The events of "Bombshells" recalled to my mind Cuddy's words to Wilson in "The Itch." After her raw, passionate kiss with House in "Joy," Wilson urged Cuddy to consider the possibility of starting a romance with House. Cuddy replied that a such relationship would start off exciting "then his inability to open up is not exciting anymore, it's just frustrating. And then it's the inevitable blow up, and we don't talk for two months..." This is pretty much exactly how the arc of the volatile House/Cuddy romance has proceeded so far this season. This means either that Cuddy is a good predictor, or the writers are more consistent and careful than we generally give them credit for.

This means either that Cuddy is a good predictor, or the writers are more consistent and careful than we generally give them credit for. I don't agree that House was unable to open up to Cuddy. He was at his most vulnerable and exposed the day they got together and since then there have been many instances where he was unusually frank and straightforward, sharing his feelings with her, for instance: Recognising that he always ends up hurting people and admitting to being scared of ruining the relationship for that reason, his dissatisfaction with how she kept him at a distance by not inviting him over to her home and getting to meet Rachel, his frustration with her that she wouldn't stand up to her mother and how this might affect their relationship, telling her that being happy in a relationship makes him a worse doctor but that he's prepared to make that sacrifice,... And I don't recall Cuddy complaining about House being withdrawn or uncommunicative or anything like that at any point during their relationhip. Unless by "opening up" Cuddy meant whatever the hell she was referring to in 'Bombshells', which I'm still somewhat confused by. I also don't think most people have criticised the writers for being inconsistent by breaking House and Cuddy up and by touting the same old mantra that House is incorrigibly selfish and unsuited for a relationship. I mean, there were people who have complained that the way the breakup played out seemed OOC, premature or unconvincing, but I think mainly people have been complaining that the writers are being too consistent, that miserable House is getting old and repetitive.

I agree. Sadly, I have to agree (I can't believe I'm typing this). The way it was shown was dissatisfying for everyone, wanting it or despising it. I even wonder if it was done on purpose, to prevent us from hoping for more relationships on this show. But I'm afraid not. Handled like that, I would better have had no House-Cuddy relationship at all. Because now, it is messing with my abilities to watch past episodes : it has ruined my fun, knowing the bitter end. A break up was maybe inevitable, but... not this way. I still have a feeling of a great missed opportunity. Even if I did not watch the show for Huddy, far from it, something is broken since Bombshells ; I certainly have lost some faith in TPTB, and I am sad about it.

Handled like that, I would better have had no House-Cuddy relationship at all. Because now, it is messing with my abilities to watch past episodes : it has ruined my fun, knowing the bitter end. A break up was maybe inevitable, but... not this way. I remember reading a review of Help Me from, I think, the New York Times where the reviewer said of the ending of S6 that the series could end right there, and I remember thinking even before S7 started that she was right because there was no way the writers could, even if they wanted to, keep that feeling of blissful, unbelieving hope alive once the two characters started to really unwrap each other. But that is what is missing for me now -- what does House have to hope for? If he's given up on Cuddy/the possiblity of love, the puzzles don't do it for him anymore, and his distractions don't work, what does he have? Friendships of different sorts with Wilson, 13, Chase and possibly Foreman are nice; they are a step forward for the character, but they haven't kept him from self-destructing before or helped him find much of any kind of peace/meaning. I still have a feeling of a great missed opportunity. Even if I did not watch the show for Huddy, far from it, something is broken since Bombshells ; I certainly have lost some faith in TPTB, and I am sad about it. I may be in the minority here, but the "resolution" of the Huddy arc doesn't really feel any more awkward, untrue, overly labored and nonsensical than the end of the Tritter arc did, at least not yet. That was another corner they wrote themselves into and exited badly. My faith in the TPTB is shaken by what the writers themselves have said about the character of House and how malleable they are willing to make the other characters to serve a pre-ordained conclusion.

No, you're right. there's that same feeling "let's end it as quick as possible, whistle and get back to business, while hoping they won't notice. I hated the Tritter arc with a passion, at the time. Found it very hard to watch. And I agree with your shaken faith, too. Bending the characters in shape to fit a storyline and pretending it was perfectly done...Very deceiving. My fear is that they won't be able to restore any living interactions between House and Cuddy without more character disfiguration, and they'll have to write off Cuddy. Sadly.

I agreed with that article as well.
