407, Congratulations! (and the right subject too - hee, I did business economics & law here at Chicago).

Congrats 407! The wait is always the hardest, and now that it's over, take a moment to celebrate.
I had no clue about the earthquake at all. Wow. I looked over at NY Times and they were still reporting the same numbers as TrooperCam mentioned earlier. CNN has an almost identical wording, so it must be through the AP.
As for Minnesota, they have found some remains in the Mississippi. Unfortunately, the article then goes into replacing the bridge rather than the people involved.

So between us we could have a right punch-up at the Boat Race. And pinch a few helmets.
Does that sound terribly rude or is it just me
Haven't been to the Boat Race for years. Though now I live right on the river I see eights going past my window every Sunday. Just think, we could've seen HL in the boat race if we'd been around at the right time. :ship:
Do I recall that HL grew up in Oxford before going to Cambridge? Fearfully nice of him to have connections to both if so!
407- 08-16-2007
hwshipper - Hugh does have connections to both. I have neither, I just prefer Oxford's Law courses.
The nearest river to me is the Thames. I sincerly doubt that anyone would want to do any kind of boat racing in that. Ick.
AZ - Thanks! Is it wrong that I'm not really celebrating? I'm sleepy, lol.
zaara - thanks :D
TLTW - Immigrating sounds fun. There is that small problem of me not being able to function in anything less than a major city (another OxBridge turn off - way too small). LSE is Central London and about 40 minutes away from home. Considering my inability to cook and general laziness, I have a feeling that I'll be travelling back here quite often with laundry/an empty stomach/a need for money. Heh. Besides, heat! As much as I complain, without the rain and the cold I would feel lost, hee.
And Silja, I have no idea how tall Stephen was. People were leaning against me, pushing me forward. All I remember is waving my little notepad around obnoxiously. I swear, if I were a celebrity, I would hate to run into someone like me :sweatdrop:

I went to Western Kentucky. A school so southern and so backwater it gets name checked in at least 3 songs about the good old days
Try telling everyone you graduated from Cow College (aka MS State Univ). I'm so proud....

A nap is a fine way to celebrate if you ask me.

I would have thought "Cow College" would be the U of Wisconsin. My college just has a beer named after it (Point Special Lager).

Yeah, I tried to watch the news and couldn't do it. In one ten minute block they had:
--news on the earthquake
-- news on two hurricanes
--trapped miners
--the stock market is way, way down
--news on finding bodies in the Mississippi.
About then I had to turn it off.

Oh same river here. People do row on the Thames - I live on the Isle of Dogs & there's a rowing club just down the road. And of course the Boat Race does take place on the Thames too - but a long way up the other way (Mortlake to Putney or thereabouts).
Cambridge is of course just a village in the Fens ( ) but Oxford always felt like a real city to me - its got suburbs n'everything - I'm a Londoner born & bred, and have only ever lived in London & Oxford. Quite happily in both!
407- 08-16-2007
People do row on the Thames
Again, ick.
Do you know, knife crime has gone up by so much in London that they've devloped 'stab-proof coats'? Hey, in London's defence, I've lived here my whole life and I only know 4 people who've been shanked :huh?:
Silja- 08-16-2007

I’m a frightfully rude person
Do I recall that HL grew up in Oxford before going to Cambridge? Fearfully nice of him to have connections to both if so!
Well, he's a frightfully nice person – and yet, he chose the little village in the Fens (I can’t believe I’m perpetuating the infamous Oxbridge rivalry  ). Well, I grew up in Oxford (in the seventies -- do the math  ) so I sincerely sympathise.
407, don’t be hard on yourself. I’m not a celebrity but I’m sure I wouldn’t mind running into you.
ETA: Am I right in saying that there is such a thing as stab-proof school uniforms? I didn't think I heard it right, but all things considered...
TrooperCam- 08-16-2007
I've lived here my whole life and I only know 4 people who've been shanked
Not counting myself I know umm...let's see...ummm..nope got no one.
--news on the earthquake
-- news on two hurricanes

That's pretty depressing. If you turn on teh news now you will hear about the dude being found guilty of planning a terrorist attack
or you can turn on ESPN and gag yourself on all the Vick coverage.
407- 08-16-2007
Man, in the UK today, the headline was about A Level results. The stock market news was pretty far into it (complete with the phrase "America sneezes and we catch the cold").
That's all pretty depressing.
I'm watching Resignation right now and they all have weird, really deep voices for some reason. Heh.
radiosweetheart- 08-16-2007
That's why I'm all NPR all the time. None of that messy sensationalism, just Carl Kasell going on and on and on and on about...I don't even know half the time. He could be telling me my entire family was abducted by aliens and there's a meteor headed straight for my living room and I'd continue drinking coffee and getting ready for work.
hwshipper- 08-16-2007
I can’t believe I’m perpetuating the infamous Oxbridge rivalry
Uh, me neither! Some of my best friends went to Cambridge (though I do tell them they do punt from the wrong end of the boat). (And that comment has no double meaning whatsoever)
Hey, in London's defence, I've lived here my whole life and I only know 4 people who've been shanked
Eek, you're kidding! Gulp... I tell myself it all happens south of the river...

Funny thing said at soccer camp today.
HTR!Team: *discussing 7th Harry Potter book*
Coach Chris: I heard that Harry and Ron hook up.
HTR!Team: *laugh*
Emani: Would be funny if that happened.
Me: Yeah. I know! Ginny and Hermione go and raise Hippogriffs(sp?) together in Poland, and Malfoy learns to tame Manticores. Harry and Ron's kid gets run over by the Hogwarts Express!
HTR!Team: *laugh*
Me: If their kid gets run over by the Hogwarts Express...I wonder if they have civli unions in England?
...It was funny at the time.
