I remember it too, AmySuzanne. He said that he loves playing music with his kids and they're like the Partridge Family, all playing together in the living room. He'd love his wife to sing, but said that would never happen.

Yes! A little British Patridge Family.
It's funny that I could remember more about how excited everyone was that Hugh was actually being mentioned in a magazine and less about the actual content. Though I do seem to remember something about a clarinet.

I don't think Hugh is still with Band From TV. If you read the About Us write-up on their website, there is no mention of him as a band member.
This is who is listed:
The Band From TV lineup includes a powerhouse of well-known and acclaimed actors including: Greg Grunberg (drums), a veteran of shows such as Alias and Felicity and currently starring in the NBC hit HEROES; Teri Hatcher (vocals) currently starring in the ABC hit DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, James Denton (guitar), currently starring in the ABC hit DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES; Bob Guiney (vocals), who appeared on THE BACHELOR and is currently seen on TLC's DATE MY HOUSE; Bonnie Somerville (vocals), starring in ABC's new fall series CASHMERE MAFIA; Jesse Spencer (violin) currently starring in the FOX hit HOUSE; and rounding out the band are accomplished musicians Chris Kelley, Barry Sarna, Jon Sarna, Chris Mostert and child-star turned bass player Brad Savage.
No mention of Hugh.
He is at the bottom of the Meet the Band column and is part of the promotion for the new CD/DVD because he was part of the band when they were compiling it, but at best, I think he is now a guest performer.
I'm pretty sure in the German interviews posted on the Media thread that Hugh corrected the interviewer when she said "Now, that your family is with you in L.A." He said they weren't, but everyone is doing a lot of traveling and piling up the air miles. So, apparently, all those August news reports of their move were wrong.

He is not a regular with BFTV anymore. They took him off their web site months ago. Apparently he may sometimes make a surprise appearance with them, as he did recently, and it does make sense really to put him into the ads for the DVD because he is on the DVD.
As to the family, who knows. He clearly doesn't want us to know, which is his right. It does seem that he's bought a house in LA and that his wife is sometimes with him, from the recent burglary stories, but we don't know anything else for sure except that he most certainly won't tell us anything about it. Perhaps we should put Lucas on his trail.

Hugh seems to do what he can to preserve his family's privacy. When he accepted the Golden Globes, he thanked Jo by name. In every other interview I've seen, he refers to her as "my wife" and the kids are "my sons" and "my daughter."
Charlie, who was apparently the one most opposed to relocating, has started college. He's at Columbia in New York City. That coincided with Hugh buying a house (ooops - I capitalized "house") in Los Angeles and there have been reports that the rest of the family is moving to LA. If asked, Hugh might at some point confirm that his family has moved, but he certainly doesn't have to.
As far as BFTV is concerned, Hugh is once again listed on their website as a member. That might be because he is featured on the CD & DVD. It might also mean that he will be performing with them at some future events. He said on The Tonight Show that he hasn't been performing with them much because he doesn't have time to go to the rehearsals and he hates faking it in performances, figuring out what the song is just as it's ending. If his family is based here and he isn't flying back to London every time he has a long weekend, he might make a few more rehearsals and, as a result, do a few gigs with them. As they don't announce who will be at any performance in advance, we'll find out when they do a few shows in southern California and he does or doesn't perform.

Was that ever confirmed? It was mentioned in the same DM article that said they were moving, but I never saw it stated anywhere else. Just wondering because a friend of mine almost went there and might be transferring and I just think it's cool.

Probably not. But he has graduated from Eton so any objections he may have had are a bit moot now.
peggy06- 10-03-2008
Now that the family is with him, he might be able to spend more time with the band. Maybe his sons will play with the band! Jo can sing back up. That would be cool.
Recall that Parade quote a few years ago where he implied that while his children were all musical, his wife was kind of "oh, hell no" at the idea of singing with the "band". {g}
I sure wish I could quote that blurb (it was one of those dumbass answers to the dumbass questions in the front each week) but it's been several years and if it doesn't show up on the first page of google I just stop looking.
eta: edited to remove clutter. a couple of times.
Q: Who is that handsome actor, Hugh Laurie, on Fox's new House? A little insight, please.
A: He's a married Englishman who like to play New Orleans jazz till all hours with his kids, ages 11 to 16. With Laurie, 45, on guitar or piano, one son on sax, another on drums, and a daughter on clarinet, they're a regular Partridge Family. "Nauseating, isn't it?" Laurie jokes. "I've been trying to get my wife to sing, but that's not going to happen." -- USA Weekend, January 23, 2005

According to the (admittedly, Daily Mail) information we got last month, he's at Columbia, not Scotland.
ETA: And God forbid he help us all out by updating his network information on Facebook. Still just listed as Eton '07.

That's lovely, Peggy. Thank you! I hadn't seen that little blurb the first time 'round. No wonder he misses his family so much.

That information was false. He's not at Columbia. He's at Uni in Scotland.

Can I ask you how do you know this information? Is there any way to prove it?
Just asking. Don't mind me.

Funny about that DM article, I actually thought it was true because it was the first time I read an article from them that seemed fair and balanced. Gone was the usual dominant themes of "Hugh is bald and depressed". Go figure. It was a total lie except for buying the house. It makes you wonder how they come up with this crap and why bother writing about something that is so blatantly false.

I remember reading that and thinking how cute is that? Music filling the Laurie household.

There was also a mention of the Charlie at Columbia story in a small article in The Insider here but I suppose they just picked up the story from TDM. As for blatantly false stories, remember the one a year or so ago about Hugh rescuing Borat from a violent New Yorker? When asked about it, HL said it was completely made up. These tabloids make up stories just to stick a mention of a popular celeb into their rags. If a celeb lives a quiet life and won't talk to the tabs (and who would want to except for Hollywood wannabes?) they have to invent their material.
