DOB1234- 12-14-2008

This SNL was a treat. It had me laughing out loud multiple times. The only thing that fell completely flat for me was the cookie-meeting sketch. Loved the lamps, because it was just so bizarre. I kept waiting for some point to it but there apparently wasn't one. Loved the fighting family Christmas dinner. Hugh's Christmas medley was fun and I loved that they had him sing several times during the show. Overall I thought Hugh looked much more relaxed than last year. Looked like he was having fun. The man can act up a storm, but it's nice to see that he's still a comic. :D (Kanye? He was pretty poor. Get that man a bucket.) ETA: Oh yes, the cat sketch definitely made me think of Mr. Burmie.

I missed the first half hour :( Stupidly fell asleep and woke up in the middle of the Christmas dinner sketch. I liked the lamp sketch...made me literally laugh out loud, it was so absurd. I liked everything I saw (except Kanye West). Didn't realize Poehler was leaving the show, okay granted I don't exactly watch it, but still. So anyone know where I can see the first half hour? If it is ok to send rapidshare links on this site, I can send you the links and you can download the whole show.

LJ has the interstitial titles up (celery, rug, mountie, etc.) and they are fine. Very fine. I think my heart skipped a beat. So wonderful. They flash so fast on the tv, it's nice to be able to stare and take in all his hotness. I'm so happy I laughed at last night's episode. I was so nervous for him. I'm actually looking forward to watching it again!

Anyone keeping up with Stephen's twitter? He's heading to LA and he is twittering 38,000 feet up in the air. Amazing. Wonder if Christmas is at the Laurie's in LA this year?

TJRX- 12-14-2008

After rewatching I can give it very high marks, even the lamp sketch. There has to be some surreal, off the wall sketch, no? Hope we hear more about the after party from Stephen or someone else. Now Hugh can relax and enjoy his holiday. I'm so impressed that he even does SNL. He certainly could use a break from rehearsing and performing. And while he probably enjoys the change from playing House, he has said many times that it is completely nerve wracking for him to be in front of an audience on live television. So the fact that he pushes himself to do it is an extra treat for us.

If it is ok to send rapidshare links on this site, I can send you the links and you can download the whole show. Please don't post that on the forum - it's a violation of copyright. If you want to share links via PM, of course, there is nothing we can do to stop you. ;-)

The full show is going to be on the hughlaurie LJ comm very shortly; I'm on 70% on the upload.

The already famous lampsketch can be found on YouTube... I doubt it's going to be there for long. NBC doesn't like having their shows on YouTube. Something about copyright ;)

I'm sorry if I offended people with my poorly worded remark. I appreciate the apology. You have to be careful with those sorts of comments. I honestly think that I read more UK than American authors in school. Dickens, Shakespeare, Hardy, etc. figured heavily. I got Hugh's joke, I just didn't think it was funny. I mean, possibly obscure to some, but still a limp joke at best and about the musical to boot anyhow. YMMV. I must be in the minority, but the show fell pretty flat for me. There were some good moments (Hugh cracking up during Bronx Beat was adorable). To me, it was just so so. There were a few fun moments though. IMHO, they haven't utilized Hugh well either time he's hosted. Kanye was a complete dud and I hated the David Patterson bit. And so I don't come off as a complete bummer naysayer evil person, I thought the interstitals were HOT. ;-)

I doubt it's going to be there for long. NBC doesn't like having their shows on YouTube. Something about copyright The bright side is that it made it up there in the first place, so that means they actually have to send their minions out to find it and have it reported and removed. It's puzzling to me what NBC chooses to totally cockblock from youtube and what they let through. Surely there's an actual explanation for how it works, but it baffles me. I tried to upload a segment from Conan and had it rejected at confirmation for copyright. I uploaded a similar segment from another episode of Conan and it went through. I don't think NBC really *cares* about segments like that because they don't appear to remove them, so I wonder what it was in that video that kicked it back out. Very weird. All that appears to be on hulu at this time, wrt what Hugh was actually a part of, is the wedding speech and the digital short. I'm kind of surprised the lamps weren't up there. We'll no doubt never see anything that involved music that wasn't written by SNL up there, so half the show will only live on in the underground. Speaking as a huge lover of old style musicals, I'm very well aware of Oliver! and even owned the movie soundtrack album at one time. But it never was top tier a la South Pacific, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, etal from what I can see. Then we see very different things, I suppose.

I must be in the minority, but the show fell pretty flat for me. There were some good moments (Hugh cracking up during Bronx Beat was adorable). I didn't like it either. Maybe it's because I'm not American - I just don't get SNL. At all. I think I laughed twice. :? Hugh was adorable though.

fffaw- 12-14-2008

Maybe it's because I'm not American - I just don't get SNL. Well, I am American and I didn't like it either. ;-) I just think that SNL didn't bring their A game last night and that bums me out.

Poeia- 12-14-2008

I'm with you on the David Patterson but, fiddy. I'm sure there are many things about the man to make fun of, but the one they chose is the fact that he's blind. I though Hugh was actually superfluous in the Bronx Beat skit (although I did like his cracking up.) I didn't like the cat sketch at all -- other than the fact that it involved a cat, I didn't see a resemblance to the wonderful Mr. Burmie. I think my favorites were the sarcastic family and the 3-second medley of Christmas tunes. ETA: Someone has posted a few episodes of Saturday Night Fry on YouTube. It's a radio show so there's just a still picture for the video. I think Hugh's in #1 & #3.

amysusanne- 12-14-2008

Someone upthread mentioned something about hearing more from the afterparty. Beyond Stephen's twitter account, at least. Usually pap footage of arrivals is posted on youtube, but I've also seen quite a number of infotainment sites covering Amy's departure last night, so there's a small possibility, if nothing huge happens today or Monday morning, that a blurb about SNL could make the shows Monday night.

euphrosyna- 12-14-2008

It's up on LJ now if anyone wants it - locked post though.
