Everyone is so damned narcissistic. Screw everyone lies, everyone is self-involved is the real truth. Why some random viewer feels the need to publish in a nationally syndicated media outlet that s/he has stopped watching a television show is entirely beyond me. True, we come here to proclaim that we watch it, but that's different. Shared narcissism is more forgivable.

More to the point, why would TV Guide bother to print letters like that? Their only reason for existing is to pimp TV shows. Do they think they need to uphold the principles of journalism by giving 'both sides of the story' in their letters column? Don't make me laugh TVG.

galaxygirl- 10-03-2007

What in the world does a negative reaction to those pictures or that interview look like?? Enough with Hugh Laurie! He plays a boring, one-dimensional character who's grown so tiresome, I've quit watching. I'm amazed with how popular this opinion is.

Lully- 10-03-2007

Really? I thought the popular opinion was that HL is amazing!

Everyone is so damned narcissistic. Screw everyone lies, everyone is self-involved is the real truth. Why some random viewer feels the need to publish in a nationally syndicated media outlet that s/he has stopped watching a television show is entirely beyond me. I really don't understand it either. I've never understood it. I hate the TV Guide letters column just as I hate the TVG Cheers and Jeers page, but in 25ish years of reading the magazine I have never been able to make myself stop reading either of them. They're just so absurd. They've always been stupid and kind of sad, but it seems that they've only gotten stupider and sadder. In the case of the the letters, they've probably gotten dumber and *shallower* as a result of the internet. It's much easier and less time consuming to send out a quick email letting the world know that you think Hugh Laurie is dreamy (or ugly, depending on your POV) than it is to write it down on paper, find a stamp and envelope and drop it in the mail. Still, I question why some people even take that twenty seconds to write the email in the first place. Whenever I see one of those "I am never watching this show again!" letters all I can think is, "well...thanks for letting us all know". It's like the most public of flounces. On one hand it's funny because it's so ridiculous, but on the other hand it's irritating because it's already annoying enough to see people flounce on the internet...I don't need it in my print magazines as well. True, we come here to proclaim that we watch it, but that's different. Shared narcissism is more forgivable. I think the thing is that, yeah...we're all at least a little narcissistic with our blogs and our lj communities and our message boards, but most of us do those things to engage other people in conversation about the things we like or don't like. Sure, there are plenty of blogs and such out there that are just so that someone can rail against something with no input, but for the most part we like having someone offer up their thoughts on what we're saying. Maybe that's actually *more* narcissistic because in a way we feed on the responses we get and that little number next to the comments link on our sites. But, it's more of a community. When someone writes into TVG to let the world know that they're not watching "House" there's no real point to it beyond them getting to see their name in print and, I suppose, feeling special that now the entire TVG reading public knows where she stands on the subject of Hugh Laurie and "House". My only hope is that someone takes offense and writes a counter letter. Those are the most entertaining things TVG has to offer these days. The idea that someone would read a magazine and instead of responding to the editorial comment they would be moved to respond to someone else's response to something is just awesome. I guess I'm a hypocrite. I hate how dumb they are, but I love it when they reach their full potential of stupid. Hugh got off easy, though. One of the more appalling letters that I saw last year after a cover story on CSI was someone who felt that they needed to let TVG and their readers know that she didn't think Sara and Grissom should be together because, basically, Sara is just too damn ugly. Yeah. That's deep and insightful. Thanks for letting us all know what a shallow bitch you are, TVG reader. There are dozens of well thought out reasons why the Sara/Grissom ship is/was/is doomed. Instead, this chick just acted like a ten year old trying to steal someone's boyfriend on the playground. Lame.

Thanks for posting that marykir but I guess I'm sorry I asked cause that's ridiculous and it pisses me off. It doesn't piss me off that someone dislikes Hugh or the character or that TVG covers both of those things but it pisses me off that he or she actually made the effort to write that in like Siriusly and amysusanne said. The CSI one is waaay worse for sure...I don't remember seeing that one! Damn. That was tasteless of TVG to even print it. Quote: Enough with Hugh Laurie! He plays a boring, one-dimensional character who's grown so tiresome, I've quit watching. I'm amazed with how popular this opinion is. Not trying to be defensive or start something...but what are you basing that on? From everything I've seen...it's not popular at all.

The CSI one is waaay worse for sure...I don't remember seeing that one! Damn. That was tasteless of TVG to even print it. It was pretty tasteless. I did a quick search online and can't find it, but I'm sure that issue is still lying around since I don't tend to throw things away that have pretty pictures of Billy Petersen in them. {g} I'll try to see if I can find it so you can read all the bile as it was intended and not just my synopsis of it. Not trying to be defensive or start something...but what are you basing that on? From everything I've seen...it's not popular at all. Yeah, I don't buy that. Plenty of people don't like Hugh and plenty of people don't like "House" *or* House, but that's not the popular opinion. Maybe the popular opinion in certain corners of the fandom, but even if the entire fandom thought Hugh walked on water, that's still a very, very small percentage of the people watching television on Tuesday nights. We're not talking "CSI Miami" here, where everybody on the planet watches it and the popular opinion among viewers, bloggers, critics, actors, little children etc. is that Caruso is a douche. As it is, Hugh's a pretty popular, critically respected guy. I'd say more people are indifferent to him than actively dislike him.

Ivillage review.

Alan Sepinwall has another in his series of occasional reviews up. I'm pretty much in agreement with his take on the thing. Crowded Scene

Not everyone loves the show and there are people out there who find House a tiresome one dimensional character, I run into them every day, both IRL and online.

http://www.canmag.com/nw/9152-house-robert-sean-leonard Nice little interview with RSL, includes comments on the NKOTB arc & CC&F but nothing we don't already know if you've seen ep 1 & 2. (with bonus Ken Burns reference!)

Wow. If I don't like a show or an actor or character on a show, I just ... don't watch the show. Keeps everyone happy. I didn't realize we were supposed to broadcast our opinions to the world in emails to TV Guide. I thought nobody needed to know that I think Caruso is a douche. My bad.

Yeah, note to self: Next time anyone from Grey's Anatomy is on the cover, *must* send TV Guide an e-mail telling them why I don't like it, don't watch it, and whoever's on the cover is very one dimensional. The world as we know it can't continue to exist unless TV Guide knows who I don't like.

The world as we know it can't continue to exist unless TV Guide knows who I don't like. Don't do it if it's Sara Ramirez. She was so brilliant in Spamalot -- she stole it from Tim Curry, Hank Azaria and David Hyde Pierce. I can't even try to watch GA, but I still want everyone to know how great she is. I think part of the reason people write those letters is because, deep down, they believe "if TV Guide just publishes my letter, then people will read it and realize how boring the show is. So they'll all stop watching it and the show will be canceled. And it will all be thanks to me."

If you don't want to know the (possible? probable? definite?) outcome of Survivor:House, you should turn off any House or Hugh Google alerts for a day or two. Turning them off 2 hours ago would have been even better...
