Scarlett Johansson is a simply awful singer. That is all.

radiosweetheart- 05-27-2008

Watched that video a few weeks ago. I was unimpressed with her musical stylings-but the Boy was amused. I'm thinking he might have been paying attention to different *ahem* aspects--of the video.

Oh dear. Was that a one-shot or is she releasing a whole album? But I do give credit to anyone who is known for being beautiful for allowing themselves to be photographed au naturel. When I see something like that video I'm always reminded of Shelley Fabares' story about her becoming a singer when she was on the Donna Reed Show. She said she was the type of teenager who always did what she was told, but when she was informed that she'd be making a record she ventured to say that she couldn't sing. They ended up doing dozens of takes and, because she hit different notes in tune on each take, they piece Johnny Angel together one note at a time.

From what I can tell, it's not even a step above what Paris Hilton's "album" was. (I took a lot of crap at work because I admitted to vaguely enjoying her single Nothing in This World---not because PH is such an amazing artist or anything, but I thought it had a couple of nice, if not terribly interesting, pop hooks. It could have been waaaaay worse. At any rate, I haven't lived it down yet and my music recommendations have been treated as suspect every since. ) God, I would so hate to be the audio engineers working on "Johnny Angel" under those circumstances. Painful. You start to question your very existence at some point. On another note, can I admit that I really like Fall Out Boy's cover of "Beat It." It's not quite as great as Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" but damn, I like it. Plus the video has Buster from Arrested Development--always a plus.

Scarlett Johansson is a simply awful singer. That is all. I just clicked over to the Tom Waits original. My ears recovered after a few more clicks through the Waits' catalog.

My own special day of hell--I've been working all day on a project which required more exposure to kid and tween "rock" than the average person should ever be subjected to. Like, seriously, hours and hours of this stuff. And then a stray thought entered my head: what if, for some god-forsaken reason, I was stuck on an island and instead of my own desert island disc choices I was left with nothing but the la-*test*-('") volume of Kidz Bop. A sample for those that may not be aware. It eventually became a delusional, crazy-making thought and I had to go have a lie down.

Hail the Random- 06-02-2008

You had to listen to hours of Kidz Bop? I am so sorry to hear that. Finally got around to seeing my first concert! I feel all bouncy now. (Probably because it's after 11 and a school night, but the hell with that, there's only 2 weeks left.)

arizonamyrie- 06-02-2008

Man, some of the songs they use with Kidz Bop are just WRONG!

radiosweetheart- 06-02-2008

If I ever have kids (famous last words, eh?)...If I ever have kids there will be no insipid Kiddie-fied versions of popular music. There are plenty of options for decent kid based music. Farmer Jason (Jason Ringenberg of Jason & the Scorchers), Dan Zanes, They Might be Giants. I grew up listening to rock'n'roll as I'm sure everyone else here did, too and I turned out fine. (Shush you!) Do kids actually want to listen to whiny out of tune renditions of popular song? I'm asking anyone that might know actual children-which I do not.

melly- 06-02-2008

I'm asking anyone that might know actual children-which I do not. My kids (ages 5,6,8,and 11) never seemed to take a liking to the the Disney pop stars or kidz bop type stuff. They like mommy's hair bands better.

extra_cat- 06-02-2008

I can't imagine letting my kids (if I ever have any) listen to that stuff either. I'll do like my best friend--let them listen to the same music I do and if it needs censoring, I'll avoid certain songs. I can't help but laugh when I think of one friend whose 4 year old niece once went through the mall singing at the top of her lungs, "Lay your hands on me! Lay your hands on me!" LMAO

TrooperCam- 06-03-2008

I'm such a 12 year old-I had R Kelly on the playlist today and all I could think of was the trial. Yay I get to put everyone to sleep with John Mayer woohoo

So, just the classical music until I was old enough to realize there was music out there other than that.

Growing up we didn't have a lot but we always had music in the house, either the radio ro records we got from the library. I can't imagine not hearing music till I was 14.
