Wonder if he's growing his beard out for the start of next season.
That's the only thing I can think of. I guess Mayfield doesn't allow razor blades and House is stubborn enough to refuse to use an electric razor.

I keep wondering the same thing, but HL could always shave now and have time to grow it in again before the season starts, so ...
Maybe it's just because, as they noted in the link, he was harder to spot with the beard and the hat.

Quite possible. His new look took me back to the scene in "Distractions" when he was attending Von Lieberman's talk and didn't want to be recognized.

Whoa check out that beard, hugh.
Hmm...it could be for anonymity. If he keeps his beard growing until they start filming, wouldn't his beard be like Grizzly Adams?

They only get about 6 weeks off, I think. Somewhere in the 730 pages of this thread someone posted that Hugh once said it takes X weeks weeks for it to grow out enough so he has to stop shaving that long before shooting.
If, at the start of S6, he needs a fuller beard, he'd have to stop shaving even sooner. If it came down to the point where he could shave for a week then stop, I can see where he wouldn't bother.
This, of course, is complete supposition. I don't know if any spoilers for S6 have emerged yet. If they have, I haven't read them. So I could be completely wrong.
I don't see how a beard would work as a disguise, however. Other than the flashback in Three Stories and in The Softer Side, he's always had a beard on House. Most fans would be more likely to recognize him with one than without. (After all, the lunacy level of devotion we exhibit really isn't the norm.)

That's certainly true, haha.

Good point.

But House just has scruff, to my eyes. About a three-four day growth. Not a full beard, and I think that's the difference between the looks.

Maybe he just decided he likes it. :) I quite like it, I have to say. But I like Hugh in all incarnations.

I love all this speculation about the state of Hugh's facial hair. If it was a disguise, I would expect him to make a bit more effort and wear a pair of glasses as well. Also, isn't the weather usually hot and sunny in LA at this time of year? So he'd be better off wearing a fake beard that he could take off in private to keep cool. But it definitely looks real.
If he is growing it for the start of Season 6, your timescale seems feasible, Poeia. But if he has started growing it sooner than is necessary for an average-length beard, maybe House actually is going to look like Grizzly Adams (who I just looked up on Google Images  ).
Or perhaps it has nothing to do with Season 6. Maybe he is going on holiday to Antarctica soon (to get away from the paparazzi) and is growing it for warmth (although I wouldn't be surprised if there were paparazzi even there and we ended up with photos of him standing beside some penguins with an iceberg in the background). :D
I really enjoyed the Radio 4 Front Row interview. I liked how near the beginning he mentioned being baffled as to what gripping drama could have preceded the last two lines about the ice cream sandwich in The Archers and that he said this shortly after the latest episode of it had just finished before Front Row, so that it would amuse the regular listeners of The Archers.
I too loved the emo boat question (and I love that it's known as the emo boat).
It did sound as if Mark Lawson was reading out that medical condition from a piece of paper and I liked that Hugh made a point of telling the listeners just to make sure we knew!

...Or he may be just experimenting how long it takes to be fully beard, so that he knows exactly when to start unshaving before Season 6.
...but if he'll be fully beard at the beginning of the next season, I'd like his hair long also, like a hermit, or a hippy.

Yap! Exactly!
Oops, I'm getting in the way of the flip book effect of yours, luna and euphrosyna. :P
Edit: no, I didn't get in with my first post. good.

My Lord, he looks like Ted Neeley from Jesus Christ Superstar in that pic. Good look for Ted but not Hugh.
I think the beard may be for Season 6 but this is what baffles me about that. If he has a full beard when Season 6 starts and he is at Mayfield, Season 6 isn't going to start at the point that Wilson dropped him off and you will have to assume he has been there for a while. His hair was way short in the photos of him in France. It won't be very long by the time they start filming. And every pic we see of him, he is wearing that baseball cap. His wife was wearing a dress and Hugh has his baseball cap on. Does he not want us to see his head? Sorry, I got off track. Anyway wouldn't it be odd that he would have really short hair (assuming they did electroshock) but a thick beard? Thick beard=long period of time from when he was admitted; short hair=short time he was admitted.
Should I take that last paragraph and move to spoilers even though I am only guessing since I know nothing?

Oh god, don't remind me. Worst. Movie. Facial. Hair. Ever.

I suppose it makes sense that a character that doesn't bother to shave everyday when he goes to work would completely abandon grooming when he was hospitalized.
I just hope they don't take it too far and make him look like Grizzly Adams. HL can do so much acting with his eyes and expressions that the mountain man look would be distracting.
