009

But in 'Mob Rules' House said gay men take estrogen as an aphrodisiac

NightOwl- 02-01-2009

I imagine they probably tried waking him up first before panicking - he looks more than just fatigued in the pics. Yes, they probably tried to wake him. Something happened which caused them to assume the worst. But I'm not sure what you mean when you say that he "looks more than just fatigued." Fatigue is not just being really tired; fatigue is an extreme weariness, extreme physical or mental exhaustion. In the picture, he simply appears to be asleep, which could point to staying up too late the previous night (and hence just being tired) or extreme fatigue from some other cause (like estrogen, perhaps). But in 'Mob Rules' House said gay men take estrogen as an aphrodisiac  Yes, if a gay man uses estrogen (or anything) as an aphrodisiac, then the intent is to arouse sexual desire in another gay man toward himself. It does not increase sex drive in the man taking the estrogen; as far as I know, it would suppress his drive (as waywarddone mentioned).
