Although unlike House's previous surgery, for cataract surgery, you're awake. My grandmother thought it was the coolest thing ever for that very reason.
Oh! I apologize, I didn't know. Maybe he'd go for it then. I'd hate to be the surgeon though, with House awake to criticize  !

House told her she might get cataracts as a result of the radiation, not that he has them.
I went to my eye doctor a couple of weeks ago. I have them in both eyes. They're still very small and off to the side so they don't effect my vision at all. His prediction is that one will need surgery in about 3 years, the other in 10+. 10 years ago, when my father and my aunt each had theirs fixed, it was still an hour-long procedure. Now, apparently it's 10 minutes and you don't have to go to work the next day if you don't want to -- but you could.

Right. House doesn't have cataracts, just the normal change in vision for eyeglasses. (I was actually disappointed they didn't mention the glasses in the "Half-Wit" commentary. Have any of the show runners brought up the decision to have him start using them? And why no fic on the subject?)
As to cataract surgery, absolutely. It's an outpatient procedure. They numb the eye with drops, keep it forced open and slice and dice. But it's not just the procedure itself. You have to start using antibiotic eyedrops a week before the procedure, then continue for four weeks after, up to four times a day, in a very set pattern. (One drop, wait 15 minutes, another drop, wait 15 minutes, etc.) My 83-year-old mother had her cataracts done this spring, and since she has problems with her meds, my brother, his wife, my niece or myself were over there four times a day to administer them. And you do the eyes three to four weeks apart, timing wise. Do the math on the number of visits my mother had. Of course now she can tell the difference between the dark blue puzzle pieces and the black ones, so ... yay!

So I want ask a question: Is House depressed?
Whoa, this feels like deja vu but, in short: no.
In long, he has a number of depression-like traits and is far from a normal, well-adjusted, balanced, happy person and he certainly has plenty of reasons to be depressed--so many it's kind of a monument to his non-depression that he actually does get out of bed everyday--but in terms of clinical depression of the type or degree that requires therapy (including anti-depressant meds) or depression being the answer to "what's wrong with House": my answer is no. Two reasons: 1.) he doesn't seem depressed to me  ; 2.) Wilson thinks he is so obviously he isn't. We've been set up to consider a number of explanations for why House is the miserable bastard he is: infarction, betrayal, disability and constant pain; loss of the love of his life; addiction to vicodin; hates his father/childhood abuse--now it's depression. It seems to me that we were pretty much told that while all these things may exacerbate the situation and give his assitude a certain quality all its own, none of them really explains or accounts for who House is. I don't think the question of why House is exactly the person he is will ever be answered and I think it's best that way.
When there are entire conferences devoted to the collegial academic study of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this doesn't surprise me. And actually, it doesn't bother me either. Textual analysis of popular culture is academically relevant, especially because in today's world, television programs are probably more culturally universal than most current books, poems, and movies.

I agree.
Also noteworthy, though not at all surprising, that a student with an above average interest in writing about Ayn Rand would also have an above average interest in writing about Greg House.
Objectivism vs. Housism.....Go!

Two professors from Middle Tennesse State University started it about seven or eight years ago. They run a online professional paper community and offerred one year a summer program on BTVS and Angel.
On Topic- I was reading a story about Angor Wat in Cambodia and remembered the giant Mekong Delta catfish line and it makes me smile everytime.

I'm not sure this is the right place for this... one of my fav threads at the Other Place was the 'props and wardrobe' thread. I couldn't find anything similar here. If you all think it was popular enough, maybe one could be opened here as well?
long ramble about House's t-shirts moved to the newly created props and wardrobe thread.
I'm so sorry guys, that I keep messing this up. It's like the fourth time now. I didn't see the Dean's to do list thread. How many warnings and suspensions do you think I would have by now at you know where?
saara_zaara- 09-22-2007
to21be, you're right - we don't have a thread for props & I suspect it will be important this season
I'll talk to this subforum's mod about getting it set up, but also fyi, if you have other suggestions/comments in the future, this is a good thread to post in the Dean's to do list
