I'm sure I'm probably in the minority, but I swear as much as I love Hugh and Stephen, you could not pay me to sit through Chariots of Fire again. I remember going to see it in the theater after it won the Oscar for Best Picture, and I was just flabbergasted that this was what won. I was never so bored at a movie, until about 15 years later when I went to see The English Patient, which coincidentally had also won Best Picture. I could totally relate to that episode of Seinfeld about Elaine's similar feelings towards it.

Poeia, the bloke I heard the story from, a cousin incidentally, was a student at Trinity at the time and a member of ADC. They were 'imported' as extras, which is why I'm sure there could have been people from Footlights there as well. I could phone him and ask but it's the middle of the night here  ...and anyway, I'm off to bed. ETA (because I can't seem to shut up): You'd need to strap me to a Vogon Poetry Appreciation Chair to make me sit through Chariots. I did rather like The English Patient though.

I'm sure I'm probably in the minority i really doubt that. i would rather have dental surgery.

OK, I'm very very silly and I rented CofF and have spent the last half hour looking at the sequence mentioned in EW. THere are any number of people who might be HL or SF. I took some screenshots and circled the ones that I thought might be HL (on the right) and a couple that might be SF (on the left). And another one with a glimpse of someone HL-like. You'd have to download the screenshots to see it at all, but those two seemed to be moving like HL and SF. But they are way in the back and you really can't tell. Anyway, nothing definitive and only for the truly obsessive. Otherwise, move along... (And, as obsessive as I clearly am, I'm not watching the whole movie.)

You amused me, Boffle. Probably more than the movie would have, based on what y'all have had to say about it. Thank you for your diligent dedication to the cause.

I've noticed that HL's helmet doesn't have a full face shield, unlike the one that House wears. How can people ride around on bikes without that shield? Don't they wind up with a face full of bugs, not to mention the occasional rocks thrown up off the road which I suspect can do a lot of damage. They sure can damage a windshield. they wear sunglasses.

Chariots of Fire was released in 1981 which means it was filmed that year or the year before. Hugh and Stephen graduated from university in 1980 or 1981. So he wasn't hanging out at Eton at that time. Stephen didn't go to Eton. I don't believe Kenneth Branagh went to university at all. But it makes a nice story. the fact that you know all this is really impressive! I don't think anything could make me watch that movie. Unless Hugh starred in it.

Poeia- 10-13-2007

I love Chariots of Fire. One of my favorite movies ever. ETA: And I've had a thing for Nigel Havers ever since. (And he was on A Bit of Fry and Laurie, celebrating Hugh's death in S1, so it all ties together.)

Thanks for saying that Poeia, I'm in complete agreement. Saw it when it first came out and have watched in quite a few times since. Still like it as well now as when I saw it first.

They sure can damage a windshield. they wear sunglasses. There have been any number of photos of Hugh's almost instantly recognizable face zipping around LA on his Triumph motorcycle - with helmet sans face shield. Seems odd to me that he, who values his privacy, wouldn't use a face shield and be 10 times more anonymous and sail past the photographers. I mean, being 6'2", built like a God and on a British Triumph in LA should be enough of a tell for the truly avid fan - but come on, without the face shield it's almost no contest. Unless a face shield is unbearably hot in LA??

As someone who lives in Florida and has ridden motorcycles, I can tell you that in the heat, face shields can indeed be suffocating. Almost all my motorcyclist friends were avid helmet-wearers but very few had face shields. They all wore good sunglasses for eye protection. As for protection from various flying objects and insects ... we never seemed to have much of a problem, and I don't imagine Hugh does either.

The director was saying they were students at cambridge, not eton. They shot it at eton and it was supposed to be a stand in for Cambridge so they were students "there" (cambridge) and wanted to be in the movie. It took me a few minutes to get that too, when i read it in my EW on friday... well not my EW, I steal my neighbors and then put it back before she gets home from work... hehehehe *evil laugh* Edited to remove mysterious quote tag

Those candid pics remind me of how guys just latch on to their favorite tees. He has that "thunder road" tee on, which we've all seen on him so often. Its so cute. He'll prolly keep wearing it till it falls apart in the wash.

I posted this on the media thread, but in case everyone doesn't read there, if you're interested in getting The House That Hugh Laurie Built book - it's now in stock at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc.
