Oh great, that J&R site has made him realize we need a new digital camera and a Nintendo DS . He will definitely have free time in the first few days, it's only one evening of work, and the rest is all play.
This was all decided way before the credit crunch, of course...

It sounds like he's going to have a great time and I'm totally jealous. (Which is sad, cuz I only live a short plane ride from NYC, but no travel for me.) The only thing I don't understand is--why on earth would he want to go see the Yankees? The Yankees are evil! Now, if he was going to see the Indians I could totally understand...or the Red Sox--the Red Sox are awesome...but the Yankees?!?
(Note: My personal bias might be leaking into this comment ever so slightly. But I don't think so. I think it has more to do with how evil the Yankees are.)

OMG! RSH, we are going to come to blows! I am from a hardcore Yankees family! (Now me, I don't care for baseball, but I have to defend the family sports honor)!
That said, the very first major league game I attended was Indians vs. Yanks in Cleveland. I brought home a Cleveland hat to piss off the family (it worked) and I still have it. :-)
radiosweetheart- 04-15-2009
NOOOOO!!!! IT CAN NOT BE!!
How can we be friends when you are rooting for the enemy!
fffaw- 04-15-2009
We may have to reassess this friendship. :-(
Sports, sports will tear us apart again... WAH!
radiosweetheart- 04-15-2009
As if my day wasn't bad enough! I've lost another friend to sports rivalry.
Next yr gonna tell me you like the Steelers over the Browns, aren't you?
Woe. Woe is totally me, y'all.

Hey, no fighting over this. His work picked this game, so we're not to blame.
But I have to say that the Yankees probably are the team that is best known in non-baseball playing Europe.
radiosweetheart- 04-16-2009
We'll hold off on the sports rivalries, especially since it's not his fault. I am incapable of liking the Yankees, tho. There's only 2 types of people in the world--those who like the Yankees and those who hate them with a fiery passion.
I grew up near Cleveland, tho, so despite the inevitable outcome of every season, I have much love for the Indians.

Count me as a third type. Not a big baseball fan, but I like the Mets. If the Mets can't win the series (and, let's face it, they can't), I'd like it to be the other local team -- The Yankees. But, if it doesn't happen, that's okay too.
And I think I've discouraged Mr. Jonne from shopping too much in NYC by PMing Jonne about our 8.375% sales tax.

Thank you! I've been trying to get this through to my Evil Empire hating husband for years now.
I'll be going to my first Major League game next Sunday. Cardinals-Cubs. We couldn't have picked a better weekend to go visit St. Louis if we tried.
Chipmunk_love- 04-16-2009
Ooh, Cardinals-Cubs. That's always a crazy game. I used to live in a part of Illinois that seemed split about 60-40 towards the Cardinals (oh, silly rural parts). Now, that's a rivalry.

It's been ages since I've been to NYK, but I was wondering if visitors still need to be warned that it's not a good idea to stroll around the area surrounding Yankee Stadium. Get in. Get out. Take care.
Poeia- 04-16-2009
Not quite as bad as it once was, but I wouldn't hang out there. And there's no reason to do so. You drive, park in the stadium's lot, see the game, leave or you take the subway directly to the stadium and take the subway back.
jonne- 04-16-2009
I have been going to baseball games since I was 10, which is quite rare overhere, and I have explained the rules to him. So he will probably be the only one in his group of about 50 Europeans who understands about force play and infield fly. I'm so proud :D .

I'm trying to quit smoking and I got these stop smoking nicotine lozenges from the store. I wouldn't advise using them because I think I'm just addicted to them now (I've gone through like half the box already,) and a box is like 40 dollars, while a pack of cigarettes is like 4. Sucking on a lozenge doesn't look as cool as smoking either. If you do decided to use them, don't start your first one up right before you start a 12 hour shift at work because it makes you feel like you've smoked 40 cigarettes back to back. I was all light headed and sick.
