Thanks marykir, for posting the J and W ad. Of course, now I have to watch a whole bunch of eps on youtube. Just watched a scene with him in the tub. Love the tub scenes. Knees! who knew knees could be so hot?? http://mx.youtube.com/watch?v=igGNNTr_JXg (around 4:13)

Speaking of dorky glasses - does anyone know when they appeared? They seem to be a new thing - and seemed to appear around the time of the glasses in House.

I didn't even know he needed correction. I assume he wears contacts and pops the glasses on now and then.

I have an idea. I know that there are people who are doing the quilt thing to show their appreciation to HL. I have friends that when a Red Sox player is doing crummy, they send a postcard shower, where a whole bunch of people send postcards of cheer and goodwill, basically. Maybe we could do that for HL? Show him, that his fans are behind him and whatnot. I can't tell with all of the articles that came up in my google alerts this morning, which are crap, and which are real, but they all tell the same old story.... I just thought it might be a nice gesture . . . anyone have any thoughts?

I didn't even know he needed correction. I assume he wears contacts and pops the glasses on now and then. I assumed that as well. And given he was flying he might have wanted to relax and nap on the flight, and with the dry air can kill your contacts.....hence the glasses. Otherwise IMO, not a very good disguise, that hat really stands out!

Honestly, as a bystander to previous "let's send Hugh stuff!" drives, if you're doing it just because it'll make you feel good to do it and you're not looking to get a pat on the back or a thank you then go for it. I mean, obviously it probably wouldn't be a good idea to send him a bunch of "hope you get over your depression soon!" cards, but little notes about your appreciation for his work and such would probably be nice, imo. It's just that I've seen other boards, back in the second season of "House" when Hugh's popularity here pretty much exploded, find themselves bitter and grumpy when they didn't get any acknowledgement from Hugh. As long as you're not looking to be his BFF then I don't see what harm it would do. But, that's just the opinion of someone who, in spite of embracing the joys of fandom, has only written one fan letter in her life (like, 13 years ago) and doesn't participate in these kinds of things in the first place.

I'm not looking for recognition, just trying to be a nice person . . . .and I normally don't do things like this either . . . . but while I like lame, maybe this is too lame?

As David St. Hubbins so beautifully put it:It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever. Which I am quoting simply because I think this board needs more Spinal Tap references. Not because I have anything against the idea of sending Hugh Laurie post cards.

Well, I think the problem is that while the papers are all fixated on one thing, no one really knows why Hugh went home. For all we know, he's really as happy as a clam---or whatever that means on Hugh's personal scale---so inundated him with a bunch of "get well soon" type cards might be not only counter productive but baffling as well. Then again, like Amysusanne, I've only done the stick-something-in-the-mail-for-a-celebrity once and that was, yeah, 12 years ago. It paid off nicely for me, but circumstances were different.

For all we know, he's really as happy as a clam---or whatever that means on Hugh's personal scale---so inundated him with a bunch of "get well soon" type cards might be not only counter productive but baffling as well. Exactly. That's what I was trying to get at (very poorly) with the comment about just telling him you appreciate his work. I mean, people have done the "fan project" thing before when there weren't tabloid stories about how miserable Hugh is (or whatever this week's tabloids will bring), but who knows how happy or sad or indifferent he was in real life then? I think if someone really wants to undertake some "let's put a scrapbook together for Hugh" endeavor then doing it from the perspective of someone who enjoys his work rather than the perspective of someone who just read some sad newspaper articles about him would be the way to go. And if he never sees the letters, so what? It makes you feel good that you wrote it. Frankly, I've always thought he was probably the kind of guy who was baffled about that sort of fan interaction (i.e., fans sending him huge group projects for his birthday and things like that), so happy as a clam or holed up in a corner weeping, I've always thought the reaction to them would be about the same. But, that's me (probably) projecting. Then again, like Amysusanne, I've only done the stick-something-in-the-mail-for-a-celebrity once and that was, yeah, 12 years ago. It paid off nicely for me, but circumstances were different. Ditto. And my guy was about 1% as famous as Hugh was back when I wrote the letter, much less now. I've just never been the type to write fan letters, but I try not to be condescending to those who are. I tend to be more self involved when it comes to being a fangirl. I do things for me and kind of shy away from actual interaction with the object of my fangirlishness (fangirliness?).

Sorry to be so random but does anyone remember the clip that was linked to a long time ago where Hugh was being interviewed by someone and when the next guest came on Hugh couldn't stop laughing? I went over to the HL thread at twop and searched around but couldn't find it...and I can't for the life of me remember who the second guest was that had him rolling. I'm dying to watch that clip again though. Little help? Oooh and something else...was the interview that went along with that ever found? Is it the "Hugh as God" one?

misere- 11-01-2007

Do you mean the Margarita Pracatan on Clive James clip? I don't think that the actual interview was ever found.

sugarplum_pdx- 11-01-2007

I have to agree with amysusanne and bailey about the postcard/gift idea. There's nothing wrong with sending fan letters, and I'm sure he appreciates the sentiment. But it shouldn't be done in connection with whatever he went home for last weekend. We still have received absolutely no public information about what the reason was, other than a family matter. If it was something bad, I think it would just make him feel worse to know that it had been publicized enough to prompt a fan reaction. It might just make him feel embarrassed and uncomfortable (because lord knows he seems to find plenty of reasons to feel that way as it is!).

Misere, thank you so much for posting that clip! Hugh looked terrific, and with the current climate of nonsense going around it was just awesome to see him laughing so hard. If I had only known that singing off key with a terrible Spanish accent would amuse him so much I'd have hustled right out to LA to entertain him.
