I think Ryan is fairly amusing...I'd prefer Hugh, but I think Ryan seems good-natured and quick, if a little lame at times. I can't really picture him coming up with clever openings like Conan's last year, as he's not a comedian, but I think he has an adequate personality to host. Plus, if he bombs, I think he'll move on pretty quick, and I'll be amused. If Hugh hosted and the show didn't go well, I think he'd take it harder, and I'd be cringing the whole night.

Since most of the "jokes" on the awards shows are written by a team of "writers" whose humor is, at best, lame, I'm actually happy to let Ryan deal with the crappy hosting duty than subject Hugh to the more cringe-worthy aspects of that job.

Interesting. Anyone who saw the programme Stephen Fry did 'The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive' will have seen SF absolutely terrified just before getting up & hosting a programme and convinced he was going to be terrible - I think it was an awards show - and of course on the surface SF is incredibly good at this kind of role and apparently MADE for hosting jobs; it was an astonishing insight into how he actually felt about it. One wonders if HL has any similar such feelings.
I was amazed at those scenes by SF. He just seems like he can get up in front of an audience and just wing it without a care in the world, but even he gets nervous at those events. I have heard a radio interview where Hugh discussed how nervous he gets when he makes talk show appearances so I would imagine that hosting an awards show would cause him the same anxiety. It’s not something he would do for fun.
If we can't have Hugh I want that Scotty Guy from the Late late late show
What a great idea. Ferguson would be brilliant at the job.

Am I the only conspiracy theorist that thinks Tom O'Neill just likes to jerk the Hugh Laurie chain? (Sounds a little naughty, actually.) He seems to get a great thrill out of announcing these "ooooh, so close to Hugh Laurie but....no" kind of moments.
At any rate, I don't feel as though I've really lost out on the Emmys. I don't really give a rat's ass WHO hosts the show. And I'm happy to keep Hugh out of that particular limelight. As it is, he's high profile yet simultaneously under the radar. The Emmy's would just feel like a lot of blatant overexposure.
Or else I'm just crying sour grapes.
Anyway, I'm off to Bumbershoot. Have a fun weekend, everyone.

Don't know how accurate this is, but someone named allybear left the following comment to Tom O' Neil's story about Hugh hosting the Emmys:
Don't believe the spin some PR person was forcing on you. When they were the original producers, the American Idol guys wanted Hugh as host but he turned them down. He was approached by the network to do it, and Hugh turned it down again. Then the new producers went to him one more time, and Hugh rejected it a third time. There's been an outstanding offer for him to be a presenter, and he won't even accept that.
Who knows what the real story is. I would rather he turned it down than Fox being idiotic enough to believe the audience would be confused to learn Hugh is British.

If this were true, I could completely understand if Hugh didn't want to host the show and turned down the offer, but why in the world would he turn down the request to be a presenter?
iamdaffodils- 09-01-2007
Yeah if any of this is true, I'm not sure why he wouldn't accept to be a presenter either since he's been a presenter for the past two Emmy shows.

i'm pretty sure that the only reason you posted was to brag about that. {g}

i would find it very interesting if it's actually true that the original producers went to hugh laurie before ryan seacrest, particularly since seacrest now has the job. that would be a weird little twist.
either way, whatever. maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but wtf about the whole presenter thing? it's not george clooney going to the oscars, it's hugh laurie who has presented twice and participated in the opening film for one. the wording above is very peculiar. whether he wants to present or not, i find it highly, highly unlikely that he won't be.

Today E! News repeated the last long(-ish) segment they did about Band from TV. There are repeats overnight if you want to see it - all the way at the end of the half hour.
edit: actually, about 20-25 minutes in. It was wishful thinking they were at the end :)
If Seacrest acts as stupidly unfunny on Emmy night as he did today on E!, I may beat my own brains out if I can't fast forward through all his appearances on my TV. Seriously, they should not give him any jokes to read at all. They should not put him in any skits. He should come on, say hello, and introduce someone talented as quickly as possible.

I find Seacrest only bearable when he's on AI, when he's on either that stupid E! news show(I'm still hoping for a massive bitch fest between him and Giuliana, they seem to really hate each other) and I want to bang my head against the nearest object when he's on the red carpet at one of the main award shows.
They could have found a better host than Seacrest, I wonder what information he has on the head honcho's at those places to keep getting jobs like that.

More likely who he's doing to get those jobs.
You really don't want to know how he got his big break in showbusiness
