I think that House is sexy, but that Hugh Laurie isn't. Same here.

Can all of you in the "Hugh-Laurie-is-not-sexy" brigade at least have the decency to all gather in one place so it's easier for me to knock some sense into you? :-)

In Season 1 it made sense for them to talk about how sexy he is. Hugh Laurie was known for being funny, talented, musical, a good writer... but he usually wasn't considered sexy. And now all those things add to the sexy argument. {g} It's now three years later. He can do drop dead, make women drool like idiots sexy if the character calls for it. He just rarely showed that side before. We get it. You don't have to keep telling us. They can also stop telling us how hot Jamie Denton, Kyle Chandler, Patrick Dempsey, Milo Ventimiglia, Taye Diggs, etc., are...but, they won't. Dempsey's wife had twins and the little blurb in, I think it was US, managed to work in how "McDreamy" he is. They're about as likely to cut that out as that chick elsewhere in the fandom who has been saying she's going to quit watching the show since early last season. She hasn't quit watching and the press hasn't lost interest in the McDreamies, McSteamies, McCrankies of television. It might be annoying, but it's what they latch on to. It's easier to write a twenty five word blurb about how cute someone is than it is to write it about how they're studying horticulture during their off hours. They'd rather get Olivia Wilde to comment on Hugh's hotness than just about anything else. Unless he's teaching orphans about horticulture in his off hours because orphans trump sexy unless you're Brad and Angie and can work both in there at once. It's kind of funny, though. There was a huge "shut up bitch!" to do back at the end of season one when Sela first guest starred. There was a little two page picture thing in TV Guide of behind the scenes stuff on the set and they had Sela tell them what was going on in each picture. In one she said that she and Hugh were having a discussion on Camus and pointed out that Hugh's a very smart guy. I have no idea if she was serious or if she was making a joke about the level of conversation between takes, but either way that was *not* a popular thing to say. She was accused of being pretentious and sucking up to Hugh and trying to impress him so that he'd like her. Of course none of that made much sense because...huh? So, you know, even when they don't go the "Hugh's a hottie" route they get a load of crap.

Can all of you in the "Hugh-Laurie-is-not-sexy" brigade at least have the decency to all gather in one place so it's easier for me to knock some sense into you? Hey, I'll toss 'em up and you do the knocking, Bailey ;-) HL is so massively sexy when he allows you to (rarely) see it that when it's hidden behind his pulling faces and goofiness, and you know it's there, it makes all that sexy too. Not many guys can do that. (Have you not seen him riding his bike, accepting an award, smiling, talking about his friends,...) On second thought, never mind, shorter line at the Lisbon piano bar...

Poeia- 10-06-2007

On second thought, never mind, shorter line at the Lisbon piano bar... Not a chance. The fact that I think House is sexy and HL is "only" talented, funny, fascinating, brilliant, etc. doesn't mean I won't be fighting your for a piano-side seat.

I think that House is sexy, but that Hugh Laurie isn't. Same here. Don't worry . . . Hugh Laurie would agree with you. I think they both are. :D

Bailey and Boffle, sign me up for the posse. As I said previously, he thing that hits me is that HL has been in the business for a long time, was probably recognized on the street in some places and has had an image that was not particularly sexy - lovable, perhaps, but not sexy. He understood the business and all it entails, especially his place in it as a lovable character actor. Now, his image has been reinvented, not by design, but by fate(?). He is a "sex symbol", a star who is known and recognized. He finds himself stalked by the ubiquitous digital camera, perceived in ways that at one level must be thrilling, maybe even something that he coveted in the abstract (as anyone might), but on other levels still completely odd or even unnerving. His family, and his wife, in particular, has had to readjust to this new reality which may or may not be temporary. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just that it must be a little disorienting.

I guess this question can go in the media thread. I keep reading that studios are stockpiling scripts to prepare for the possible/probable writers' strike. But if they do strike, won't they picket, and won't actors and others refuse to cross the picket lines? If that's so, how could production continue?

Can all of you in the "Hugh-Laurie-is-not-sexy" brigade at least have the decency to all gather in one place so it's easier for me to knock some sense into you? :-) I never lie... I'm with that brigade *runs off to hide* I love HL's wit and his smile and his clothes and his novel and his musical talents, but I don't think he's sexy. House, on the other hand...

scrabbleninja- 10-07-2007

What makes this topic endlessly fascinating (at least to me, and apparently to many others) is the dichotomy between Hugh as House and Hugh as Hugh -- at least the small part of the private person that he allows the public to see. I had enjoyed his work as a comic actor, pre-House, without any appreciation of his potential in more serious roles. From the first (and especially the second) episode of House I was flabbergasted at his ability to portray this complex character -- funny, serious, annoying, gifted, intellectual, crude, all these contradictory qualities -- while making him a real, believable character. I consider his ability to play this role so brilliantly an indicator of the man's sex appeal.

jonne- 10-07-2007

I think House is more sexy, but to me Hugh is so much more attractive..... I wouldn't mind sitting next to him on the flight from LA to London for a few hours (count your blessings Rachel!) but I'm not so sure about House. I think I would feel quite uncomfortable.

sweet fern- 10-07-2007

Can I say here that I found Bertie Wooster sexy when HL played him and the sexy scruffiness (presentiments of House's scruffy sexiness...) of HL's character was the only thing I could tolerate about the live action version of 1001 Dalmations? I'm not a sicko, right? :?

hughsblues- 10-07-2007

Not a chance. The fact that I think House is sexy and HL is "only" talented, funny, fascinating, brilliant, etc. doesn't mean I won't be fighting your for a piano-side seat. Poeia I'm shocked!! This is such news to me cause I totally had you pegged as thinking HL was sexy! At least it seems like you're always part of those discussions but maybe not. Whatever...I don't know you at all anymore! *G* I'm joining you guys in line at that piano bar cause I'm in the camp that can't imagine someone NOT finding Hugh sexy. His other qualities give us more to talk about cause they could fill a book but he is also a damn sexy guy. I guess I don't know if it's totally physical or just a combination of everything about him that makes sexy in my eyes...he does have some typical hot guy qualities though. Eyes and arms especially. Everything else though I think is just the radiating Hughness... I wanted to reply to that since it's here but since it's not really media I'll stop drooling over Hugh now in this thread. Speaking of media...did anyone watch the clip marykir put up of Teri Hatcher talking about BFTV? I swear she calls GG "Greg Grumbel." I've listened a couple times and that's what it sounds like and it's weird cause it's making me do that Conan O'Brien thing where I get an image of what it would look like if Greg Grunberg and Greg Gumbel...you know that sports guy...mated. And can I tell ya? Creepy.

I guess this question can go in the media thread. I keep reading that studios are stockpiling scripts to prepare for the possible/probable writers' strike. But if they do strike, won't they picket, and won't actors and others refuse to cross the picket lines? If that's so, how could production continue? It's tricky and it all depends so, no, there's no definite that actors wouldn't continue to act while writers are on strike. There are cross union supporters, but most people continue to do their own jobs while others are on strike. Like when AFTRA was on strike a few years back, actors on series would support them when they weren't working and picket with them to show solidarity, but they still went to their day jobs. The problems that Hollywood is facing is that the SAG deals will also be up soon so they need to get the writers to agree to something so that they won't draw this out until the actors begin renegotiating because then things will really shut down. I don't think there's anything to really worry about this season, but if they don't get both unions to settle on something then next season could be a mess and we really could be watching "America's Next Top Pirate" or "MILF Island". I'm joining you guys in line at that piano bar cause I'm in the camp that can't imagine someone NOT finding Hugh sexy. I'll just let you guys all fight it out. It's easier to be the last woman standing that way. {g} I wanted to reply to that since it's here but since it's not really media I'll stop drooling over Hugh now in this thread. Speaking of media...did anyone watch the clip marykir put up of Teri Hatcher talking about BFTV? I swear she calls GG "Greg Grumbel." Yeah, that's totally what she says. Well, sort of. I had Leno on that night and saw she was a guest and left it on because I thought Jay might ask her about the Emmys. I hit record on the tivo and rewound it a few times, too. It's like she sort of garbles it, like she knows it starts with "Grun" and then she sort of blanks on it and mumbles it into something that sounds like "Grunble". I thought it was funny because I can relate to the idea of panicking in the middle of a word because you have no idea where that word is going. Beyond that, though, her story about rehearsing with them was pretty cute. I've listened a couple times and that's what it sounds like and it's weird cause it's making me do that Conan O'Brien thing where I get an image of what it would look like if Greg Grunberg and Greg Gumbel...you know that sports guy...mated. And can I tell ya? Creepy. Yeah, that's a strange "if they mated" combo.

moved Hugh Laurie lovin' post to Homina, homina, homina thread where it belongs ;-)
