Also, his accent really has softened. It's subtle, but it's definitely got an American tint to it. It does sound like it, doesn't it? Wah, I don't want him to lose his British accent.

Sort of relating to our ideas of what is attractive (and also related to HL), I've read a few interesting studies about how sense of humor might be mostly a sexually selected trait, rather than, say, only important in just general social relations. So - in case everyone else is not as nerdy as me - that means that men (seems to be only men, in humans) who are 'funnier' get more matings and leave more offspring and the genes for 'humor' - whatever those are - get passed on. Probably the best evidence that humor may be sexually selected is a recent study that shows women rated men with a sense of humor as 'attractive', while men didn't find humorous women attractive ( ) - instead, their choices were based mostly on physical characteristics. As an aside, women also find intelligence to be an attractive quality in potential mates. Anyway, I find this interesting for a couple of reasons. First, in most creatures, sexual selection tends to work mostly on males just due to biological differences in reproduction, etc., and the process tends to produce 'flashy' characteristics: big tails, bright colors, antlers. But, in humans, people generally think of women as being more 'flashy', so I like to think that we women are still exerting some selection on our mates, even if not all of the traits we like are visual. Second, I think this is where we get some of the differences in 'beauty' standards for men and women. If you asked guys to post pictures of female celebs they find attractive, you'll rarely get older, attractive women or women who are more known for comedy. But often the opposite is true if you ask women to do the same thing: plenty of older men, lots of comedians, etc. Of course, you get the pretty boys :D but you also get a lot more variety. I've seen these types of lists on a number of websites and HL always comes up in threads of women-chosen pics. Interestingly, he also almost always appears in threads where men post pics of 'dudes you'd go gay for'. Of course, there's the whole issue of differences in attraction preferences for gay men and for straight men imagining how they'd choose a male partner, but whatever :? Wow, officially longest post ever by me on this forum.

Blue, ITA - I know that for me, at least, I almost always go for guys that can make me laugh.

I don't want him to lose his British accent To keep this terrible thing from happening, I guess he will have to spend much more time in the act of love

To keep this terrible thing from happening, I guess he will have to spend much more time in the act of love Right. Good idea. I guess there will soon be a long line snaking its way through West Hollywood. Anything to save Hugh's accent.

Also, his accent really has softened. It's subtle, but it's definitely got an American tint to it. I thought I noticed that but I wasn't quite sure. To me, his American accent has a slightly nasal quality to it. So I thought, "Either his British accent is softening or he has allergies." :D

Also, his accent really has softened. It's subtle, but it's definitely got an American tint to it. I noticed that too. I really hope it wont change significantly. HL without a British accent is not HL. Stephen should join the cast for S4 and keep the accent in-line. And I didn't say anything about The Act Of Love.

Regarding Hugh's Leno appearance, I got a distinct vibe that Jay and Hugh seemed a lot more comfortable with each other. I wonder if they have spent any time together off set, perhaps in Jay's garage looking at his cars and motorcycles....Plus when he claimed that the screen behind the couch on the Tonight Show set was taken from Hugh's place, it sounded like he had actually seen Hugh's before... Am I reaching for too much subtext? :?

Coming in late to say the interview was awesome and that suit looked incredible. There's something about Hugh in a three piecer that really really works for me... And I don't know why but I'm not noticing a difference in his accent. My ears might have been a little clogged on Friday night though so maybe that's why...but I remember my friend laughing and saying "oh he still sounds so British" when he said the name of Bonnie Sommerville's new show. I think it was the way he said "mafia" that she thought was really British. *shrug* I don't think he's losing his accent...but I'm not a good judge. I'll have to force myself to watch an old interview and then the Leno one right after to compare. That's the kind of research I like to do...

I don't notice any lessoning of the accent, either. Then again, I don't hear a speech impediment that many others do, so what do I know? But one thing I'm sure of is the fact that I don't think Hugh is going to be morphing into American dialect any time soon. Once your language patterns are set, you're unlikely to shake them, especially when you're in your 40's.

I think it was the way he said "mafia" that she thought was really British. It occurred to me while watching that Bonnie's show is getting some of the best word of mouth promotion as a result of being in a band with three guys who pimp each others' work at every turn. Having your new show (which is already getting the late fall roll out and, if the other new shows are hits out of the gate could completely get lost in the crowd) mentioned by Hugh, Jamie and Greg everytime they talk about who all is in the band can't hurt it!

His a's in particular. The speech impediment thing is something that I never noticed either, though.

Once your language patterns are set, you're unlikely to shake them, especially when you're in your 40's. Oh, I don't know. Everytime I go to Ireland for a few weeks I come home with a bit of a lilt. This disappears after a day or two, but I can see how several years in the States could take the edge off. And 407-- I am an American and I thought I noticed it on Leno, too.

407- 09-24-2007

And 407-- I am an American and I thought I noticed it on Leno, too. Hee, you're much more in tune with other accents than I am then. All accents that aren't English tend to sound entirely the same to me. Even the worst impressions of American accents sound word perfect to me - eek!
