There's also the mysterious Dr. Stein but he may be in Africa.
What kind of oncologist do you think Wilson is? I used to think he was a Radiation Oncologist, but now I think he's a Oncological Surgeon. It's a good fit for the caring/jerk dichotomy he's got going on.
407- 08-08-2007
Well, he's not really an Oncologist at all, is he? He's only got a degree in Oncolgy.
I guess Wilson could be surgical, but on this show just because a character is shown doing surgery, doesn't mean they should actually be able to. I still think he's a Radiation Oncologist.

No one really seems to be medical or surgical. Remember, House, Wilson and the dukclings all seem to be in surgery with their patients.
And no, 407, he isn't.;)

Wilson mentions a mysterious "Brown from Oncology" in an episode. Babies and Bathwater, I think?

I think that in the Houseverse oncology - excuse me, "oncolgy" - is a catch-all.
Since Wilson's patients are always dying, I like to think that Wilson is like House in that he specializes in hard-to-treat cases. There's no canon to support that.
Which brings me to the question of whether or not Wilson is a good doctor. I think he's supposed to be, because House respects his medical opinion, but dammit the writers sure make him look incompetant.

Well, Chase's dad knew who he was and came all the way from Australia to see him.

Wilson was also made department head at a very young age, which would usually be a good indicator of high performance (and a strong ability to schmooze). Of course, as we've said, indications from the show are that it's a department of one. They couldn't at least hire some extras for him to be advising/consulting with/doing performance reviews for?
Apologies for repeating a rant I've expounded on elsewhere, but I am furious with the turn they had Wilson take in the Tritter arc of doubting his own capabilities as a doctor. "House got the diagnosis and I didn't," mused Wilson - well, DUH, he's a world-famous diagnostician and you're an oncologist. Why would you be better than House at House's job? Because he'd suck at your job.
Or, at least, before S3 House would've. The Tritter arc, in my opinion, is also where the show started to downplay Wilson's overall medical competency. It's like they felt that the only way to make House seem stellar (and thus worth saving from prison) was to make Wilson look like a chump. Assholes.
My favorite thing about earlier seasons (House V. God is a perfect example) was that House and Wilson complemented each other's strengths. House was the better diagnostician (possibly better with procedures), but Wilson was better at patient care. As viewers, we got to contemplate for ourselves which of those was more important. Season Three became the season of House being the king of all aspects of health care. As someone wiser than me said, House turned into a Gary Stu, and it's infuriating.

So true. The contrast between 'Autopsy' and 'Family' drove me crazy. In 'Autopsy' House was a consultant on Wilson's case, but Wilson was the attending and was in control. He dealt with Andie's mother, he pushed House for more evidence before letting him operate on Andie's heart, he held firm when House wanted him to talk to Andie about the procedure. He clearly was fond of Andie.
Then we had 'Family'. First of all, Wilson got into trouble for zapping Nick's bone marrow before being sure that Matty was disease-free - pure incompetance. Then he deferred to House in everything. "That's it, we're done with Nick?" He's YOUR patient, Wilson, not House's!! I couldn't believe it when he said that. Wilson folded and compromised his own stance on dealing with patients when House criticized him. He didn't treat his patient(s) at all, after the opening scene we didn't see him with Nick or Matty once! The only time he came off well was when he helped to diagnose the kid who DIDN'T have cancer!
