I don't think the writing is all there is to House. Far from it. It's the "what" and I agree with Hugh Laurie when he says what is important, what is interesting is the "how." I get that the "how" is his job, but any lesser actor portraying House would likely play it on the nose and be so unlikeable no one would watch. A plot summary doesn't come near telling why the show is so compelling. It's Hugh's performance that illuminates the whole thing and makes House fascinating and intriguing. I think some of the layers are in the writing, in the situations he's put into, and don't get me wrong, I do think a lot of the writing on House is stellar, but a what involves me the most is in his expression, his eyes, his reactions and when how he responds reveal a deeper, more complicated, more hidden person than the others around him in his life ever see. And even when they do glimpse it, they don't quite get what his efforts cost him. House is an outsider by nature and it's both his strength and his tragedy. Without a performance of the caliber that Hugh Laurie gives so consistently, we wouldn't care about this oddball genius so much: we would have moved on by now.

Sometimes I think they should have portrayed House as an asexual, much like The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper or BBC's Sherlock...what do you think?

Poeia- 03-13-2011

Sometimes I think they should have portrayed House as an asexual, much like The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper or BBC's Sherlock...what do you think? They would have had to get another actor to play him. He might have been able to pull it of for an episode or two, but one thing HL is NOT is asexual.

Sometimes I think they should have portrayed House as an asexual, much like The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper or BBC's Sherlock...what do you think? Interesting thought, but that doesn't work for me. Maybe that's because I'm now used to him as he's been portrayed, but no, I just don't see it. I guess I could see him being a little less romantic, but not much. Sigh, but then, according to the writers, he's not a romantic. Guess I just keep imagining him falling in love with these women. ETA: And also what Poeia said.

I've invented a challenge, simply because I'm bored and don't want to work. It's called "I'M Tired of Waking Up on the Floor: OR 17 Times House Ended up on the Ground" Let's see if this group can list ALL the times House has been punched, kicked, tripped, drugged, passed out, or otherwise ended up on the floor (not counting the times he lies there on purpose). I've counted 17, but there may well be more. I'll start us off: Season One 1. Detox: He gets punched by the patient's father. 2. Hunting (SEason One??): He gets punched by the patient's father (though he doesn't actually end up on the ground.) 3. Honeymoon: He tries to walk "normally" and falls.

Poeia- 04-13-2011

I'll add the "on purpose" ones: Occam's Razor - sitting on the floor of the pharmacy, looking at all the colchicine. DNR - lying on the floor, listening to John Henry's music Hunting - lying on the floor with Stacy, waiting for Steve McQueen to get caught Failure to Communicate - sitting on the floor of the airport terminal, bouncing the stolen ball, while doing the DDX Distractions (2) - lying under the table during the DDX and sleeping on his office floor Sleeping Dogs Lie - sleeping on floor when Wilson comes in to show him the article Who's Your Daddy - sitting on the floor with the box that has the morphine Que Sera Sera - sitting on the floor of the jail cell One Day, One Room - trips the guy with the cockroach in his ear and kneels on him Airborne - doing a spinal tap on the floor of the plane Help Me - most of the episode is on the ground Bombshells - while singing Come On, Get Happy Not on purpose: Sex Kills - kneed in groin Safe - Wilson saws through the cane No Reason (2) - falls down when he gets shot; passes out when he tears his stitches Merry Little Christmas - passed out when Wilson finds him 97 Seconds - electrocutes himself House's Head - on floor of bus during the accident Birthmarks - Cuddy drugs House The Greater Good - tripwire So that's 9 more of the "not on purpose" ones.

I am bored with my paperwork, too. I'll take Season Two. Safe : Wilson saws his cane. He falls. Sex kills : Greg Grunberg's character knees him hard in the groin. He falls. No Reason : Moriarty shoots him. He falls. He gets up from ICU, tears his stitches, collapses on the floor. Hey, twice in one ep! Do I get a prize? That makes seven. Next?

Not On Purpose -- drugged by 13 (and possibly more) for testing in "You Don't Want To Know."

zumi- 04-13-2011

Not on purpose: S3"Family" - adorable Hector chewed his cane S6"The Tyrant" - slipped on a wet floor at the neighbour's doorway, in Wilson's apartment S6"Moving the chains" infamous Lucas' tricks: 1. the grip rail fell, in the bathroom (well, not on the floor, in the bathtub, and naked. this counts?) 2. Lucas stuck his leg, in the cafeteria

It's a wonder he never broke a bone....The man knows how to fall.

One is pretty subtle, but if you look at my original post, and the fact that he doesn"t ALWAYS end up on the floor, it will help you figure it out.

Getting close! We're up to 15. Still 3 more that I can think of (so a total of 18.) One is pretty subtle, but if you look at my original post, and the fact that he doesn"t ALWAYS end up on the floor, it will help you figure it out. Don't know if this falls into what you're looking for, but House was on the floor at least three times in Broken, once laying on a mattress on the floor of the isolation room, once when he was punching Alvie, and once when he was kneeling next to Freedom Master's wheelchair as he was trying to "fix" him. Also, from "Son of Coma Guy", him sitting in the hallway outside the dad's motel room. Also, also, from "Carrot or Stick" House training Rachel on the floor of Wilson's office and then later sitting with Cuddy on the floor of Rachel's room

Cuddyclothes- 04-14-2011

Also, he fell in the isolation tub when they tried to get him out in "House's Head." Does that count?

maineac- 04-15-2011

Also, he fell in the isolation tub when they tried to get him out in "House's Head." Does that count? This counts--and it's one I hadn't thought of. So now we're up to 16. STill at least three more out there. Riverflow22, yours would come under the category of "on purpose".
