I'm sorry to hear she got grief for asking what she did. I think it's great she had the guts to ask, amazing that they broadcast it, & love HL's response! I don't recall ever actually speaking to her about her question, so I don't know if I gave her grief, but I was definitely one of the people who thought the question was stupid and out of place. It was a question for something like Paley or a regular Q&A, but I didn't like it at ITAS. Silly internet and shipper questions, no matter what their focus, just didn't work for me in that setting and since most of the questions were lame as it was it would have been nice for someone to actually ask something of substance. He handled it well and his answer was cute, but it was disappointing that nobody asked him anything with any real depth to it. I remember being far more annoyed about it at the time than I am now, mainly because I found myself on a side of an argument that I didn't want to be on and it became all about House/Wilson and not the actual merit of the question. I've never been against House/Wilson and greatly resented being pushed into/finding myself in an argument for or against that pairing. I was disappointed that it came to that and in some cases it was just as much my fault as it was others, though trolling definitely played a role. At the other place I've had more than a couple of moments of arguing a point that I don't necessarily 100% believe because it supports the greater point that I do believe. I think that by design, that's something a lot of people do at that site, which is a bummer, but things get so twisty over there that it's sometimes out of your hands. I'd either be a great politician or a horrible politician. I can't decide. Anyway, I do admit that I was already cranky given the fact that the people asking the questions were supposed to be students (most of which were, even if they weren't Pace students or specifically acting students) and here was some teacher from Jersey who ran down and sat in the front even though she knew she wasn't supposed to be there. But, that's my pet peeve and it's from the perspective of someone who wouldn't have had a question even if she was a student at the school. All that said, nothing she did at ITAS made her the least bit batshit. It was her TWOP behaviour. She shared a little too much personal information, made a lot of people uncomfortable and seemed to either be putting out some sort of cry for help or just feeding off the attention. She was eventually banned. I don't know the exact reasons, but I assume it was her insistance on discussing her personal, possible (assuming any of it was true) illegal actions involving her and an underage student as well as several other "you should really not be sharing this" stories. She was kind of the queen of TMI. I was never involved in those conversations because I don't hang out in the Meet Market. I found out via a third party and read the exchanges with fascinated, morbid curiosity. I felt really bad for the posters who were both trying to help her out and the ones trying to nicely tell her to please stop talking. It was a weird moment in time over there at TWOP. I don't know if this is even a conversation that the mods over here want happening so I won't go into any further detail unless they don't actually care, but a search of, mainly, the Meet Market around the time of the taping and then the airing of ITAS should bring up the discussion. I don't believe that the mods over there deleted any of it. eta: I'm sorry, but I could be wrong about that last part. That site is especially cranky this morning, so I don't know if I'm just not getting a complete search or if posts were deleted.

Amysusanne explained the whole situation in far more detail than I even knew (not being a Meet Market person). Thanks. And now that we have a clearer picture, I think we should stop discussing her. We're talking about a specific person - a poster at another site and this is doing nothing to further the topic. So let's move on. Okay, my darlings? SaphronGirl! What a fantastic way to word the question - I wouldn't be surprised if it is one that got asked. Good for you. :-)

Still trying to think of something interesting to submit. Unfortunately, I am entirely uninteresting and so have yet to think of a thing :hang:

Siriusly- 09-24-2007

SafronGirl, bloody brilliant. I really hope you submitted that exactly and that it gets chosen. See, I LIKE it when people have the courage to ask things I would like to. (Thanks for telling us a fuller story, amysuzanne. I'd seen the ITAS interview but have never gone into the Meet Market over There.)

What an interesting opportunity, though. Now, to come up with a tactful way to ask "Seriously? What did you guys do to Cuddy?" or something along those lines. vitawash99, if you can could up with a good way to word that question, please let us know! I'm H/W all the way, but I don't like the idea of submitting ship related questions. First of all, I don't think we'd ever get a 'straight' answer. If the H/W relationship were going to develop in that direction, would TPTB really reveal it beforehand? I think I'd ask more open ended questions about the characters and their general development. The question about Cuddy would be interesting because it seems clear that a large portion of people didn't exactly like or get her characterization in S3. I know that some people liked it and have made very persuasive arguments as to why.. But still, a lot of people didn't, so I'd like so see if there was a big discrepancy between what TPTB were going for and what actually made it to the screen.

I'm sure nobody wants to get into the debate again but I've been out of the loop here for a couple days so I just want to add real fast that I think amysusanne is right about how out of place it was to ask House questions during the ITAS q&a. It doesn't really matter whether the question was one that lots of House fans are interested in...that's not really the point. Any House question dealing with plot or character relationships would have been just as out of place...this one just happened to be about a popular ship so the whole thing just went nuts in the fandom. Asking Hugh a question about how he gets into character for House would have been ok...or what's it like if he reads something that he has a problem with and has to talk to his writers...some kind of question about the acting process or the craft or whatever. But plot or ship questions that are so specific like that just isn't what the whole thing is for. It was supposed to be about Hugh Laurie's career not Dr. House's lovelife which is why the q&a pretty much blew...no one asked the right kinds of questions. Ship questions for that TV guide thing are probably what they're gonna get most. I don't know what I would wanna ask but I don't really care about the ships...I'm a little scared of this whole thing though. You know...cause even though this kind of question wouldn't come from people on this board you just KNOW someone's gonna go the whole "does Hugh Laurie use a cane in real life?" route...

Personally, I found the whole ITAS episode frustrating because Lipton seemed more interested in hearing himself speak. There was precious little about the craft of acting. I would have loved to hear HL's views on how he finds his character in the various things he's done. With House, he has mentioned that he heard what House would sound like from the first moment he read the script, like music, and he spends all his time trying to bring that sound out on screen. As a musician, does he always hear the character first or has he found other ways, movements, etc. that anchor the character for him? I would have like to hear why he found stagework so hard. How he kept going in the business when parts were far from great or when the parts weren't coming? How does he feel about doing commercials? The Brits seem to approach all forms of ghe business as proper work unlike Americans who have a hierarchy: Movies are better than TV; Miniseries are better than episodic; episodic is better than soap operas; Soap operas are better than commercials, etc. There were lots of things I would have like to have heard, but what I heard mostly was Lipton's voice...I kept picturing Will Ferrell's imitation which was dead on. At least the H/W question gave Hugh a chance to comment on the character's penchant for manipulation of all who come into his sphere of influence.

What I thought was interesting about the ITAS interview---at least how it was edited and broadcast, anyway---was how much time was wasted on things not really pertinent to Hugh's acting career. Now, granted, I'm not the most devoted watcher of the program but I've seen my fair share and I'm not sure I can recall too many other occasions where they run down the cast of characters for the subjects current project and asks their opinion of them. I mean, it's nice that Hugh has good things to say about his co-workers, but it seemed kind of like one of those stall questions that you revert to when you can't think of anything else to delve into. Which, in the case of HL, is pattently absurd.

Personally, I found the whole ITAS episode frustrating because Lipton seemed more interested in hearing himself speak. There was precious little about the craft of acting. I know what you're saying but the interview itself was supposed to be about his life and his acting experiences...I meant that the q&a which was supposed to be between Hugh and acting students was intended to be about the craft. I don't think I was clear about that in my first post...sorry houserocket7. I would have loved to hear HL's views on how he finds his character in the various things he's done. With House, he has mentioned that he heard what House would sound like from the first moment he read the script, like music, and he spends all his time tirying to bring that sound out on screen. As a musician, does he always hear the character first or has he found other ways, movements, etc. that anchor the character for him? I would have like to hear why he found stagework so hard. How he kept going when parts were far from great? ... Oh I'm totally with you on that. Especially the first thing you said there about how he reads the scripts like music. I think that's so cool and would love to hear more about it. And who knows...maybe he did and they cut it? At least the H/W question gave him a chance to comment on the character's penchant for manipulation of all who come into his sphere of influence. It didn't really do that though...did it? I mean not in the response that Hugh gave which was basically that he didn't want to commit to any ship as a possibility so he said they were all possibilities. From what I could tell from Hugh's response...he looked at that as having more to do with the show's shelf life than with House as a manipulator that gets what he wants from everyone around him. But if you saw it differently you saw it differently...I just thought the q&a should have been filled with more of the kinds of questions you asked above than the kinds of questions the audience asked...you know what I mean?

the craft Hee!

sautomne- 09-24-2007

the craft Hee! Double Hee! I'm so glad that HL has never referred to acting as his 'craft'. Sharon Stone does that. Madonna probably does too. It's such fakery.

sautomne- 09-24-2007

Am I right? No one should ever take acting too seriously. When I was in art school, everyone once in a while I'd run into someone who referred to themselves as a 'professional artist'. That always made me cringe.

galaxygirl- 09-24-2007

The words Sharon Stone and the craft should never been mentioned in the same sentence. She's a pretty shitty actress imo, who only got famous because she spreaded her legs in Basic Instinct.
