. They don't want to hear him point out that he's not actually pissed off and on the verge of tears in photographs and when he does they would rather ignore it in favor of the next TDM article. Amysuzanne, you were right about waiting for the full article and I slap my hands for posting before reading. I thought the oddest thing about the article was that the reporter actually asked HL about the state of his marriage because of rumours that as far as I know only happen in TDM and are based on innuendo about his facial expressions, when they can tear themselves away from his bald sp--er--Arthur. Surely TDM celeb gossip is not regarded as actual news?? On the PC front, I think words do have the power to hurt and are not divorced from hurtful actions, as I think Stephen would admit if pressed. However, HL was clearly not using the word to hurt and was referring to himself, so I would agree with the poster who suggested he might want to look for less loaded slang, but there's nothing here worth a fuss.

I can think of about 15 times today where that happened to me. And I am fairly sure I also used the word retarded. And I am a teacher, I should technically know better. But then again I called someone a freak today too...... Are you sure it isn't "fraud".....? http://youtube.com/watch?v=qUxWdIQVT_c And on a related note, I don't know if I have ever envied Stephen more - See below http://youtube.com/watch?v=-xDG07cyWXc&feature=related

WOW!! what a busy Hugh day!! You know though, looking a some of the sites where this story has been posted, it makes me worry, that they are going to give the wrong impression, making people think that Hugh is addicted to Vicodin like his character, or that Hugh thinks drug taking is OK. We know just how good they are about taking everything out of context!! Which I hope I am doing by thinking this!! :!:

This kid had tissues stuffed up his nose, so I called him a freak. He then wrote in his English homework, "Ms. C, who called me a freak, is the science teacher." I suppose I'd be the fraud at the very least, thinking what I actually do is *teach* science.

Thanks for the welcome sdemar and radiosweetheart. I obviously don't want to get in trouble and definitely not on the day I've registered! I'm afraid I don't have a scanner, but I've managed to upload a picture here I hope that link works. I know the quality's bad, but if you click on the image it'll come out a bit bigger and you should be able to read it. I'm sure someone with a scanner will come along soon (I hope). Mods, if this wasn't allowed either, please let me know and I'll delete the post! Thank you so much for the scan! With a couple of exceptions, it all actually sounds like vintage Hugh. As the Rolling Stone writer pointed out, what's missing in print is the tone of voice, which changes things a lot - adds the humor or wryness that takes the edge off comments. Come to think of it, it's also missing the facial expressions. Seeing the complete paragraph about getting offers, I think clearly he's saying that he hasn't had any offers in the U.S. because he's off the market because he's working these relentless hours. But that he hasn't even been offered anything in England. And that's where he seems unhappy about it. "The door has slammed behind me, and that's it" seems to tie back into the earlier remark about perceptions of selling out. I'm kind of surprised at how frank he was about it. (And agree with someone else that it's about the bitterest comment of his that I've ever read.) Not but what I think he's right. Just the other day I made a similar comment on this thread, apropos of the Daily Mail's stream of negative Hugh stories - that an element of British media doesn't like it when one of their own succeeds on the world stage. Or maybe on the U.S. stage in particular. I've observed this for years. I would have hoped, though, that "friends" of Hugh's wouldn't fall into this trap. It's kind of like people who only like a show/band/book until it's discovered by the masses. For anyone to call Hugh a sell-out for doing House, though, is ludicrous. It's not like some cheesy half-hour sitcom or reality show, it's a high-quality show. In a way, I wish Hugh hadn't made that door slamming comment. I mean, if he ever does hope to work in British TV again, I can't see that being helpful. On the flip side, I love that he called the DM on their grumpy stories. Is House successful in Britain? I know the reviews were good when it first came on. Do you think Hugh feels it's underappreciated in the home country, and that makes him feel bad?

Why do articles that identify Jo always mention that she was a theatre administrator? Was she well known in that role in Britain? No, it's just common journalistic practice to list someone's profession like that, particularly if it's a "civilian" married to a celeb. I don't think she's actually been a theatre administrator in ages, IORC she's been a stay-at-home mom since she and Hugh got married, although some writers will always find that unexciting and mention a the "former" career of SAHMs. It's like they have to describe her as something, and she's managed to keep her private life private (more power to her), so this is what they fall back on. I've done it myself, yet I can't even recall the ancient article where I first read that that was what she used to do. ETA: I too cringed at the use of the word "retarded," but I can recognize that he didn't mean anything by it and would likely be horrified and apologetic if pointed out. As usual when it comes to language, Slate has an excellent history on the word: Of course, it's a step up from "moron," "imbecile," or "idiot," which were actually codified as appropriate technical terms in 1910 by the AAMR, then known as the Association of Medical Officers of American Institutions for Idiots and Feeble-Minded Persons. (Morons were the brightest, followed by idiots and imbeciles.) The AAMR replaced those terms with "mild," "moderate," and "severe" retardation in 1959, but the old words did not go quietly: Davidson recalls attending a guest lecture in graduate school in the 1970s where the speaker, an esteemed professor in the field, discoursed on "low-grade imbeciles." (The professor was not invited back.) "Retard" was voted the most offensive term for disability in a BBC poll. Very interesting. I admit that I was bothered, and really wish he hadn't used the word. Yeah, kids bandy it about, but Hugh is no kid. There again, I use "moron" regularly, but "moron" as a technical term is basically unknown nowadays. It's just a synonym for "stupid," which isn't really tied to developmental disabilities, and therefore is fine as an all-round insult. Maybe someday "retarded" will be similarly generic - but IMO, that day hasn't arrived yet. In defense for my taking exception to what he said, I do have pretty good Hugh fan cred, been watching him since the early 90s. :) ETA: Whoever posted that Spoof article, thanks! Hilarious! The Daily Mail will reprint it as straight news. "I lent Stephen fifty quid" - LOL.

Just add to the fun, Dlisted picked up on the story too. Blah (but that's my standard response to everything lately). http://www.dlisted.com/node/24496

New pics of Hugh at LAX airport here, via someone else, via someone else. He's looking fine! (And no brown boots  )

Wow, this must have been one slow news day. Oh and peggy06, I think it's just Hugh being his regular 'ol Eeyore self: or so I'm told by a Brit friend who thinks he's just fine and that that's just how they deal with each other over there. I guess Hugh is so good at being self-deprecating (5th dan martial art, as I recollect), sometimes we forget he's probably saying it with a dimple and a twinkle in his eye. Like the Rollling Stone guy said. At least that's how I choose to read it. ;-) ETA: Stephen Fry has a new podcast up at stephen fry.com/podcasts. He says it's available in blessay form too if you're rather peruse at your leisure. WARNING: If you love to dance or watch dancing or have anything to do with dancing, listen very carefully to what he actually says. He's got one ginormous hangup about it that made me want to say, "there, there, Stephen, you don't ever have to dance or watch anyone else dance if you don't want to." Which oddly coincides with the report of Hugh happily dancing at the airport. Poor SF.

I'm in the UK and I've followed Hugh's career since the beginning. I'm the same age as he is and plenty of my friends love House. It's all over th TV press this week and it's certainly been good to channel 5 who tend to pride themselves in bringing the best US drama to british screens. They even have a satellite channel FIVE US that shows only American TV. The viewing figures will never be as large as the US. We're a small Island with a smaller population. We Brits spend all our time putting oneanother down .It's a national pastime. I'm pretty certain Hugh will work plenty again on British TV in the future, when the right project comes along!!

Any time I've been at he airport...short flight or longish flight or just waiting to pick somebody up...I look like a rumpled mess and it's not attractive. He looks...freakin awesome. Just sayin.
