Peter Graves has died. Best known for Mission Impossible, of course...but was also Myron in House's Love Hurts episode. Remember the "little blue pills" and the mismatched wedding rings?
My favorite Peter Graves part was Stalag 17.
And he was James Arness's brother.
He was great in Stalag 17.
-Sprechen sie deutch?
-No, I don't sprechen sie deutch.
-Maybe just one word? Kaput? 'cause you're kaput, Price!
-When was Pearl Harbor, Price? Or don't you know?
-December 7th, '41.
-What time?
-6:00. I was having dinner.
-6:00 in Berlin. They were having lunch in Cleveland.
I loved that scene between Peter Graves and William Holden. However, my favorite role of Peter Graves was Capt. Oveur in "Airplane."
RIP
Damn. Alex Chilton of Big Star and Box Tops died today.
House wise, Big Star's "I'm In Love With a Girl" was used in S5's "The Itch."
Fid totally harshed my mellow by texting me this info earlier tonight.
I'm just gutted, not going to lie. I saw Alex Chilton once, with Counting Crows. The crowd were dicks (my sis and I had to be pulled out by security because the crowd wash moshing to Mr. Fecking Jones, for cripes sake), but AC was far from a charmer.
Still...September Gurls was my jam back in the day. And The Replacements & REM were my fave bands back in high school. Dude knew how to write some tunes.
I went down to my local & had a pint in his honor, tonight.
It's a seriously conflicted moment for me as I said to RSH on the phone earlier. Alex Chilton was one of my great musical heroes - I'm a massive Big Star fan and he remained so...until I met him. Let's not speak ill of the dead, but we had words and my idolatry was forever crushed.
I prefer to remember him as a brilliant musician/songwriter and I had a good cry (and several pints) not only for the beauty lost but also for my young, naive dreams.
Rest in peace, Alex, you were a complex, difficult, talented, brilliant, important man to me. Thank you for what you brought to my life.
ETA: If I could, I'd like to leave you with the Big Star song that has meant the most to me in my life which Alex wrote with Chris Bell. I'm sitting here bawling just reading the lyrics. It has meant more to me than you could know.
The Ballad of El Goodo
Years ago my heart was set to live, oh
And I've been trying hard against unbelievable odds
Gets so hard at times like now to hold on
Guns they're waiting to be stuck by
And at my side is God
And there ain't no one going to turn me around
There ain't no one going to turn me around
There are people around who you tell you that they know
And places to send you and it's easy to go
They'll zip you up and dress you down and stand you in a row
But you know you don't have to
you can just say no
and there ain't no one going to turn me around
there ain't no one going to turn me around
there ain't no one going to turn me around
there ain't no one going to turn me around
I've been built up and trusted
broke down and busted
they'll get theirs and we'll get ours
if we can just hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
years ago my heart was set to live, oh
and I've been trying hard against strong odds
gets so hard at times like now to hold on
But I'll fall if I don't fight
And at my side is God
and there ain't no one going to turn me around
there ain't no one going to turn me around
ain't no one going to turn me around
there ain't no one going to turn me around
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
Stop making me cry. Do you have any idea how emotionally effed up it is to cry while watching Craig Ferguson? It's just WRONG!
I can't even watch Craig. I'm crying too hard and listening to #1 Record.
Dude, I *hated* this guy as a person. I worshipped him as a musician. I'm a mess.
This
CBC blog post has embedded links to a lot of the classic songs.
For all of us old timers:
Fess Parker has died.
Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett and coonskin caps.
Robert Culp died.
He was supposed to be the sole star of I Spy. I'll always give him credit for insisting the Bill Cosby get equal billing because they were playing a team. It was the first time a black actor had star billing in drama series.
He just seemed like a straight up, stand up guy. One great thing about Hulu is having shows like I Spy available for viewing again. (Amazing how slow moving it seems in comparison to today's shows.)
