MaryKir's Watch This - House edition Recap
RSL does the "You're watching TV Guide ... (looks at microphone) Network!?" bit before the program. It is possibly the best part of the half hour.
Intro makes heavy use of the EPK, episode stills, and clips from the show. For some reason they still stick in ancient on-set stuff during those montage sequences TVG seems to love. That whole meet the new cast bit in the episode description? This is about all the meeting you'll do...
Lisa is in the studio talking about the show and answering fans' Cuddy questions. Unfortunately most of her responses are "I don't know" or "I'm ready to have sex with anyone." The usual.
The commercial break seems really long at normal speed ;)
Omar does the "You're watching..." thing coming back from break. He's far less confused than RSL.
More from Lisa in the studio, talking about dirty jokes on the set and being a celebutant.
Dang, there are a lot of commercials...seriously, there can't be more than 15 minutes of actual content in this program.
Futon Critic guy and TV Guide guy come in to talk about the cast shakeup, why the show is successful, Kal Penn, etc. But it sounds like they've only seen a couple episodes and don't really have any answers about season 4.
Basically, no new info. There were some clips from future episodes running in the background, so if you're completely avoiding advance info you'll probably want to pass on this.

That REALLY SUCKED. Half of the show was commercials (not exaggerating). They talked about "Kumar" for a few minutes, which when you've got about 15 minutes of content is quite a lot. It came across quite unprofessional to me because they did call him Kumar. They focused on shippy questions. And like, marykir said, the two "experts" didn't seem to know anything that we don't. They showed clips of people asking questions that they didn't even answer (drug addiction stuff). It was just... poorly executed.
marykir- 09-27-2007
Seriously, anyone on this forum with video editing skills could have put together a better program just from stuff that is or has been posted online.
extra_cat- 09-27-2007
True. We at least know better than to call Foreman, Cameron and Chase "Eric, Allison, and Robert" while showing a video clip of Wilson! And they never did really talk about "Eric, Allison, and Robert."
marykir- 09-27-2007
Yeah, I was just looking at the promo & the program itself never really did *anything* that was mentioned in the promo and didn't use most of the clips either.
They would have been better off just stringing the EPK interviews together. At least that would have said something about CCF, the new kids, and could be construed as hanging with Hugh. If, you know, you didn't know about the EPK.

I was kinda surprised to hear Lisa complain that the joking on set gets too dirty sometimes. Wonder who's doing that? She sounded almost prudish, which sure isn't the way she usually seems to be.
I was also interested in the question posed as to why, when House is such a huge hit, it doesn't get nearly the media attention as say, GA. The answer was some dumb-ass bit about not being as much of a soap as GA and the fact that there's no continuous, on-going plot to the episodes. Total BS. Maybe the cast need to start having affairs with each other and punching each other out. Now that the media would pay attention to, but just putting out a damned good show, nah, not so much. Stupid media.

I do think it's oversimplifying it to argue that there is a lack of continuous storylines or even soapy elements to the show, but I don't think they're far off with the theory that the prevalence of that one GA is what gets them so many covers. I really don't think it's BS at al. GA is simply a more "media friendly" show. Though, to be fair, House is hardly hurting for magazine covers or media mentions, they just aren't out there in the way that GA is.
Maybe the cast need to start having affairs with each other and punching each other out. Now that the media would pay attention to, but just putting out a damned good show, nah, not so much. Stupid media.
Maybe the media is stupid, but it's a circular problem. Though calling it a "problem" is a bit dramatic. It's not. US magazine doesn't give any kind of a shit if GA is a better or worse show than House. They care about photogenic people doing interesting, tabloid worthy things. Jennifer and Jesse very quietly hooked up, very quietly dated, very quietly got engaged and very quietly split up. On the other hand, Kate Walsh met her husband just a few months ago, had a high profile romance and gushed about it anyone who put a mic in her face. There's nothing wrong with that. She put it out there. Jennifer, otoh, generally answers questions about her and Jesse with "I don't like to talk about my personal life". So, people don't. Kate Walsh being on the cover of US magazine doesn't have anything to do with whether her show is good or not. Likewise, having a cast full of people who love the spotlight and having the press cover them more than the show also doesn't mean that they're putting out a bad show. I'm sure that the folks at House are probably happy that when they get covers it's usually about their work and not about who they're sleeping with. And as much as I believe that the people of GA like doing three red carpets a night it's probably more satisfying when the magazines choose to actually praise their work instead of rate their wardrobe choices.
When it comes to magazines that actually at least pretend to be about the product and not the personal lives of the people creating the project, House does get a competitive amount of coverage. If I had to guess I'd say that they've probably gotten just as many covers of TVG as GA has. They've gotten their EW stories. Sometimes it's a matter of perception. We notice the people we don't want to see far more than we notice the people we would love to see. I remember someone writing letters to EW during season two about how unfair it was that GA got so much coverage and House didn't. Breaking out the last three months issues at the time, House had actually gotten an equal amount of coverage. It just didn't seem like it for whatever reason.
As a whole, though, I think the main difference when it does come to a lack of equal media coverage it's simply a matter of teh House cast being a more private cast than GA's. Hugh Laurie isn't going to pose with his children for magazine covers. Patrick Dempsey will. There's nothing wrong with Hugh not doing it or Patrick agreeing to do it. Likewise, Robert Sean Leonard, though just as unfiltered as Katherine Heigl is, isn't going to run to the mic to give his opinion of whatever he's cranky about. Heigl, not being as media shy as he is, has no problem with it. It's just who they are. When they do venture in front of a camera they tend to get some notice, but the story isn't generally the show, it's the people who appear on the show.

Plus now there are two shows (GA, PP) and various film projects, so even if the media only did stories about the work, there are potentially more stories about the GA/PP cast than the House cast. That said, I'm already sick of them less than one week into the official season. GA/PP and DwtS. That show is enough hours of the week as it is - do we really need every infotainment show to do a 5 minute recap/story?
Re. the Watch This program, I thought the TV Guide guy's answer about the show not getting attention because it didn't have water cooler, who's sleeping with whom, moments pretty ironic. Most of the questions they asked during their program were about House/Cuddy, Cuddy/Wilson, House/Cameron, Cuddy having a baby..... Fans seem to have a wider range of questions about the show than the media chooses to address.
amysusanne- 09-28-2007
See, I'm not sick of any new or old shows yet because I'm you're four days ahead of me in the infotainment department. By tommorrow afternoon I'll be ready to find Tom Bergeron and beat the hell out of him, I'm sure. {g}
And that's a good point wrt to outside projects also being big news for GA. The House crew haven't really had anything like that to capitalize on. When you see Hugh on the cover of EW it's about House. When you see Katie Heigl, it could be any number of things these days. GA or no GA, "Knocked Up" was obviously going to be huge, with or without her. It helped her as much as she helped it. If it had been Jennifer Morrison instead, it would have brought in pretty much the same audience because Apatow has a golden horseshoe up his ass right now. Likewise, Dempsey's about to be all over the place in a freakin' Disney movie. Even if it crashes and burns, it's Disney. Something tells me that poor Jennifer is not going to be getting that treatment when whatever this Rob Schneider nonsense is comes out. It has nothing to do with her or House, it's the projects' place on the food chain.

Once again not sure where to put this, so I just picked a thread.
Has anyone seen this yet? It's a charity tea pot signed by the House cast and if you want it you've got fifteen minutes left. (Found the link at Diane Kristine's blog)

Cute.
And, um, I posted something that didn't show up, probably because it timed out and I just didn't notice, soo...
Jennifer got two mentions in the glossy entertainment magazines this week. Or at least the ones I saw. I haven't gotten EW yet and OK wasn't on the stands when I stopped by. She did, however, wind up as one of the three best dressed of the week in In Touch (along with someone that I forget and Ginnifer Goodwin). It was her Emmy dress and entire Emmy look. They were much impressed. She also showed up on the style pages of people as a part of a "little black dress" spread. The pic was from the Chanel party this week.
Olivia Wilde also got a quick pic and mention, but in a much less positive way and in a way that really never ceases to annoy me. She was the gal who got dissed the "who wore it better" section. She looked beautiful, as did Natasha Henstridge, the "winner" of the "who wore it better" cage match. The person they dis almost *always* looks fantastic. I've never really been able to figure out why they even do that. And it's not the one where 100 people on the street are polled. This is done by the editors. I guess whichever actress they like better wins? I dunno...of all the bizarre snarky fashion whatevers, that's the one that actually bugs.

The show has appeared on Amazon's Unabox confirming my fears that it will be available only on Amazon and not on ITunes.
Bones however, is on both
amysusanne- 09-29-2007
Bones is on both because Bones isn't NBC's property. Nothing (at least nothing current) that belongs to NBC will be on itunes because they (NBC) got greedy and demanded more money. itunes laughed at them and that was the end of that relationship.
Siriusly- 09-29-2007
So "House" is owned by NBC?!
saara_zaara- 09-29-2007
BTW, Amazon Unbox has Alone available for free this weekend if anyone wants a legal download.
