A representative of so many special people who did what they could do to help. She might not have wanted the honor she received, but she did earn it.

What an amazing woman. In other news, Art Clokey, the creator of Gumby, has passed away at the age of 88.

fffaw- 01-11-2010

Filmmaker Eric Rohmer has passed as well.

I met Miep Gies some 30 years ago when she spoke at my school. Very special to realize that a "normal" woman can become a 'hero'. She was so very modest about it, but I will never forget her. It made me think about which choices people make in difficult circumstances.

fffaw- 01-12-2010

That's amazing that you got to meet her, Jonne. If anyone would like to leave a message for Miep's family, there is a guest book here.

Damn it. Teddy Pendergrass is dead at 59. Loved him.

fffaw- 01-14-2010

Here's one that seemed to come out of left field: Indie musician Jay Reatard was found dead at age 29. I hope 2010 isn't going to be like 2009.

I hope 2010 isn't going to be like 2009. It's the 14th and we already have 5 new people in this thread. Some of these people would not get posted if we didn't have a special thread for this but still...

Aw, Kate McGarrrigle died. I last saw her a couple of years ago when she, Rufus and Martha were all performing at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival. (For those of you not in the folk music scene, she's also the mother of Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright and the ex-wife of Louden Wainwright III) And here's the whole clan performing. And yes, they all really are that musical.

Boffle- 01-19-2010

Oh, that's sad. Didn't she used to perform with her sister as well? As I remember, they were lovely.

fffaw- 01-19-2010

Oh no! That's awful! I've seen her perform as well. :-(

misanthropicobs- 01-19-2010

This is probably old news to most of you but just in case - 2009 included the deaths of three of the best science fiction/fantasy writers Philip Jose Farmer in February 2009 - His books included the Riverworld series. J G Ballard in April 2009 - His books included The Drowned World, Crash and Empire of the Sun, the book Spielberg based the movie of the same name on. David Eddings in June 2009 - His work included the fantasy worlds of the Belgariad and the Malloreon.

When I was a kid many of us were introduced to the McGarrigles through an NFB animated short that ran on television a lot. For anyone interested, you can find it here.

Holy crap. Also dead today. (Or reported today) Robert Parker, who wrote the Spenser mystery/detective series -- Robert Urich starred in the TV version of Spenser. and Erich Segal who wrote the novel "Love Story" (which spawned endless Lifetime Movie wannabes) and, more importantly, was co-writer of the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" movie.

sautomne- 01-19-2010

Damn! I can't believe that Kate McGarrigle died. I knew she had been sick with cancer, but I the doctors had got it in time.
