Ray Romano just got up to start talking, and they cut to a clip of later on suddenly!!!
Seriously!!! THIS IS F***ed up!

I never got Trapper, though judging by fanboards there are so many people who love him. I didn't like Henry much either: thought he was to bumbling and not very funny for a CO. I much preferred BJ and Potter, and thought seasons 4, 5 and 6 were the pinnacle of the series. It definitely dragged towards the end but Charles (and David Ogden Stiers) was the definite saving grace.
I was just watching some Winchester episodes recently and suddenly made the connection of him as a direct television ancestor to House. I was surprised to not have heard of the connection before: the only other TV doctors I think of tend to be more sensitive or idealistic. (And I've seen TV critics mention House as being influenced by everything from The Sopranos to freakin' Columbo!) I just visited the insanely comprehensive Wiki character bio and chuckled at the line that Winchester "alienated himself from the rest of the camp with his arrogant, self-centered, and at times, cold persona. He did, however, prove to have a sense of humor and a clever wit, which were not above pranks." Gee, wonder who that sounds like...(and I just remembered they both had a drug addiction, too!)
Yeah, early Potter an BJ were awesome. I also hated Henry. He just seemed like a fool who didn't know what he was doing. There's a fine line between being unsure about things, and just being a fool who shouldn't be in comand. He crossed it to often for my liking. And yes, David was a lifesaver to that show. He really is a fine actor (though I don't like him much on The Dead Zone) and he brought back a sense of reality to the show. I like how he counter balanced Hawkeyes rants that grew old.
Hey, maybe Charles was Blythes dad? Hahaha, just kidding. But that quote sounds exactly like some other doctor we know. *wink wink*

(JenButterfly and I are talking about M*A*S*H as an antecendent to House, BTW!)

The problem I think is that Henry was there solely to be a comedic character. I guess he was an okay surgeon though I don't recall the viewers getting any indication of that aside from that Hawkeye and Trapper liked him. But I never believed that Henry could run a camp (we were to assume, I suppose, that Radar did everything).
Potter made much more sense as CO because we actually saw him making decisions, and there was the interesting twist of him being career Army and yet Hawkeye and everyone still respecting him. Even had McLean Stevenson stayed I don't see what character development could have been done.

Yeah, Henry really could've become a better CO if they developed him. Maybe they could say this was his first time as an actual CO, hence all the worries, and then have him develop those leadership strengths.
He did prove smart in the OR once in a while. Like when they ran out of sutures so he had Margaret sterilize the thread his wife sent him to use that. That was good creativity and with more moments like that, he could've been awesome.
The one character I did hate, though they never really did to much wrong, was Klinger. It was annoying to watch his antics and I often thought to myself, "You know, Klinger, you're not the only one who wants to be at home right now. And yet, you're the only one that can't be an adult about this." I warmed up to Klinger in the later years, after the dresses, but that was only enough so that I wasn't hating him.

Since this is the place for off topic, I'd just like to mention that today would have been my great aunt Val's 86th birthday and I wanted to honor her memory! She was more like a sister and I miss her terribly.
This was a woman who could pin a line of matchsticks along a clothesline and light them by shooing them with a .22.
Seriously.
Nobody messed with Val! :)
JenButterfly- 09-17-2007
*holds moment of silence for Val*
That's cool that she was a good shoot. Did she hunt?
extra_cat- 09-17-2007
She did when she was younger, but quit. She was never the type to hunt just to kill an animal. Her mother, brothers, sisters, neighbors, whoever ate whatever she got.
JenButterfly- 09-17-2007
Well I'm glad you have fond memories of her.

At The Other Place, Klinger giving up drag is considered a jump the shark moment. I'm with you that I prefer him after he gave it up, though there were some funny moments (Klinger in the catfight with the girls at the whorehouse over his wardrobe will never not be funny).
I do like the moments where Klinger was allowed to be genuine, like when he was truly despondent over his wife dumping him. And I love the ep "Follies of the Living, Concerns of the Dead" which hinged on Klinger (he had the fever that allowed us to see the dead soldier).
Speaking of Klinger reminds me how I was never that fond of Margaret. One of the Klinger focused episodes was "The Red White Blues" (I'm looking these titles up on Wiki, BTW, lest you think I know them offhand!) where Klinger has a reaction to Primaquine (malaria preventative). Everyone thinks he's faking but Margaret in particular I remember being such a bitch!

I never liked post-drag Klinger. Klinger was a one dimensional character and he couldn't pull it off.
Anyone remember AfterMASH - urghh!
...
Sorry about your grannie EC.
JenButterfly- 09-18-2007
You know what? Early Margaret bothered me, but "I'm Married" Margaret bothered me more. She wanted Frank to cheat on his wife for her, but suddenly she had all these values about fidelity. Please. I did like her post-Donald though. She was more reasonable then, but still quite the bitch. It was only enough of a like for me not to get irritated with her.
But let's be fair. She did have one or two of her moments.
And I agree with you, Sheeperoos, Klinger was rather one dimensional.
What was AfterMASH? I'm so young, I only watched MASH on reruns so I don't remember stuff like AfterMASH.
DIY Sheep- 09-18-2007
You don't want to know what AfterMASH was. All I remember was that it was cod awful and everyone wore flares and had bad sideburns.
Reruns! MASH plays every afternoon in Chaseland. I have no idea when the original series was actually filmed.

I officially have no life - I do have Google, though, and MASH was filmed at the Fox Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains area of California.
Silja- 09-18-2007
...is there such a thing as good sideburns?
Sheep, while you're here: How's the whole election thing going? Last I heard, Labour were ahead of the, ehm, not-really-fascists by quite a few points. Dare we hope Howard will be history soon?
JenButterfly- 09-18-2007
There is MASH reruns going on because it's their 30th aniversary since the series began, I think....Well that was TV lands excuse for running the 30th aniversary get-together thing. i'm not sure what the real reason is though.
Hallmark chanel shows episodes everyday. Unfortuneatly I'm usually in school when they run. :(
