::bellows AND NOW I COME TO YOUUUUUUUUUU, WITH OPPPPPPPPPPPPEN ARRRRRRRRRRRRMS!::

Just came here to say I'm currently listening to Journey's Greatest Hits and I kind of hate you, Sauty.
I'll know you've really hit bottom when you start listening to this Steve Perry gem.
Chipmunk_love- 04-03-2008
John Legend recorded a version of U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)" in celebration of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. Rarely am I actually moved by a performance, but this was amazing.

What does it mean that I remember the date of the MLK assassination from a U2 song? (Granted, it was late afternoon April 4, rather than "early morning, April 4," but I give them a pass on that.)

Cheer up RSH! If and when you do hit rock bottom, I'll be there waiting for you. I have a sick, inexplicable fondness for that song. I've probably kicked whatever shred of indie cred I had left to the curb by saying so, but alas, I cannot lie. I love "Oh Sherry"
ETA: I had forgotten how BAD the video was though. Steve Perry's pants are so tight he has camelhump. Not cute.

Oh! I didn't follow the link, so I didn't realize what video it was. A classic eighties VH1 staple. And a Night Tracks favorite. I miss the eighties and their abundance of bad, but awesome videos.
radiosweetheart- 04-04-2008
Am I to gather from this conversation that "Oh Sherry" isn't an alterna-rock staple? I thought it was right there with "We hate it when our friends become successful." I mean, when I'm at bars, that and "Devil Went Down to Georgia" are always on my jukebox playlist.
That would help explain the high level of incredulity in the comment: "You get drunk and listen to Journey?"

Is there anything funnier than A Very Perry Christmas? What does it mean that I remember the date of the MLK assassination from a U2 song? (Granted, it was late afternoon April 4, rather than "early morning, April 4," but I give them a pass on that.)
The first time I saw U2 in concert, there was that uncomfortable moment where segments of the crowd went nuts with they lyric "shot rings out in the Memphis sky." It was that dawning realization that there were fans (many, many fans) that had no idea what that song was about.

"Devil Went Down to Georgia" is also mandatory on my wedding reception playlist. I get a few strange looks, but there's no other song that gets people up and dancing faster than that one.
It may be a strange omen for a marriage just getting started though.

I have honestly never thought about that before...that there could be confusion or a misunderstanding or even misinterpretation of the song.

Stay pure, though...go with the "son of a bitch" version.

I'm going to operate on the assumption that the people asking you this are actually blackout drunks who, in fact, don't remember that they too tend to listen to Journey when they're drunk.

I'm sure everyone assumes that since they're Irish, they must only be allowed be to sing about Irish issues, like "Sunday Bloody Sunday."

No, I don't think that's it. There are plenty of people that have no idea what that song means, either. It is a catchy refrain to sing drunk in a bar, though.
amysusanne- 04-04-2008
I think it's probably a bit like REM's "The One I Love". I have never been to an REM concert where there wasn't a couple next to me or in front of me or just generally entirely too close to me who didn't cuddle up to one another and make kissy faces during that song. WTF? Stop it, it's not a love song.
radiosweetheart- 04-04-2008
Kinda depends on yr definition of 'love' doesn't it?
If you think of love as something to do when there's nothing on TV, then that's a great choice for a love song.
Personally, I believe "And So It Goes" is the greatest love song and it will be the first dance at that wedding I will never have.

Perfect coming from the man pessimistic enough to use footage of his doomed (though not at the time) wedding to Carleen Carter for the video of "Cruel to Be Kind"
Ah, love.
radiosweetheart- 04-04-2008
Ha! I meant the Billy Joel song by the same name.
But I might change it up and use the Nick Lowe song. That would be even better.
I need to find the video for Cruel to be Kind. busybusy
