Jo is Jewish? I had no idea. Wonder if she practices at all. Wonder how they raise the kids.
Now it makes more sense about his mom "not accepting" Jo. Prolly was the jewish thing.
Stephen has jewish heritage but I don't think he has much to do with it as an active religion.

Hugh's referred to his parents not really accepting his relationship with Jo.
Did he say that they had a problem with the relationship itself and how it unfolded or specifically with her? I got the impression that they were most unhappy that Charlie (?) was born out of wedlock.

He said his mother had the problem, not the father.
His mother was upset about "The circumstances surrounding the birth of my son" or something like that.
I thought it was about having a kid out of wedlock, but the Jewishness prolly had something to do with it.

I actually wondered about whether Jo was Jewish after Hugh had spoken about the problem with his mom re: Jo. Her name is a bit "of the clan" and I wondered if she wasn't Jewish. Actually Stephen is probably (from what I've read of his own writings on the matter) a "cultural" Jew. Not a religious or observant one. He has strong feelings on the Holocaust and antisemitism, and has spoken/written on these issues.

First he said that his mother did not approve of the marriage. Then he said she didn't approve of the circumstance surrounding the birth of his son, so it sounds to me as though his mother had a problem with both.
Too bad. It does sound as though his relationship with his Dad remained good.

Excellent interview with Stephen - so brilliant! :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OownvVjs6lE&mode=related&search=
Be sure to watch all 3 parts! Part 2 has brief comments about Hugh. Part 3 has a fascinating discussion of America, British and American politics.
I would love to sit and listen to this man for hours, days and years! He makes me realizes how little I know  , but still not make me feel stupid! :D
P.S. Remember - Hugh is on Leno tomorrow night!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting that, in a country that is only 0.5% Jewish, HL's best friend is half-Jewish and his wife is Jewish. (Just another reason to like him -- in addition to the 8 zillion so far.)

Thanks for posting the links to the Stephen interview, Houserocket.
So Stephen's journey across America is due to begin in October, then. Very cool. I'll keep a lookout for him in Seattle. I wonder if he'll ever be publishing an itinerary of where he is at any given time.
And I keep seeing links to his massively worded blog but always get an error when I try to get there. Could it be that his server was just over bombarded by people clammoring for a tome about smart phones?

What are they like? Do they visit...in Israel?
I've found out they are related to Jo only lately (and screamed my head off), and now slowly but surly getting to know all of them, just to be sure I'll be invited to all the major family events, in case.....
I know HL and Jo visited here a few times, before House.

Hi, Jouse,
Want to adopt me?

I am blown away by Stephen's technical knowledge. I had no idea he knew/cared so much about gadgets. Wow he is quite verbose in his blog. I read quite a bit of it, but gave up after a few eons. scrolled through the rest. I think he spent more time pondering iphones (or whatever) than the people who make them. Holy crap! He takes that seriously!

Goldderby is running a poll to see who was robbed of an Emmy this year. :x Hugh is one of the choices. Check it out.
HereMod Note: Fixed the link so the page wasn't wonky

Stephen inherited Douglas Adam's legacy and loves technology.
Also, I hear through the grape vine, Hugh had issues with his mum.

I'm trying not to get on my high horse or my soapbox here (or both at the same time - that would be a mess) but this idea that Mrs. Laurie had a problem with her daughter-in-law being Jewish is...(and she tried hard to find a word that wouldn't offend)...silly – it's certainly not the woman I remember. She was of a different generation is all. She was a very proper lady of the upper middle class who appreciated good manners and maintaining tradition. I suspect she merely had a problem with her daughter-in-law not actually being her daughter-in-law. Ultimately, it's not any of my business anyway. Mrs. Laurie has been dead for many years. I vote we let her stay that way.
...and now I'll tiptoe away and let the shouting begin *ducks*

Being of that generation in England (and in America for that matter as well), and of her social class, polite antisemitism was incredibly common. I'm not saying it to be derogatory of HL's mom, just a social comment on the times. Lots of Jews in that era and before either changed their names or joined the Church of England altogether to fit into the professional classes. That Hugh fell in love with a Jewish girl must've been concerning to his parents, given the times.
Anyway, I agree that it was long ago, and she's long dead, so I'll drop it. But it did make sense to me as student of Jewish History. Just as Stephen's own religious heritage was a (as I'd read somewhere) difficult issue for his family socially.
