i don't think they *all* hated each other. in fact, i'd say about half of them actually liked each other. i also sort of got the impression from the BTS stuff and random interviews that of the ones that were there for the majority of the shoot, even those who didn't like each other (save for quaid, whom i don't think spent that much time with the rest of the group and ribisi who is a loner anyway) were sort of bonded together, like soldiers at war.
watching the documentary it rather seemed like the cast was on one side while the director and the outside pests (mainly the entertainment press) were on the other side. i tend to give most people the benefit of the doubt in things and even when i don't like something they've done or some product they've put out there, i don't find myself being 100% negative about them. john moore is the exception. i know that he had studio interference, but i don't believe, for one second that without it that movie would have been any better. there are some good actors in that cast and there are a couple of redemptive moments in the film, so it's clear that with a better, less hacky director they could have made a movie that was at least worth watching for more than a peek at hot, shirtless men. different scenes felt like different movies. some actors seemed like they were acting in totally separate films as well. it was just a mess.
but, again: hot, shirtless men. every movie has something worth praising, i guess...

Yeah, I get the feeling that the supporting cast, at least, was united in their misery. But that director. What a blow hard. During the commentary, all he talked about was his own wonderfulness. There's a big death scene and he's talking about how he had them move the dunes or how he's the only one who figured out how good that scene was and how they should feature it. HL's big dramatic "I'm a very important man" scene and he's all "Wonderful lighting, don't you think?" <Bart Simpson voice>I didn't think it was possible, but he both blows and sucks.</bsv>

And the number one reason I suspect they didn't all hate each other was the fact that someone was running the camera for Hugh in the bathroom and someone else was reading Cuddy's lines. (Alright, alright, alright, there could have been a tripod involved.) And I'd kind of like to think that Scott Michael Campbell's casting in Euphoria had at least a little something to do with Hugh and payback for being Cuddy.

<butthead voice> this sucks more than anything has sucked before.<bhv>
i'm impressed that you made it through the commentary. i loooooove commentary tracks, but i didn't make it fifteen minutes in. good to know that it didn't improve any or suddenly become more than just another john moore vanity project. even in the documentary, though, he seemed so very impressed with himself. i almost wonder if, watching himself, he sees only reasons to be proud and not all the various ways he managed to waste a talented cast of people and a big studio budget.

i'm pretty sure that SMC and...the guy who played the cook whose name i can't think of were both helping him out with his audition tape.
but, yeah...that's a reason to think they didn't all find the site of one another to be pure torture. plus, we have stories of them playing around and doing somersaults down sand dunes and scampering around trying to find hugh's wedding ring when he lost it while they were acting like a bunch of ten year olds.

If you watch it on Mute, put your iPod on shuffle and try to improvise dialog I would imagine this otherwise barely mediocre film could be raised to the level of high art.

Would have been perfect material for Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Is that Phyllida Law in the gondola...or punt...or whatever you call it?
amysusanne- 09-12-2007
yeah, that's her. she plays his aunt in the series.
How come the Daily Mail loves Stephen and hates Hugh?

Stephen looks great in those pics. I wonder if he might be coming to L.A. for the weekend to accompany his colleague to the Emmys.

Stephen Fry alert I was on Youtube and found this interview with Emily Deschanel and David Boreanez regarding the Bones Season 3 . They talk about Stephen coming back to do couples therapy with them.

i like their optimism. it seems that one or both of them made a comment about the possibility of couples therapy on one of those little teaser interviews on the fox website last season. i'm up for it! but, then, i'm up for stephen just hanging out in the room with them whether the scene requires him to be there or not. {g}
speaking of emily and david: watch the listings for craig because they'll both be guests in the next couple of weeks. our hopes are most likely dashed as far as a hugh appearance goes, though. he's not on their taping schedule at this time. maybe he'll make a sweeps appearance. you gotta keep hope alive.
