All spoilers should be spoiler barred --even if they're for shows other than House. We here at HHOW feel very protective towards our lil' spoiler phobes! 8)

amysusanne- 09-12-2007

it's not a spoiler. it might have been presented as such when they were talking to kristen <1>, but emily and david saying that he'd do couples counselling with them was specific to an episode that already aired and wishful thinking for future plots. at this point he hasn't signed on for any future episodes of the show. the interview linked is from last may, before they started work on season three. the one i was referring to was from earlier in the spring. so, don't worry...nobody got spoiled there. :-) eta... <1> yeah, i just footnoted a message board post. to clarify, though: i meant that it might have been presented as a spoiler *by* kristen (i didn't watch the clip), not that it was presented as a spoiler *to* kristen. i make little sense most of the time...i make less sense when i'm sleepy.

How come the Daily Mail loves Stephen and hates Hugh? In Australia we call it tall poppy syndrome. In Britain they probably would just say it's not cricket to become rich, famous and put on a silly accent amongst the colonials - and Stephen has always been loved as a poncy pundit. Also - the Brit press are vicious. Poor Hugh. Wasn't the last scandal about him 'washing his car'. Cutting edge journalism there. But I love the Italians. They seem to adore him over there. Every month there seems to be an article about de sexy doctoro Houso et his mucho mucho sexy wardrobo. It's so sweet. I get this great vision of some hot Italian babe dishing Brad Pitt and going ' now Ugh, e iz a real man' and fanning herself.

Stephen writes a book - Hugh writes a book. Hugh goes to America - Stephen goes to America. Stephen is bi-polar, Hugh has depression. Let's hope neither one of them decides to jump off a cliff Well if one goes you know the other will look for a taller cliff to jump off of.

HL at Indy 2006
Hey, all... So I'm sitting at breakfast this morning in the middle of a grueling work trip that's only halfway over after three and a half days, feeling really blue because I missed seeing one of the most important people in my life on Tuesday by like 10 seconds, which is especially sucky since we live 5,000 miles apart. So anyway, I'm in the midst of composing a Text Message to Convey my Sad Disappointment when my day is suddenly and unexpectedly brightened by a Hugh anecdote related by one of my colleagues. In the hope that I can brighten someone else's day in similar fashion, I'm going to paraphrase what she told me for the rest of you. Remember when Hugh went to the F1 race at Indy as a guest of Chrysler? Well, my colleague was also on that trip. This was in the middle of Chrysler's "Doctor Z" promotion with Dieter Zetsche doing commercials as "Doctor Z," and I guess they played on that by suddenly asking at the start of the morning press conference, "Is there a doctor in the house?" That's when Hugh stood up and said hello, and he then hung out with the group for the rest of the day, which was Sunday, the day of the F1 race. She said he wasn't all that shy, but somewhere between shy and outgoing, very friendly and talkative and apparently a willing participant in all the day's happenings. My colleague and Hugh and one other person were the only three to go for a lap in the pace car with Bernd Mailander even though the option was open to everyone on the trip, and she said he seemed really to be a knowledgeable F1 fan as well as a motorcyclist. She said he was really funny, dryly witty, and that she talked to him about House and plenty of other stuff (She's a House fan, luckily). He told her that the scripts were really good, and that he didn't add anything of his own to what the writers provided. I asked her if he was as attractive in real life, and she said yes, even more so because of a twinkle in his eyes that you don't always see on TV but which is there all the time in real life. She also said that she loved listening to him talk because his voice and his accent were so nice to hear. Anyway, she was really positive about the experience, and hopefully she won't mind me sharing it with you guys. Myself, I couldn't wait to let you guys in on it all. I wish I'd been there myself, but I didn't go to Indy that year, and my connections are all with BMW-Sauber in any case. Still, I wish I'd been there to maybe run into him in the paddock or in the club rooms. Oh well, yet another missed potential connection to mourn! Seems to be the theme of the day in my life...at least today.

that's a great story! thank you for sharing it. She said he wasn't all that shy, but somewhere between shy and outgoing, very friendly and talkative and apparently a willing participant in all the day's happenings. hmmm...so, he wasn't taken there and forced to be social at gunpoint? shocking! everything i thought i knew has been turned upside down! {g} it's nice to hear a story where he's actually presented as a grown up. My colleague and Hugh and one other person were the only three to go for a lap in the pace car with Bernd Mailander even though the option was open to everyone on the trip, and she said he seemed really to be a knowledgeable F1 fan as well as a motorcyclist. you know, i'm not a race fan. i'm not into F1, i'm not into nascar and i'm not really into either of the cultures that surround them. but, i think one of the most fun things in the world would be to ride in the pace car for either sport. i don't know why. it just sounds really, really cool.

jj1963- 09-13-2007

amysusanne, I've never ridden in a pace car, but I think it would be awesome, too, and I think it speaks well of Hugh that he wanted to do it. It's a Mercedes sports sedan of some sort, an AMG 65, I think, so really pretty fast although not like an F1 car. Mailander was a DTM driver and so he's also really good -- and I can tell you from many personal experiences that being driven on a track by a pro driver is one of the most incredible things you can ever do. If you ever get the chance, take it. Not only that, but racing drivers tend to be a pretty sexy bunch, if a little egomanical and with a skewed sense of reality because they really do get, in the words of ABOFAL, "all the sex they can eat." The guy I was so upset about missing by 10 seconds was a racing driver in his day, and his stories about the readiness of women to throw themselves at him are frickin' amazing. Of course, they had other reasons to want to do that, but jeez -- race car drivers, rock stars and actors. It's kind of insane the allure they have. I know I'm not immune! (Maybe not for rock stars, but definitely for actors and drivers.)

I think Hugh likes things with engines. On Leno he talked about getting the chance to fly a fighter jet when he was going for a ride in one. His story about realizing that he was depressed takes place when he was participating in a demolition derby for charity. He certainly loves motorcycles. Then there's this article from the Radio Times which our own amysusanne apparently gave to HughLaurie.net in which he says "Also, you will often find me on the hard shoulder with the bonnet of my latest unusual, failed car up, yelling "Get a Golf!" (Implying that he frequently buys unusual cars.) If anyone is having trouble with the link - hughlaurie.net, articles, Radio Times June 1990

Silja- 09-13-2007

I'm sure I have plenty of things to say but having spent today reading my way through everything posted on this thread the past three weeks, the most pressing thought is 'Stephen Fry went punting?! Poor man. That's hard work.' And I return you now to your regularly scheduled discussion… ETA: Oh, and I'm bloody envious. The Cam is beautiful this time of year.

Hail the Random- 09-13-2007

HL won favorite actor on the Tubeys! Woo!

DOB1234- 09-13-2007

Poeia, I can't get to that Radio Times article about Hugh that you posted. Is it me or is the link broken? Can everybody else get there? ETA: Never mind. I figured out a way to get there.

olivia720- 09-13-2007

jj1963, thanks for that great account! Thats ok that you're one person removed from that. Its a lot closer than I've ever been! DOB, thanks for the invite! I was wondering why the thread was dead over there! I feel better now! Glad I can let loose the Stephen love too. I just saw him the other night on some dreadful movie on Oxygen or We tv. Kate Hudson, a lot of other famous folks . . . whatevs. He played a Christies Auction guy. He was the apex of the film, I'm sure.

amysusanne- 09-13-2007

I think Hugh likes things with engines. he fits the stereotypical boy mode. in a good way. Then there's this article from the Radio Times which our own amysusanne apparently gave to HughLaurie.net i like being referred to as "our own". it makes me feel far more special than i am. {g} i do love that article so much. Poeia, I can't get to that Radio Times article about Hugh that you posted. Is it me or is the link broken? Can everybody else get there? i know you already got there and probably just went the long way around, but usually you can activate a direct link by reloading the page.

BFTV is in the process of updating their website. Homepage has the lovely photo of the band with Hugh wearing his Barking Irons t and fedora. Has info on the upcoming CD/DVD. http://www.bandfromtv.org/index.html

amysusanne- 09-14-2007

wow, it actually looks nice! i wasn't really expecting that much, but they might wind up with a pretty good site. i'm especially looking forward to them adding EPKs and fun stuff like that.
