As much as I would love for that to be true (I'm a lefty myself), I think some shots in that video are reversed for some strange reason. Notice the scene shortly after the golf scene with Ian sitting at Sammi's Place playing with his PDA. He's using his left hand, his watch is on his right wrist, and the writing on the signs behind him is all backwards. In the golfing shot, I'm pretty sure I see his watch on his right wrist again, meaning that the shot is reversed. In any Jeeves & Wooster golfing scenes and in the recent TV Guide picture with him instructing RSL, he's always swinging righty. I don't remember which way he held the cane-as-lacrosse-stick, but I'll take your word for that. It might have been easier that way since he was already holding the handle in his right hand, or he might do a few things lefty. I'm left-handed at 99.9% of things, but hockey sticks and brooms both feel pretty much equal both ways, I'm right-eyed, and my right hand is more flexible from playing guitar to the point that I can only do a one-handed card shuffle with my right hand.

I can only do a one-handed card shuffle with my right hand. Heh. The person who taught me a one-handed shuffle was left handed, and since that's the way I learned it, that's the only way I can do it.

I bat right handed and I use a computer mouse with my right hand. That's it. And the reason for the mouse is that we had a shared Mac (one of those cute little cubes) in my office in the late 80s. In those days you had to turn off the computer to switch the mouse then wait 10 minutes for it to reboot. It was easier to adapt. And, as I haven't held a baseball bat since around that same time, I guess the only thing I do right-handed is mouse. As far as Flight of the Phoenix goes, if the director flipped the negative it was probably just to show how awesome he is.

kittylugnut- 09-16-2009

LOL, that director was indeed awesome. I don't think it was flipped in the movie, though. I have screencaps of the Sammi's Place scene that are right way around, and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if he'd been golfing lefty. I guess I use a mouse/trackball right-handed now, too, but it's only a recent thing. I've had to switch because of wrist problems. If I'm doing something in Photoshop that requires precision, I still often switch back to my left hand. I think that's pretty much the only thing that isn't perfect about Hugh, in my Lefty Pride opinion. Oh well, can't have everything.

I heard Rebecca's left-handed so maybe it runs in the family since left-handedness is partly genetic. Maybe he is ambidextrous. Maybe he's a lefty who was forced to write with his right hand when he was a kid and it just stuck. Or maybe it's just a coincidence or quirk. I guess we'll never know unless someone asks him about it in an interview. PS: Hi, I'm new! *waves* =)

Poeia- 09-17-2009

Welcome. I think the practice of forcing us right-minded people to switch to using our right hands was pretty much gone by the time Hugh was in school. Most likely it's just that he's an excellent athlete with good depth perception and is reasonably adept with either side. Some things work better from one direction and some from the other. That time on the Tonight Show that he had tennis elbow, it was definitely his right arm.

luna_argentea- 09-17-2009

Welcome, cutitout! The eagles could be vultures, biding their time... Of course! Vultures are just the sort of droll little detail that Hugh might think to include. I wonder who they'd eat first... (edited to remove bit about HL's golf swing which I got wrong!)

I think the practice of forcing us right-minded people to switch to using our right hands was pretty much gone by the time Hugh was in school. Not sure on that, my auntie (who is Hugh's age) is naturally left handed but was forced by her school to write right handed. She can use both equally now.

The dog next to Jesse
They're supposed to be on a road trip to/from Las Vegas. Of course, you'd bring the dog. This is HL who goes jogging with his dog, who happens to be big and black. I'm sure HL loves the fact that people will try to make more out of it!

misanthropicobs- 09-17-2009

Actually the dog is a chocolate labrador retriever. He looks a lot like the 94 lb lab who is in charge of my house (at least he thinks he is).

Well, maybe in America, but who knows, maybe they still did that at Dragon School back in the 1960s. Schools were (and still are) pretty strict in the UK. And there are many causes for "tennis elbow" - doesn't necessarily mean he got it from playing tennis. Welcome. I'm sure HL loves the fact that people will try to make more out of it! Well, I do like to complicate simple things. :D Maybe, depending on plot developments, I'll end up believing my own speculation. Schools were (and still are) pretty strict in the UK. Some of them might be but not all of them. The Dragon School and Eton were and are since they are well-known and highly regarded independent schools.

I have no idea what/how he was golfing in FotP, etc. But re. the lacrosse biz. in House, it's a lot easier to avoid putting all your weight on your (damaged) right leg if you're playing left-handed. There is one scene where House either swings a baseball bat or mimics doing so right-handed, and it's very awkward looking because he never shifts his weight from one leg to the other.

Poeia- 09-17-2009

Forcing people to switch comes from a belief that left handedness was somehow evil as if the person were possessed. In heraldry, the left side is "sinister." By the 1960, the damage that can be cause by making people switch was well known. Continuing to do that would, in my opinion, not be "strict" but backwards. ETA: Saying there's something wrong with me because I am left-dominant isn't "strict." Strict would be upholding high academic standards. And Hugh does play tennis. Anyone know where there's a link to the "Gifto" interview?
