I just read a review of one of his movies that said his career often obscured what a good actor he was. Very true. I adored Columbo but after a while it got to the point that he could do an episode in his sleep and still be entertaining. And then, every once in a while, he'd take on a different role and he'd blow your socks off.
Reading a couple of obituaries, it turns out that he had Alzheimer's and dementia. His wife and daughter got into a fight over his care and the courts had to appoint a conservator. So, sad as it is, I guess it was time.

Sad, even if it isn't really unexpected.
I'm very sad about Jani Lane's death. I spent many hours in my youth listening to songs he wrote and sang with Warrant. I saw Warrant 5 times in concert through the years and met Jani twice. He was very nice when I met him. A vastly underrated talent has passed away.
I like how, knowing that it was going to happen, he did everything he could to protect the company he built.
That was a man who packed three lifetimes of living into one short one.
Anne McCaffrey, creator of the Dragonriders of Pern and the Ship who Sang books died on Nov 21 of a massive stroke at her home in Ireland. She was 85. In recent years she had collaborated with her son Todd McCaffrey on several of the Dragonrider books and the latest, Sky Dragons, is scheduled to be released in June 2012.
Not sure where to post this, but Abe Vigoda lives in my brother's neighborhood in NYC. My brother frequently sees him carrying bags of groceries and looking like...well, Abe Vigoda.
