Not Dennis Gant: Omar Epps
For all your Omar Epps discussion. I mean, there are things that you can discuss about him, right? EDIT: Title by popular decision.

Taiga- 08-19-2007

Oh dear, this isn't the way to start a thread but it's the only place to do it... I just read a DVD review where the reviewer was speaking of the cast apart from HL. S/He said they were excellent, "especially Omar Epps" and then went to praise him and only him. I see this a lot in media coverage of the show. Am I the only one who thinks that OE isn't all that? He's very good, better that some of the other actors on the show, but I don't think he's that brilliant. I mean, because of his acting in 'Euphoria' I thought the final diagnosis would be rabies. Thoughts?

I don't think he's as brilliant as a lot of people seem to think. He has good moments, but for the chances the writers are giving him to show he's that good, he's not delivering all that well. Besides, for me he'll always be Dennis Gant and his tragic demise is still one of the most shocking/surprising things I've seen on tv(that way back before I became a spoiler whore lol).

I think he's very good at conveying the emotional context, but he struggles with the long speeches the writers insist on giving him. Euphoria and House Training both suffered as a consequence.

Thoughts? Oh yeah, I read that article and had the very same thought. Personally I think he tends to either overact (Euphoria for sure) or underact at times. He's not bad but I also can't see why he gets singled out so much.

I mean, because of his acting in 'Euphoria' I thought the final diagnosis would be rabies. Thoughts? LOL. I think OE does a pretty damn good job most of the time. He does little things really well. Sometimes his facial expressions absolutely crack me up. And his back and forth with House is quite excellent. Where he loses me is when he tries to wallow in the depth of some emotion of another. He is not helped by the fact that the writers sometimes saddle him with these soliloquies that are painful no matter how you deliver them. Where OE wins with me is when he's with his element on the "team." I never doubt his exchanges with any of the regular cast. Where he completely loses me is his heart to heart discussions with the patients. Whether it's been Victoria the homeless woman, the brother/sister/husband/wife pair, the 18 year old taking care of his siblings, the toothpick kid or, especially, Lupe, I just want to hit fast forward because it all comes across sounding so false to me. I don't quite understand why there is such a dichotomy but it is there.

Do we have a quote-type-thingy for this thread? Are we going to?

Taiga- 08-19-2007

I've changed my mind, "Not Dennis Gant" gets my vote. Because I liked Dennis Gant and dislike Foreman

Silja- 08-19-2007

I nominate: Not Dennis Grant: Omar Epps

Hail the Random- 08-19-2007

If we get a couple more ideas, I'll put up a poll.

sautomne- 08-19-2007

I like, "Not Dennis Grant: Omar Epps". The very first time I saw OE on House, I was wracking my brains trying to figure out where I had seen him before. Then I realized, "Oh it's that guy! From ER! What'shisname...the one the that threw himself under a bus...or a train...or maybe a helicopter...something big, anyhow."

Silja- 08-19-2007

I don't know what it says about ER that a bus...or a train...or maybe a helicopter...all make perfect sense.

galaxygirl- 08-19-2007

I don't know what it says about ER that a bus...or a train...or maybe a helicopter...all make perfect sense. I know!! lol, it was the El. I had to double check it to be sure. I refuse to talk about ER and helicopters

TrooperCam- 08-19-2007

Jeez guys, thanks a lot. I'm trying to catch up on my ER episodes. Now you've all ruined it for me *goes and sulks in corner*

Wasn't there an interview recently with OE - there might be a quote in there (unfortunately the only thing I can recall about this was when it was discussed at cough:theotherplace:cough was that he answered neither when asked briefs or boxers.
