I was at the ITAS taping, Hugh was nowhere near that bad. At first he didn't turn to watch a couple of the clips, (they were being projected behind him) but he could clearly hear them. He drank some water during them or just kept his head down. But he did turn during at least two or three of the clips to watch some (the first one of those was w/ he & RSL). There were no fingers in his ears or singing to himself.
Not even one line of "London Bridge"???? *g*
It probably has more to do with the fact that he was sitting in front of an audience for the Actor's Studio interview. When he's not the focus of attention (no camera, just sitting in the audience) he can much more visibly "tune out."
That makes sense...couldn't do that with tons of people watching him but could totally do that with only the people at and around his table taking any notice. Of course I wonder if all the teasing by RSL...cause you know it's gotta be happening...was really worth it!

Look - I keep apologising for the quality of Australian journalism. Some of it is just awful.
But it does look like we may never know why he went back home - c'est la vie. I'm with Hughego - it's a puzzle, but we'll have to wait for the biography.

I don't think the original Australian article was the problem. I think it's the crappy American journalism that's implying Hugh went home because he was depressed.

Whatever! Bitch!
Like...whatev.
Really as a fan of the show, I am now curious about puzzles and things that are interesting. The show made me this way, so I should'nt be yelled at for wanting to know, or any of us for that matter. This doesn't make me a bad person.
I LEARNED IT BY WATCHING YOU!!
(this outburst has been made possible by the partnership for a drug free america. thank you.)

I sort of wonder if doesn't just depend on the setting, but also the situation and whatever his state of mind is at the time. I mean, we've heard stories before, just like the one RSL tells, about Hugh plugging his ears and retreating for a minute until it's over. It seems that Jay or Craig made mention of it on one of his first appearances on their show and we'd heard it for years prior to that from his friends and colleagues. At the same time, obviously, in certain settings such as the ITAS taping, he didn't make a scene about it, but he still distracted himself more often than not. The most obvious time he's just looked like he'd rather be dead than sitting there watching a clip of himself was on Ellen's show where I think he was the most uncomfortable I've ever seen him. Maybe there are just certain things that set him off and certain places that make it easier or harder. And now that I've reread that last statement, I realize that I'm hardly saying anything at all. I should get into politics...

A friend sent me the same article from People.
If the problem were depression, I fail to see how spending 48 hours in England (plus another 24 hours in transit) would alleviate it.
If flying for 24 hours and a 48 hour visit with family were all that was required to treat a depressive episode, the airway would be more crowded than it already is. And the pharmaceutical industry would surely spend billions to squash this sure fire cure. No, I doubt this is the reason for HL's sudden trip home, too.
Personally, spending 48 hours with my family would make me nearly suicidal - but that's another story.
On another note, I just stumbled on Charlie Laurie's MySpace page which seems to have been abandoned early in 2006. Some of the posts there are quite amusing. Am I just really far behind all you HL gurus in finding this curious item? If so, I'll just slink away and return to my designated lurker stool off there in the corner. Prepared to be humbled - please be gentle.

Charlie Laurie - as in a mini Laurie?

With pleasure. The son is blessed with Dad's wry sense of humor....at least in the opening bits.

drill down into the supporting pages - esp. the "do not support Edies campaign" bit.
iamdaffodils- 10-30-2007
SarahWoolfe - welcome from lurkdom! Thanks for the posting the link. Not sure if it's legit since I know a lot of those myspace pages are fake, but it's interesting if it is. Love his dad being God thing!

It's not real. The language in the bio is bizarre to say the least. 'I go to Eton College'?!
DIY Sheep- 10-30-2007
Am I missing something? It is actually called Eton College - and has been for several hundred years.
Poeia- 10-30-2007
I wonder if it is his or just someone pretending to be him. The only entries -- the "about me" blurb and "Edie's campaign" are about his dad and what 18 year old would talk about nothing but his father on their myspace page?
marykir- 10-30-2007
I think we've been through this discussion before and come to the conclusion it's fake. Not here, because here didn't exist. But somewhere, probably when the page was first created.
Silja- 10-30-2007
No Sheep, you're not missing anything. I was explaning myself very well. It's called Eton College, but I can't imagine an Etonian using the phrase. 'College' has a different meaning in every day use.
Edited because I'm very good at making not a lot of sense.
hugeegosorry- 10-30-2007
It's 100% fake.
All the details are wrong.
And do some research, he says his hometown is Oxford, but the Lauries live in North London.
