I think it's unusual for an American to not have a middle name. So I think that both John and Greg have a middle name.
Neither my sister nor myself have middle names. I've also had a couple friends who have no middle names.
I think it's possible that House has no middle name, and it's presently the theory I go with, mostly because we've seen no evidence of one for him anywhere (especially with what Namaste mentioned, how House's name is read in court). But it's something I'd love to learn for sure one way or the other from the show.

Although I love my middle name, my last name combines with a lot of vowels to make a new word. It like, if my name were Poeia Helen Ell, using a middle initial would make it Poeia H. Ell and, unless I want to go through life having people calling me the equivalent of Poeia Hell, I don't use my middle initial.
I agree that John is a likely middle name for House and it would even explain why he doesn't use it at all -- he hated his father. (I've also thought that a kid born in 1959 in a military family might have Dwight as a middle name.)

Anecdotal evidence is not evidence; you and your friends do not represent a large sampling of the population.
And regardless of all that, I think you were born significantly later than the 1959, when Greg House was born? Back then, it was rare to not give a child a middle name. (And I argue that it still is rare to not give a child a middle name.)
And now I officially drop out of this conversation, because it is becoming absurd. And I say that with all the love in the world.

Maybe there will one day be a reveal ala the Simpsons where Homer discovers that his name isn't Homer J. Simpson, it's Homer Jay Simpson.
Namaste- 11-20-2008
I'm not trying to be absurd or rankle anyone's feathers. I don't really care much if his middle name is John or Igor or he has none. I just find it interesting that the show has gone out of its way to give Wilson a middle name, and not House.
And I think it just isn't something that's occurred to them, that's all. It never occurred to me until someone brought it up in the episode thread, and since that wasn't the right place to continue the discussion, I brought it up here.
ETA: I just wandered over to ff.net and saw this summary:
Man Found Dead in Hospital's Clinic Exam Room" Under Investigation. Prime Subject: Dr. Gregory C. House
C? Now where the hell did that come from?

I kind of hope he has some really embarrassing, doesn't want to ever tell anyone, weird as heck middle name. :)
Like 'Sunshine' hehehe.
Or Wilbur or Delbert (I had a great uncle named Delbert!) or Vivien or Humperdink.
Or a play on names: Gregory Hertz House, lol.

To echo Namaste, I wasn't trying to ruffle feathers, either. I also wasn't trying to say that since I and people I know don't have middle names, that House must not have a middle name. I'm not saying it's not rare, because you're right, NightOwl; it is rare not to have a middle name. I was just saying it's possible, and, even though it's rare, not everyone is given a middle name. It really doesn't matter much, but it would be cool to learn if House has one and, if so, what it is, just because I love learning little canon facts like that.
Travlncarrie, that would be hilarious! Moonbeam. Or something. Or the name of some great war hero that his dad admired. Who knows.

Dr. Gregory C. House
Colin. It's absoutely got to be Colin. ;-)

I'm putting my money on it being Gregory John, but with every hope in the world that in the very last episode we hear his mother snap at him, "GREGORY ELIZABETH HOUSE!"

Somebody called for a Dutch boardmember?
Yes, it would be common here to have more than one name, both for John and for Gregory. We only use one name though, the others are only used as initials and on passports and such.
I do believe that it was John's mother who was Dutch, rather than Blythe's. John is the English version of Jan (from Johannes) whereas I can not think of anything resembling Blythe. Not that is really conclusive, but I also think it would be more logical for House to use his father's mother in his story in One Day One Room.

You didn't "rankle my feathers." (Thanks for comparing me to a hen, by the way.)
I didn't say that the topic of discussion (House's middle name) is absurd; I said that the discussion is becoming absurd. I also then added a light-hearted comment ("I say that with all the love in the world"—a callback to a Wilson quote), complete with smiley face and everything, to make it clear to everyone that my tone was light-hearted rather then annoyed or pissy. I'm not sure why it wasn't clear.

How about "Out" as a middle name? :P Or "Brick"? Or "Cat"?
Just in the unusual idea at the time category: An elderly relative of mine (born in the 1910s) was named "RQ" by his parents. Just "RQ," no middle name, and the letters didn't stand for anything. Until he was inducted into the US Army. The Army didn't cotton to having two letters for a name, so they renamed him Robert Quincy.

I agree that John's is probably the Dutch side of the family. First, because House likes his mother so I doubt he'd blame her parents for the abuse. It's not that he'd mind doing it if he thought about it (dead, no afterlife, etc.) but, on the spur of the moment, he'd probably associate it with his father's family.
Also, Dutch, like German, would have a lot of names which could be Anglicized into "House."
Of course, Blythe's family could be Dutch and John's family could be Enlish/Dutch/German, etc., but I think it's less likely.
deelaundry- 11-21-2008
My personal fanon is that "House" is the shortened form of another name, given to the family at Ellis Island.

On second thought, if not "Colin" then "Hot". That is all.
