I can't even remember who won in 2006. I just remember that it was *not* Brokeback.
Crash.
So criminal that it won over Brokeback Mountain.
I still have a enormous amount of hate for Titanic winning over LA Confidential. I really really hated Titanic and the surrounding hype. And I hate James Cameron. Hate.
Crash!!!!!
My first thought was, "I think that Cronenberg film came out in the early nineties."
Then I realized that you meant the other Crash. The overrated, manipulative mess directed by Paul Haggis.

Yep, that one. I still think Scientology was behind that win ;)

WORD. I was devastated. Brokeback Mountain is my favorite movie. And for me it was a no-brainer. Crash just came out of nowhere. I actually liked it, but it did-it was THE outsider of the year.
Hey Folks,
Tonight we'll be using this thread as a 'real time' thread during the Academy Awards. Join us! Comment on who has the most horrendous dress! Squee over George Clooney! Cringe at the orchestra cutting in on the Acceptance speeches! Debate over who got the loudest applause during the 'In Memoriam' segment! Good times!
Yay for real time thread.
I'm rooting for Kevin O'Connell. Sound mixer, 20th nomination, never won.
He's the Susan Lucci of the Oscars!
ok, tv guide tells me that Baba Wawa is interviewing: Miley Cyrus, Harrison Ford, Ellen Page and Vanessa Williams.
GG, you emailed her, suggesting Miley Cyrus, didn't you? LOL! Well, she's not as far gone as Larry King, at least.
Blanchett won the Independent Spirit Award yesterday (dedicated it to Ledger) for I'm Not There, so she won't go home empty handed this year. She's very pregnant, though, so I hope they seat her close to the Oscar podium, just in case she gets Supporting or (undeservedly) wins for Elizabeth. I think Christie might take it, by virtue of her age. What a shame - Cotillard, Page, and Linney were all very fine. This category almost deserves a tie this year.
Kind of off-topic, but not - the Indie awards were strange, as usual - I enjoy the jeans-and-sweaters outfits and the free-wheeling way things go. The Oscars are so stilted, I just wait for something unexpected to happen, to break the monotony. The Indies started with a surrealistic sequence of Rainn Wilson as Dennis Hopper's "bitch", highlighted by Dustin Hoffman's very funny Best Feature Presenter segment, and ended with Savages winner Philip Seymour Hoffman and Wilson fighting, rolling on the floor among the tables. Hoffman won, BTW, ending by spanking Wilson mercilessly before the cheering stars. Oscar could sure use something bizarre, but hilarious, like that. But tonight, I think Bardem will beat Hoffman for Supporting Oscar. No Country, please, no.
There was much sadness and love for Ledger, especially since I'm Not There took the Robert Altman Award too. Count me as another one who was rooting for Brokeback. Crash was a train wreck, IMO. Juno did well at ISA, bagging Best Feature, Best First Screenplay (Oh, Diablo - so weird) and Best Female Lead. Angelina Jolie was not able to hide her disappointment when Ellen Page beat her out. So I'm glad she's not up for an Oscar.
The Oscar for Male Lead is a tough one too, this year. Mortensen deserves the recognition and I just love the guy's gentility, looks, and acting chops, but I'm not feeling a win for him. Though I haven't seen Sweeney Todd yet, and I love Depp's quirky, absolutely fearless choices, I think Day-Lewis will take it. I wouldn't feel cheated if it works out that way. I finally saw There Will Be Blood. The movie felt somehow like a mini-series, so no love there for Best Picture, but Day-Lewis was all there and all over it.
GG, I didn't hate Titanic, mainly because the subject matter is so close to my heart, but I'll join you on the LA Confidential bleachers. I have a feeling Atonement will be Best Picture. No Titanic, but I'd take a Juno win better somehow. Oddly, I don't have a strong favorite for Best Pic this year. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is only up for Director, and there's no chance it will win, IMO. At least Schnabel got the Indie, though. (Juno's Reitman lost to him, but he might get the Oscar, over Schnabel and the Coens.)
Footnote: Colin Firth presented at ISA, and you Firth-o-philes will be happy to hear he's holding up pretty well. LOL!
And I also say YAY! for real time thread!

Who me?? Never

We seem to be disagreeing a bit today, but I'm with you 100% here.

It seems like those two films are always compared for the '06 awards. I definitely agree that BM is better, but I think that both of those films are overrated, and I would have preferred to see Syriana, A History of Violence, The Squid and the Whale, or even The New World receive nominations in the best picture category.
I was very disappointed that Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg weren't nominated that year. I've been a big Cronenberg fan since high school. Actually, I could probably say that I've been a Cronenberg fan since childhood. The exploding head from Scanners was definitely a formative cinematic experience for me.
I also really wanted David Straithairn to win for Good night and Good Luck. He's such an underrated actor.
David Strathairn was amazing in GN, GL. I loved that movie so much. I think all 4 of the other nominees probably would have won in any other year than this one. It was pretty clear from the beginning of the award season that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was going to win(also a great movie).
I think that Joaquin Phoenix might have deserved the win the most, after all he did all his own singing in Walk the Line ;)
10 years later, I'm still bitter that none of the men of LA Confidential got nominated.
I'm watching E! for the red carpet. They just did a "quiz" as to whose back that is and they showed the back of Hilary Swank's backless dress. My sister and b-i-l were at an Oscar party that year and when her dress was shown one of the guys said "Well, we know she doesn't have a tattoo."
