I'm going to invent a time machine and go back and shoot whoever came up with the brillant idea that songs should end with a long ramp. Huey Lewis and the New's Heart of Rock and Roll is 4:51 in length and the final minute is nothing but unnecessary musical drivel.
And yes I know why it was done but listening to the final minutes made me want to have an accident with the board's off button.

And the rest of "Heart of Rock'n'Roll" doesn't make you want to commit violence?
Chipmunk_love- 04-30-2008
Well, not when they mention your hometown! ;)
radiosweetheart- 04-30-2008
The heart of rock'n'roll does, in fact, beat in Cleveland. Or at least the Northeast Ohio region, the North Coast if you will.
It is a fact that has been proven time and again by the likes of The Michael Stanley Band, the Raspberries and of course Devo and the Black Keys if yr into that (half of whom are from Akron-but I digress...) the possibility of an omission of my hometown is a shocking concept around which I cannot wrap my mind.
And great-now I'm gonna have to YouTube that "I Wanna New Drug" song that I only just got out of my head 3 days ago. DAMN YOU 80s BLUE EYED SOUL! Get out of my brain!!!!
Namaste- 04-30-2008
You'd love the mix CDs one of my co-workers compiled, RSH. He's from Cleveland and has tracked down and created three CDs featuring Cleveland and northern Ohio bands. Yes, the Raspberries are among the groups. He spent years collating them -- from vinyl, downloads, concert recordings, you name it.

My love for The Raspberries knows no bounds. Cleveland's finest, IMHO. And they are still a startlingly ass kicking live band.
radiosweetheart- 04-30-2008
Oh man, Namaste-I would love that. I'd probably flip my lid over it, as the kids say. That would be a total trip. Almost as cool as finding an unedited VHS tape of Big Chuck & L'il John Present Death Car on the Freeway
Reading the wikipedia entry: http://tinyurl.com/43dt69, I am shocked by how unbelievably un-PC that show was. It was 75% Polish jokes, 10% really terrible movie, 15% ads for Patio Enclosures

Suddenly I am 9 again.

Rant Moved From American Idol Thread (Self-Modding-it's all the rage!)
500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. If this is the list they use, next week might not be so bad and completely made for Cook.
Oh come on! "Just the Way You Are" is the only Billy Joel song on the list? "Summer, Highland Falls" is a FAR superior song. Even if you stick with just the hits that's a weak choice. And "Daydream" is a much better Lovin' Spoonful jam. Now, I'll give them Big Star's "September Gurls"and but Tom Petty's "American Girl?" Really-"Here Comes my Girl" is more vibrant and I would hazard a guess it's a more important song to more people.
The more I read this list the more my brain hurts. "Dancing in the Dark" is considered more influential than anything on Darkness on the Edge of town? I beg to differ.
Who puts those lists together? Escapees from the Lame Asylum?
Let's rant about lists! It's fun!
Chipmunk_love- 04-30-2008
"Wabash Cannonball"? Seriously? I only know this song because it's played at all of our football games. I won't lie - for a while, I had thought we'd written it!

Moved my repsonse from AI thread too:
# Aerosmith - Dream On
# Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
I think rock n' roll was already in pretty good shape by the time Aerosmith came on the scene.
Also, I have a problem with any "best of" list that contains something by Rush. Just sayin'.
ETA: Why is 'Tennessee' by Arrested Development on that list? I mean, I like the song but, it's not better than, say, something by Richard Thompson.

Gary Glitter?!!

They're songs that are most influential -- not the best. "Tennessee" makes the list for its crossover appeal with hip hop to a white audience, I suspect. Aerosmith for bringing hard rock into an age that was pretty heavy on prog rock and singer songwriters in the late '70s. (Likewise Rush is there for prog rock.)
sautomne- 04-30-2008
I know what the list is for. And I still think that those choices suck.
radiosweetheart- 04-30-2008
Sauty-Are you deny the genius of Geddy? Are you dissing Tennessee? If yes, then, madam, I believe I have no recourse but to insist that we rumble post haste.
