I know most of the stuff on this list is old news, but I remember over at the other place awhile back someone asking whether Stephen was Hugh's best man at his wedding and no one was sure. According to this, he was.

TVG loves those Desperate Housewives.
Everyone loves the DH, and everyone else from ABC apparently. The TV season hasn't even officially started and I'm already sick of certain shows, just because they're on the infotainment shows all the time.
We moan a lot about how little coverage Hugh and House seem to get, but at least the non-fanatics won't be sick of seeing him :)

OMG that pic of Hugh and Olivia is so suggestive! She's got bedroom eyes and her strap down. I'm jealous. She seems to appreciate Hugh and know how great he is (judging by her fox interview) so at least she's worthy and knows how lucky she is to be his co-star.
(referring to that link posted in the media thread, in case you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about!)

Well, to be fair, I knew 9 out of those 10 things.
I mean, I had no clue that Stephen detested illogical use of the word "energy" but other than that, I'm pretty sure all of those points have been written about quite a bit.
ETA: Going on pure speculation about the Laurie family dynamics (which I'm loathe to do, but what the hey)----lots of people have their friends, and not family, be godfather/mother to their children. I can't imagine being upset if my brother's kids had godparents other than me. After all....I'm their aunt and that's close enough. But I suspect the whole godfather/mother thing is particularly nice when A.) the person in question IS your best friend and B.) the person in question is unlikely to have children of their own.

So Stephen is godfather to all three of Hugh's kids. Wonder if that ever bothered Hugh's brother? He has at least one, right? Maybe they're not that close.
saara_zaara- 09-19-2007
olivia, it doesn't necessarily follow that Stephen is the only godfather the kids have. Assuming the family is CofE, the tradition is two godparents of the kids sex & one of the opposite, but frequently folks have two of each nowadays.

I don't know about the family, but I think Hugh is an Atheist as is Stephen. Hugh mentioned being an Atheist in Clive Anderson's God show, and Stephen has talked about being an Atheist several times.

Religious beliefs and religious tradition don't always go hand in hand. You can have one without the other. That doesn't mean I have any idea what sorts of traditions the Laurie family follow, but many people follow traditions that stem from certain relgions without being immersed in the more religious or spiritual side of things.

If I recall, during the ITAS interview Hugh said his family was Scottish Presbyterian (which is where the guilt comes from). But he has accepted (I seem to remember the words "resigned himself to) the fact that there is no God. Of course, Jo's religious background could be something entirely different. The kids do have 2 parents.
Olivia, he's the youngest of 4. 2 sisters (born while their father was in the foreign service), his brother then Hugh. Hugh is 6 years younger than he brother, the shepherding lawyer, and I think they are not especially close.

That musician Hugh mentioned in the TV Guide interview -- James Hunter -- sounds like Sam Cooke. Well, like Sam Cooke sounded 50 years ago. This shows excellent taste on Hugh's part as far as I'm concerned. I am inspired to locate my Soul Stirrers CDs.

I'm pretty sure that was a joke. Like, "here I am on a show about me being god and I'm an atheist, haha".
On ITAS he didn't "flat out" say he was an atheist. But he certainly isn't religious.

Jo's Jewish, and I know her family in Israel
What are they like? Do they visit...in Israel?
saara_zaara- 09-20-2007
The whole having godparents thing in the UK is very much a cultural thing, separate from how devout one is, even if that's where the tradition comes from, so it doesn't surprise me that HL's kids have godparents & lucky them that its SF.
I make that statement so my next one is on topic  Mr Fry has begun blogging.

Jo's Jewish, and I know her family in Israel
I had no idea. Hugh's referred to his parents not really accepting his relationship with Jo. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? And Stephen's Jewish. That much I do know.
Would also explain why hugh's so good at Yiddish expressions.
What part of Israel is her family from? I got lots and lots of family there, since before it was even Israel.
