1. I know that everyone has problems with the server on occasion, but I've been taking it personally today. It's all about me today. The server hates me. 2. I edited my previous post before there were any responses because I felt it was a little windy and incomprehensible at the end, but I think that maybe that was part of what was being responded to. If so, I'm adding back in a more concise version of that ending. If not, oops. Actually, if not, that's right in line with the way my whole day has gone. I'm two beats off from everyone else in the world. Anyway... I've got to chime in with a defense of Leno. He's no Dick Cavett, for sure, but who on mainstream TV is these days? <snip>Even the headline guest only gets two short segments separated by a commercial, and then it's over. I agree with this totally. Maybe that's sort of sad, really, but it's come down to it being nothing more than product. It's also come down to it being overly saturated in a way. There was a time not too long ago when television could only support two late night shows. People tried repeatedly and failed. Now we've somehow managed to get five on network television, all sorts of syndicated shows, multiple daytime shows that cater to celebs and any number of cable outings. It's not really special anymore to see your favorite celeb on television because you'll see them on twelve different shows in the week telling the same story each time. The bright side is that you get to see them twelve different times in a week. Another bright side is that there are bright sides. Regis might suck in the morning, but you can turn up one channel and see David Boreanaz cooking with Martha Stewart. The View might be painful, but there's always Ellen a couple of channels over who, while a terrible interviewer, brings a different feeling to daytime TV. So, some things are fun, but by design they're never going to give us anything in depth even if they're capable of it. Case in point: Oprah's certainly capable of it, but when was the last time you saw anything particularly insightful on her show. It's been awhile for me. I guess the basic, "I'm here to promote something and nothing more" format does make the occasional interesting and fun moment more special. But, that was just gasbagging. What I was initially saying was... In Leno's favor, he does seem at ease with Hugh and vice-versa. I agree with this. My earlier comment was that I don't think either of them look uncomfortable with one another at all and I don't think Hugh ever really looks like he's wishing he were somewhere else. Certainly no more so than in other interviews. I got to go to a taping once upon a time and have had friends who went to others and Hugh and Jay were chatty during the first break while Hugh and the second guest were chatty during the last interview break. During the musical guest he was tuned into them and at least giving off the appearance that he was engaged in the moment. I'm not going to pretend that I know his deep dark thoughts on appearing on Leno (though I hope he doesn't waste time thinking about it; that's my job), but on the surface he doesn't appear to be going through hell at the time. I must say, too, that Leno is far, far more intelligent than he appears on his show. That's the really watered-down Leno you see there, intentionally made middling to have the broadest appeal with the least controversy. Frankly, I'm impressed that he's managed to have the kind of mass appeal that he has. As a person, I like him a lot and have a lot of respect for him. As a comedian "back in the day" I thought he was very funny. I'm not a huge fan of his show, but it's just not my taste these days. That's not to say that he doesn't make me laugh on occasion because he definitely does, but it's just not what I'm into. I'm glad to hear that you've had good experiences speaking with him, though. I saw him once stop his car to talk to someone who wanted to meet him, so he couldn't possibly be all bad, anyway...

I was under the impression that there's some sort of approved list of questions & topics for these things. Plus they'll emphasize House vs J&W or BA partly because the number of folks who saw that was so small in comparison & the networks want their current projects plugged. I realize that. But even if they didn't mention his earlier work, I'd expect Letterman to know who Hugh is. amysusanne, the server hates all of us. And I hate it right back. ETA: And if you're going to include Regis, The View, etc. then, "back in the day" there was Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Virginia xxx (I've gone up on her name right now), etc.

Even if I was up late enough to be able to watch, I simply can't stomach Leno. Not even for Hugh. Now Conan, that's a whole new ballgame, I'm such a Conan fangirl and really hope that Hugh will go to his show soon.

Letterman, yeah you'd think he'd know who HL is regardless of anything else. I've not seen that interview, but the mind slightly boggles. Re the server, I posted a status update with some hints on how to cope. I keep telling myself things are getting better, the server didn't actually crash this time. This is a step forward (the service techs, on the other hand, almost certainly hate me).

Poor Hugh. It looks like Vanity Fair already grabbed his title "The Man in the Irony Mask" for use. But in this case it's good; a cool profile of Stephen Colbert.

Didn't GQ actually use "the man in the ironic mask" for their article about Hugh however many years ago? Or am I just making shit up again?

Didn't GQ actually use "the man in the ironic mask" for their article about Hugh however many years ago? Or am I just making shit up again? Oh, fer fuck's sake. Did I ask you for a research project? No? And yet you gave me one anyway? :-) Are you talking about the GQ article with the rather attractive black turtleneck? It's times like this where I feel confident that I'm the only fan that really appreciates those two episodes where House wore a turtleneck. I want more turtlenecks. And speaking of lost articles....about 9 years ago I packed up a bunch of magazines for safe keeping and dumped them off at my mom's house for safekeeping when I moved across the country. Included in that--I could have sworn---was the (I want to say Empire, but now I can't even remember) article on Stephen Fry where the headline is something to the effect of "Is this the funniest guy in the UK?" It's got a pull-out photo with Stephen seemingly wearing a suit but also wearing boxer shorts and flippers. For some reason, I was interested in re-reading this and bringing it into my Seattle enclave now that I'm no longer moving every 6-12 months. But it appears that magazine has been lost. I'm quite distraught about that. Not that that has anything to do with anything. Is it Tuesday yet?

It's times like this where I feel confident that I'm the only fan that really appreciates those two episodes where House wore a turtleneck. I want more turtlenecks. HL looked uber-hot in those turtlenecks, so I certainly appreciated them, but I can understand why they chose not to use them any more. They made House look a bit too put together, professional, polished. It's hard to look rumpled and devil-may-care in a turtleneck.

amysusanne- 09-21-2007

Oh, fer fuck's sake. Did I ask you for a research project? No? And yet you gave me one anyway? Heh. I enjoyed that. Are you talking about the GQ article with the rather attractive black turtleneck? That very, very, very attractive turtleneck. It's times like this where I feel confident that I'm the only fan that really appreciates those two episodes where House wore a turtleneck. I want more turtlenecks. I agree with misere that they made House look a little together, but that didn't stop me from enjoying them. Particularly at the end of DIYD. And speaking of lost articles....about 9 years ago I packed up a bunch of magazines for safe keeping and dumped them off at my mom's house for safekeeping when I moved across the country. Included in that--I could have sworn---was the (I want to say Empire, but now I can't even remember) article on Stephen Fry where the headline is something to the effect of "Is this the funniest guy in the UK?" Oh, gosh. I know that magazine. But, I don't think it's Empire. I can *see* it, though. This is not in any way Hugh, House or even Stephen related, but my great magazine tragedy is the loss of about ten lovingly cherished issues of Sassy. Keanu and Alex Winter on the cover, Kurt and Courtney on the cover, Mayim Bialik on the cover...they're gone. Gone, gone, gone and I mourn them several times a year.

What's with all the Jay hate? He's not that bad. He's a perfectly serviceable talk show host. Do I tune in to watch him? Ah, no. I do love the headlines though. I think his interviews with Hugh are fine. I think the last one he did had a lot of good stuff in it. The whole "falling asleep on motorcycle" thing. Oh Hugh looks hot as hell! wearing what kind of looks like a tux with no tie. Yeah, a nice black suit. And he just looks dapper as hell. Wonder how he got tennis elbow??

Poeia- 09-21-2007

And Hugh is wearing a 3-piece suit (drool) and talking about Band from TV.

sasmom- 09-21-2007

and he has tennis elbow!

olivia720- 09-21-2007

Ryan Gosling's bringin back the three piece suit!!

olivia720- 09-21-2007

Love how he says the women at award shows are scary. So cute. Now Jay's having sherri shepard on, that total moron from the view. OMG what a great interview! Lots of cute stuff. Yeah, some of it I knew already but always nice to see him. In the back of my mind I'm like "Shut up and let him talk about his dating/love life!!" Hugh's stayin for the second guest! yay!!
