Boffle- 10-23-2010

filmlover I was quite moved by Ordinary People and, try as I might, I've never been able to watch Raging Bull past about half an hour. I know it puts a big dent in my cred as a serious film fan, but there it is. I know it's beautiful and well done, and Ordinary People would likely look a bit dated now, but I liked it better. I always wondered if Scorsese was trying to outdo Kazan's On The Waterfront with Raging Bull. As beautiful as RB is, it didn't engage me nearly as much as OTW. But like I say, I've never seen the whole thing, so I'm probably missing out.

Casting announced, finally, for The Hobbit. Martin Freeman as Bilbo! I'm also amused by the list of actors cast as dwarves. Like Aiden Turner from "Being Human." Whoo-hoo! I'm VERY excited about this as Martin Freeman is a favorite of mine. Have you seen him in Sherlock? I think that Bill Nighy may be up for the role of Smaug. Also, great news.

I haven't seen "Sherlock" yet. It starts airing here tomorrow, but I've heard plenty of positive news about it.

Does anyone have trouble taking the new Rachel McAdams movie "Morning Glory" seriously because of the House/Wilson implications? :) IKWYM! I've had to suppress my giggles whenever I see the trailers for this movie. Casting announced, finally, for The Hobbit. Martin Freeman as Bilbo! I'm also amused by the list of actors cast as dwarves. Like Aiden Turner from "Being Human." I like Martin Freeman too, and am very much looking forward to "Sherlock". (Loved him as Arthur Dent, though I still wish Hugh could have played that role!) But the most exciting part for me in The Hobbit's casting news is that Richard Armitage will be playing Thorin Oakenshield, the Leader of the Dwarves. I should add that I'm not actually a Tolkien aficionado, just a Richard Armitage fangurl! If you're curious about the actors cast in The Hobbit so far, here are their bios as compiled by the true Tolkien aficionados. Peter Jackson is quoted as saying, "Richard is one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today and we know he is going to make an amazing Thorin Oakenshield. We cannot wait to start this adventure with him and feel very lucky that one of the most beloved characters in Middle Earth is in such good hands." If you're unfamiliar with Richard Armitage's work -- and/or if you liked/loved/adored the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice -- I cannot recommend the 2004 BBC production of North & South highly enough! (It is NOT the civil war epic but an adaptation of the novel by Victorian writer Elizabeth Gaskell.) Available on Netflix's Watch Instantly list. And now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

I just saw "The King's Speech." It was so good. I actually want to see it again. The theater was packed and the audience applauded afterwards.

Boffle- 01-02-2011

Same when I saw it. I loved "The King's Speech". I didn't expect it to be well attended but it was packed and everyone applauded at the end. I plan to see it again in the theater and I can't remember having done that in many, many years. Bravo!

I felt so bad for him. Before he became King and he had to give speeches, I just kept thinking "Stop making the poor man do this." I understand that it was his duty and responsiblity. I just felt sorry for him during those times. You could feel his fear when he was looking over the crowds of people staring at him. The scene where he was talking about his nanny? Sad. I felt so much sympathy for him.

Me three! I too loved "The King's Speech," and the same thing happened when I saw it -- the audience clapped at the end. This almost never happens with the snooty audiences in this particular arthouse movie theater where TKS was playing. I'm planning to see it again next weekend! :thumb up:

Does anyone have trouble taking the new Rachel McAdams movie "Morning Glory" seriously because of the House/Wilson implications? :) Haven't seen it so wonder what you're referring to. can you explain without divulging too much? Or DM me privately - don't mind being spoiled...Thanks

Chipmunk_love- 01-03-2011

Oh, I never saw it, houserocket7. I was just referring to the trailer and to the title of the movie itself, which reminded me of an early S5 episode in which House referred to masturbation as "morning glory" (or maybe it was Wilson).

So Joss Whedon filmed a version of "Much Ado About Nothing" in 16 days. Because he wanted to. And without telling anyone. In "guerilla" filmmaking style. Updated, with one character told of an impending visit via a message received on his iPad. (I suppose that cuts down on the pre-planning/logistics, since people could wear their own clothes as their costumes, more or less.) And it's got original songs. This is gonna be awesome or a disaster. No in between. But I'm kind of geeked about it.
